      Always thought it was nuts not to install a small minimum warp 3 wap drive somehow into the saucer section. If your in the middle of nowhere and communications go out and the star drive got destroyed about 2 or 3 light years away as it flew back to fight an enemy. You might as well become a generational saucer section as it takes you maybe 50 to 100 years to fky to the next communications relay or class M Planet.

    Interesting fact. The Sovereign-Class was designed with Saucer Separation in mind. We never got to see it sadly.

      @UPRailRoad-xg8cb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, I've never been a fan of that class of ship having seperation abilities. I think that part of it is that it feels not necessary. The main issue, however, is what I would consider a design flaw. The drive section doesn't have impulse engines. If that ship class seperates, the drive section would be stuck with manuvering thrusters or would only be able to go to warp. Not the best idea in my opinion.

    • @simonpreston
      @simonpreston 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even the 'original' TOS Enterprise had saucer separation. Whilst it was never seen, on screen, Kirk mentions it in the episode 'The Apple':
      "Tie every ounce of power the ship has into the impulse engines. Discard the warp drive nacelles if you have to, and crack out of there with the main section, but get that ship out of there!"
      Although it'd be a permanent thing; not able to reattach, once done. So it seems plausible that saucer separation is a feature built in to most starships; particularly ones with the standard saucer + engineering hull sections. May be a bit pointless for ships such as the Miranda class. But they, too, may still be able to jettison the nacelles, if required.

    It looks cool and everything, but from an engineering standpoint it would be really challenging (and expensive) to design such a ship, with separate power systems, two main computers, separate propulsion etc. Also there would be two "decks" that aren't useable since you basically have to travel through the hull to get to the other section.

    • @alexgataric
      @alexgataric ปีที่แล้ว

      But also very useful as we've seen the two halves operate effectively in combat and as a life raft. They effectively created two ships and combined them. It makes sense to leave the civilians on the saucer and take the star drive section into combat or high risk situations.

Enterprise NCC-1701-D and as Riker said 'She went before her time' and sadly that was true as the life expectancy of the Galaxy Class was 100 years and the Enterprise D was in service for only 8 years who followed the destruction of her sister ship the U.S.S. Of the thirteen phaser banks, it only ever fired from six of them: mostly from the two on the saucer, once from the stardrive head, once from the stardrive ventral phaser, and finally a blink-and-you’ll-miss it shot from the nacelle struts. The saucer section doesn't have a warp drive and no longer being in the warp field means they couldn't maintain warp even if they had remaining enertia. Did they mention anything about this in the episode? It feels like the writers might not have thought this through, but given its the first episode, I guess the future episodes were the ones that didn't look back.

      @@theepicnatalie1219 well aware of how physics works, I have a degree in it.
      The concept behind warp drive is that the ship itself isn’t actually moving faster than the speed of light relative to the space around it. Instead, the warp drive “warps” the space time continuum around the ship, moving space around the ship. Space in front of the ship contracts, and space behind it expands. It’s sort of like being on a quantum mechanical treadmill. The warp drive creates a bubble around the ship. Anything inside the bubble is along for the ride so to speak. Anything outside the bubble isn’t. So if the saucer separates and breaches that bubble, the space around the saucer wouldn’t be moving anymore, so the ship would then drop to sub light speed while the drive section would continue on. Or rather, the bubble would continue on with the drive section inside it.

The star drive still explodes, but Data and Troi achieve standard orbit around the planet. Starfleet still has to come rescue them and because of damage the saucer took it’s decommissioned and put in a museum. The crew is then assigned to a Sovereign class ship named the E-E so that the flagship remains a top of the line ship (by happy coincidence). During a future feature film, the E-E could fly by the E-D saucer to please some fans.
    I think fans would be happier with this outcome and the executives still get their new ship.

    Saucer Sep... the name of Starfleet Academy's official mascot, he would just show up at the Parrises Squares tournament and drop a giant stuffed saucer section right onto the grid, then "pilot" himself away using the cardboard warp engines on his back. No one liked him

    It's always the same shot that ILM recorded at the beginning of the first season as stock footage. It is also a shame that there was no seperation in the later seasons. The whole concept wasnt well thought out. You can see that e.g. At Voyager much better, where it is that it can seperate in three parts and then attack with all three parts at the same time, that makes more sense, i.e. the separation with the Enterprise D. It is also a shame that the bridge was no longer used in the later seasons. This is mainly due to the fact that the battle bridge was later always redesigned and became the Alien Ship of the Week or the Alien Bridge of the week.
    you remember in which room Captain Picard landed as Borg on the Enterprise? This is the same room where Data created his daughter. And that was the battle bridge. It was simply redesigned and it was done so well that no one did even realize that it was the battle Bridge, but that it looked as if it was a completely new room.

      Tbh the Enterprise is an older vessel. Voyager is meant to be an improvement.

      Voyager never had separation. You're thinking of the Prometheus, which was shown in an episode of Voyager.

      It was planned to be a regular thing but the powers that be felt it slowed stories down to a crawl, If I were in the writers room I'd have episodes where the Saucer had separated before the episode even started, the idea being that The Enterprise was required to do so to either cover more ground during an exploration mission or have the civilians and Non-Essential Personnel sent to a starbase aboard the Saucer when the Enterprise has been ordered into a potentially dangerous situation.

      @@DelcoRanz93 The main reason is that there were 3 filming models of the 1701-D, a two foot model (Used in Seasons 1 and 2), a 4 foot model (Used for the remainder of the series) and a 6 foot model and only the 6 foot model had the detachable saucer and was by all accounts, a royal pain to use and very costly to operate, which is why saucer separation did not happen every other week. Now in the days of CGI everything, you'd probably get that.
