  • Shell Island shelling just sounds awesome right? Well it is, and it was especially awesome being out there and having the island almost to myself. I'm glad we got to see the Cape Romano dome homes one last time before they finally sunk to the bottom of the gulf.

    Was sad to read that the dome homes had been lost to Hurricane Ian but hopefully the sea life will adapt them and maybe the corals will also make them their home too. I watched a “drive through” of Sanibel today too, boy those construction folk really do need a huge well done for getting the causeway back in use in such a short time. Sanibel itself is absolutely heartbreaking, all the trees are so battered, there is hardly a space on the kerbside for all the refuse, peoples lives ending up at the side of the road. 😢 Captain Carlos definitely one of the good guys. Lovely that you are continuing to support him. Nice video too, so much to see on the island. Stay safe x

      I want to go over to Sanibel but I don't want to be in the way. Its hard to believe the hurricane hit over a month ago. The new normal is quite strange. Signs bent at 90 degree angles or completely missing from buildings. The blue tarps everywhere. It's going to be a long time before things are cleaned up properly so it's going to take a whole lot of patience and grit. 💪🏻💪🏻

    Hi Sharmon,
    A few weeks ago there was an TV programme about the domed homes. Why they were build, and why they were abandoned after a few years. It was very interesting. So sorry to hear that they are totally destroyed now. Mother Nature always claims back what was hers in the first place.
    The shells you found are gorgeous! Captain Carlos sounds like and incredible human being. Glad that you could rescue the bird.
    I'm so happy that you are supporting local shell tours, especially after the hurricane. They need all the help they can get.
    Hope you are doing well.
    Wishing you an amazing week! Big hug and lots of love, xoxo ❤️, Ilona

      Hi Ilona! I hope you are feeling good and you health is well. Yes, lots of things have changed due to that nasty hurricane. I know all we can see now is negative but I do hope there are some silver linings somewhere that we'll be able to see. The Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel areas are going to need a lot of help. I can't wait to get out there and help clean up these beaches!

    Another great place for banded tulips all sizes is the southernmost end of St Pete Beach. I've been down there a few times recently and found them each time. Is there ANY sand on that beach/island? Or is it ALL shells??! That's amazing! Oh wait! I think might have seen a little sand during "beach time"!😂 Sadly, tours in the summer months are usually always going to deal with weather in the afternoons. That was a huge angel wing! Great job on the cleanups! Thanks, Sharmon! xxoo

      I checked out a photo of the island post Ian and it looks like a little spit of sand and that's it. The island has changed once again. Ooh, those tiny apple murex would be lovely on a frame. I need 6to8 of those. Plus I love the small Florida cones. That apple murex be for baby horse conch is my favorite color. I loved visiting the beach this week and you got some gorgeous shells! The bird rescue was great too. I am wondering how bad the water quality still is in SWFL. I've only been to this island twice and it was so different each time. I guess that's one of the things I really enjoy about beachcombing - the beaches are always changing. I would have kept that Large Florida Horse Conch with the spire chopped off. You know, if you cut the tops off most univalve shells, you can blow them like a trumpet. Even though that particular horse conch was on a smaller side, it would still be blowable. Plus you wouldn’t need to saw off the spire. It was already done by nature. I have a few conch shells (Queen/Pink conch) that I cut myself and taught myself how to blow them! The Sound is a deep pitch that can be heard for miles like they say. Whenever I blow it, people are left confused. Maybe thinking the sound came from the sky!!! I’m still practicing but I enjoy it.

    • @SWFBeachLife

    Why is it that no one finds the Wedding Cake Venus Clam in Florida? I had to buy them for my collection 1 inch big. I do like your videos. Thank you. Trudy in PA

      The wedding cake venus clam is not native to Florida, which is why we don't find them here 😉 Thanks so much for watching my videos!

    I’m finding this so difficult to watch. I’m from here. All I can think about is all of the garages full of toxic chemicals that are washed into my homes beautiful waters now. My Grandmother would have me heal my scratches in the waters infront of what used to be “ The Jolly Rodger Motel” that they lived in an managed on Sanibel. I remember my Grandpa mapping out Hurricanes on grid paper.
    My Grandmother taught me all of the names of the shells and what you think is a plethora is nothing compared to what we found everyday. I have been heartbroken for my Florida since the 90’s. By then I could see the future of the failing sewage lines and how there would be no way to properly handle the excrement of the droves of humans that were not only planting their “Kentucky Blue” or look alike yards and with zero regard or desire to learn about what they are destroying by doing that… the biomes… microorganisms that are unique to Florida that take decades to grow and produce the oxygen rich and necessary to sustain life here, plant life that anyone from up North had zero clue about and zero regard for. The disgusting round up spilled to keep their “yards” green would penetrate and burn my sinuses.
    Now that the internet has exposed every wonder part of Florida, developers have ripped out our ancient oaks our swamplands drained our panthers scamper away and have no home within a DAY! I witnessed one running slinked in fear after it’s entire Forrest was flattened and gone in one day. One day.
    Everyone needs to be made to leave Florida and the entire state designated as a state park. It’s unique to the world and the very paradise that people move here for is being destroyed by those very same people and they don’t even know it. You should have to pass a test on the environment and how to care for it before you move here.
    I haven’t been able to heal my scratches in the Gulf waters for decades now… now you don’t ( or shouldn’t) get in the water with even a scratch. MRSA runs rampant and there’s always a sewage spill every year, usually as the rainy season hits and the snowbird-tourists all trickle away. I’m sickened and so very heartbroken. Now we have airborne Cyanobacteria that is proving to be causing dementia in our elderly.
    I have enjoyed your videos but I’m just not as happy as you are since Hurricane Ian. We haven’t seen the worst of it’s damage yet.

    Great video as always and so enjoyable. Just curious where about is shell island? My google shows a shell island north of Marco-was wondering if it was the same one you went to.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Shell Island I visited is just south of Marco Island near the Everglades in Southwest Florida. I know there is another Shell Island north of here, but the one I was at is near where the Cape Romano Dome Homes used to be.

    Be careful with the bleach on the shells, too much bleach gives the shells a faded, & a bleach residue left on them.

    When’s the best time of year to collect shells ?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically winter is the best due to NW winds pushing shells up onto the beach.

      I have an external microphone and I record my VOs through Final Cut Pro. I lower the ambient sound in the videos and then record the voice over after I've edited the video the way I want. I always wanted to be a VO artist!
