    First, take note of the temperature and amount of humidity. If the temperature is around freezing, there is a higher chance there will be ice on the roads. Stay out of the clusters of cars, especially on the highway. If you're touching your brakes all the time, you're too close to the vehicles in front and are at greater risk of crashing. If you do have to stop on ice and you slide when you touch the brakes, apply the brakes, release, steer and apply again. If you're not finding traction, get out the travelled portion of the road by moving to the right.

    I believe the curve info is definitely one of the most important tips especially braking when your car can lose complete traction from already changing wheel direction in a curve with ice. The other day in New Jersey/ New York states there were so many hundreds of accidents for black ice with most on curves from exits and entrances to the highways. I'm sure it must of been more so from the first crash blocking everyone else's way out so it caused a chain reaction since people couldn't brake cause of ice but still did to try and stop before the crashed car and ended up probably braking hard which made it even worse. Man that day I was fine until I exited the highway especially cause that exit has like two bad potholes at the top so my car did spin a bit at the curve but barely thankfully I didn't yank my steering wheel and just slightly turned to go straight again and didn't brake or panic!

      Thank you my friend. Glad to hear that you're okay. It's always good when you don't panic and don't hit the brakes. Just focus on steering the vehicle is almost always best. All the very best, Cheers Rick

    Move over to the right??? Shit if I do that here the little bit of snow built up on the right pulls me straight towards the ditch.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, if you're driving that close to the snow bank, you don't want to move over to the right my friend. But you do want to move slightly left or right (preferably to the outside) to get out of the main tracks of where the other vehicles are driving. Anywhere you can find a bit of traction. Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick

    It’s actually better if the temp is down below 10 degrees F. You get more “grip” on the ice without a thin layer of water you get around freezing. Same with compacted snow. Try not to coast, keep your drive tires turning for traction. When you coast you lose bite. If you’re rear wheel drive, turn on 4 wheel if you got it otherwise it’s almost impossible on ice without studded traction tires or chains.

    Great info, but I would really appreciate if you could do a lengthy video just covering winter driving. I’ve been watching all of your videos on winter driving, but I still have some issues with my vehicle that I’m not sure how to resolve. The main problem I usually have is in tight city traffic and when I try to slightly brake, but my vehicle sort of skids speeding up and I don’t ever have enough room to wait it out until it stops. It’s below 35 where I live, and I drive around 10-20 km/h on a normal road with a speed limit of 60 km/h, or slower depending on other cars speed. The only ways I usually avoid skidding into a car is by steering entirely off the road, since I can never find traction on the actual road for me to stop quickly.

      That sounds like a tire issue maybe not enough tread or performance tires that work wonders in summer but are useless in the snow

      Unless you're running studded tires, even winter tires won't do you much good on ice my friend. See this vid: th-cam.com/video/clvShdh26HU/w-d-xo.html Drop us a note if we can help further. Cheers Rick

    " Black ice " it's smoothed, compacted, polished ice from snow if its on an asphalt street or highway.
    Also water from tailpipe at a stop sign.

    Dont "hit" the brakes. TAP them... Move slow and steady with lots of space... Just remember this "slow is smooth and smooth is fast..."

    you have to drive close to the vehicle in front of you, otherwise idiots are constantly cutting in.
    you have to block them
