It’s almost like she’s ageing backwards in this second album. Starting in a bar, grown up. In the middle there’s highschool, a school bully. And we end up with Peter and Robin, children stories.
Don’t know if it’s on purpose but I found it interesting

And it ends with The Manuscript, which contains the lyrics "Lookin' backwards

I think “the manuscript” is doing something really interesting in the Taylor Swift meta. This is pure speculation, but I have a theory that she’s telling a story about a story.
She’s basically letting us in on the journey that led to the creation of “all too well”, and how she healed through the process of writing and directing the film of what is broadly considered her magnum opus.
I think it’s lovely how the final act of letting go is as simple as recognizing that this once very personal and devastating moment in her life, now belongs to the world.

AVAA. The physical cd/vinyl has a wonderful summary poem titled “In Summation”
    At this hearing
I stand before my fellow members
    of the Tortured Poets Department
With a summary of my findings
    A debrief, a detailed rewinding
    For the purpose of warning
    For the sake of reminding
As you might all unfortunately recall I had been struck with a case of a restricted humanity
Which explains my plea here today of temporary insanity
    You see, the pendulum swings
    Oh, the chaos it brings
Leads the caged beast to do
    the most curious things
Lovers spend years denying what’s ill fated
    Resentment rotting away
    galaxies we created
    Stars placed and glued
    meticulously by hand
    next to the ceiling fan
    Tried wishing on comets.
    Tried dimming the shine.
    Tried to orbit his planet.
    Some stars never align.
And in one conversation, I tore down the whole sky
Spring sprung forth with dazzling freedom hues
Then a crash from the skylight
    Bursting through
Something old, someone hallowed, who told me he could be brand new
And so I was out of the oven
    And into the microwave
Out of the slammer and into a tidal wave
How gallant to save the empress
    from her gilded tower
Swinging a sword he could barely lift
But loneliness struck at that fateful hour
Low hanging fruit on his wine stained lips
He never even scratched the surface of me.
    None of them did.
“In summation, it was not a love affair!” I screamed while bringing my fists to my coffee ringed desk
It was a mutual manic phase.
    It was self harm.
It was house and then cardiac arrest.
A smirk creeps onto this poet’s face
Because it’s the worst men that I write best.
And so I enter into evidence My tarnished coat of arms
    My muses, acquired like bruises
    My talismans and charms
The tick, tick, tick of love bombs
My veins of pitch black ink
All’s fair in love and poetry
    Sincerely,
    The Chairman
    of The Tortured Poets Department

The irony that folklore/evermore are considered her most impressive, critically acclaimed albums she’s ever made… while those same critics now malign TTPD when The Anthology half is essentially just what didn’t make it on those two. But Dessner said they began recording these in 2020. And maybe you could argue it’s not good because there’s a reason they were left off folklore/evermore, but I haven’t seen that specific critique. They’ve just been panning it outright when it’s almost quite literally just volume 3 of the Dessner trilogy which those very people are complaining that TTPD isn’t more like folklore/evermore haha

I have been trying to reckon with the tension in this album and the gulf that seems to exist between Swifties and public reception ("instant classic" vs. "instant flop") of these new albums. This gulf seemed so odd to me when listening to what felt to me to be a messy album with good elements throughout it on first listen. Your videos have really helped me to contextualize the album in an interesting way (the "anti-romantic" framework is really illuminating) and better understand the gulf. It seems like people who love this album intuitively love it for the Swiftie-ness of it and therefore pick up on the irony, while people who hate it take it at face value. Neither side is consciously thinking about it as "anti-romantic", but the Swifties have at least subconsciously picked up on that framework because of how in sync that community has been with Taylor's story-telling over time. I still feel that the critiques that Swift could have used a better editor on these songs holds water, but I'm also willing to accept that Taylor just wanted to get this out there and move on instead of spending even one more moment sitting by the river and painstakingly sifting through the muck for gold.

Chloe Sam Sofia or Marcus is completely beautiful and i think people are missing that its both heartbreak and nostalgia and regret. I personally think it's about watching a former love through the years descend into addiction, wondering if things would've gone differently had you been there to help them out been old enough to know what to do.

AVAA I watched every minute of your video and really enjoyed it! This is probably the only serious analysis I've seen of this album. To be honest, most people saying that the album is bad and she is not a good lyricist, are the ones who already disliked her before. So they listen to it already having prejudices and refusing to see the depth of the lyrics, because they can't accept liking Swift's work. So this video was really refreshing, you are a great storyteller!

I'm wondering if the second album is not (yet) on vinyl because it was the only way she could be sure it wasn't leaked and, thus, could be a true surprise. I don't think you can produce millions of physical copies of something without 100s of people being in a position to potentially leak it. But if Part 2 was literally just on her hard drive, it would almost certainly not leak. She wanted her fans to be truly surprised and for the songs to hit everyone - including music critics - at the same time. And it worked. There were leaks of the first album, but not the second one, and it really did have some shock value. Hopefully, now, the second album is in physical production and will be on shelves in a few weeks. (?)

AVAA! FYI Bon Iver is pronounced like “Bon Hiver” in French not “Bawn Eye-ver.” According to Justin Vernon (Bon Iver’s real name), he came up with the name after watching the show Northern Exposure where some of the characters would use this greeting with one another and he liked the sound of it. But since he didn’t know French, he didn’t know how hiver starts with an h and didn’t care to change it after finding out the correct spelling.

Oh wow! Since listening to the anthology I’ve been thinking the very same thing…that this was a period. An ending of sorts. Not a retirement but a “putting away” of the Taylor we’ve known at least since Reputation. I also get the feeling that she wrote some of these songs in the years since writing Reputation & releasing them with this project was a way to put a stamp on this period of her life. Maybe even a cathartic release for her as well. Perhaps I’m overthinking it, but you are the 1st I’ve heard mention the “end of an era” theory that I believe is likely. I finally feel somewhat vindicated because I’ve mentioned it to others & no one else seems to get that sense at all. I guess time will tell.

    AVAA!
In my opinion, the most disappointing narratives surrounding this anthology, are people metabolizing it as “overworked”, “uninspired”, or “beginning to sound too much like Lana Del Rey.”
I'm in my mid-30s, and have been listening to both Lana and Taylor since their respective debuts, and in my opinion, there really isn't any correlation between their (most recent) musical styles, save for the fact that they're both moving in a more "acoustic"/"organic" direction (Taylor more slowly than Lana, due to her [purposefully] commercial factor)-which, as someone who is Taylor's age, and thus, fairly close to Lana's age-I think the ability to lay back and enjoy subtlety and introspection in [your] artwork, actually just comes with age.
Despite my age, I listen to ‘Gen 4’ and ‘Gen 5’ South Korean Pop groups every morning. Being a Westerner, live K-Pop performances are released overnight for me, and I enjoy them with my morning coffee. The music is generally upbeat, chaotic, and audibly complex, because it exists [forgive me for being potentially offensive here] purely to generate income from streams/views, preying upon young(er) listeners who may regularly dismiss anything less "attention catching" to be "boring".
I remember (all too well) growing up with Dubstep and EDM-Pop in the early 2010s feeling the same way; that music could never be greater than neon, thumping, youthful effervescence. Today, K-Pop exists upon that spectrum, easily dismissed as the audible equivalent of a child's sensory toy-but even so-I remember what it felt like to “need” that stimulation and its complementary eye-candy.
But as I crept into my late 20s-having gained life experiences, as do we all-I listened to softer, subtler, gentler music with newfound wonder. Music that I would have ordinarily written off as “bland” ten years ago, now presented a chance for me to empathize with deeper, more romantic, esoteric passages from musicians I'd always loved; especially those who pour their lives (and personal legends) into their lyrics.
I think what people are missing about Taylor's modern work-this double-album being the most recent-is that she is no longer limited to the capacity of albums like ‘Red’ or ‘1989’. She is a decade older, with a wealth of experience, introspection, and healing.
‘The Tortured Poets Department’ shows us that she still has the ability to produce the more youthful sounds from her ‘Fearless’ and ‘Speak Now’ albums, via songs like ‘thanK you aIMee’ or 'But Daddy I Love Him'; but is also equipped with the ability to produce the wizened sounds of ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’, which contain some of her strongest and most imaginative lyrical works.
'The Tortured Poets Department' is a large, overwhelming body of work, yes. Though what people are (potentially) missing, is that the majority of it was written during her ‘Eras Tour’. And that's exactly what it sounds like: a compendium of every sound, from every album she has ever released-just a few songs to represent each former body of work-and you're either going to understand (and appreciate) the presentation, or you're going to miss (and loathe) the point.
The album is a tapestry, containing the proverbial lore of the artist herself: woven from fibers of ‘1989’s triumphant Arena-Pop, stained with the humming electronic distortion found on ‘Midnights’ (which hearkened back to ‘Reputation’ on several tracks), embroidered with the sparkling, cheeky threads of Country-Pop that catapulted Taylor to stardom, all to be pridefully displayed above the mantle of her maritime forest Bardcore cabin à la ‘FolkMore’.
And this is why you theorized she may be "done with it".
Her career thus far has been outlined by both the ‘Eras Tour’ and by this album.
There is nothing left to do, except to reflect.
In closing: my opinion is that she knows ‘FolkMore’ is where she belongs artistically, but to keep her legacy alive in the hearts of younger generations (and more casual listeners), she has to give the people something "fun" enough to haunt the charts, and this is where we've found her for the past two albums-trapped between "artistry" and "commercial appeal".
I look forward to appreciating her navigation through this inevitable transition period in her career. It's certainly been a joy to witness thus far, and I believe in her ability to do it with integrity, while effortlessly glamouring our collective interests.

    • @suiteblaq
      @suiteblaq หลายเดือนก่อน +3

After thinking on this album and those receiving it negatively with a bit more depth, I actually wanted to add a few more of my opinions, as well as some additional nuggets of knowledge:
Another set of the critiques I’ve noticed concerning the lyricism on this album-much like Professor Skye mentioned-is that the lyrics are “cringe-y” and “immature”, or that people feel as though Taylor is “too old to be writing these kinds of things in her 30s.”
I’d actually love to address this, because I want to impart some potentially healing (or protecting) knowledge to anyone who might be reading this second message; but especially to the eldest among Generation Z, many of whom I’ve noticed are struggling with their journeys into adulthood, ostensibly fearing the same expectations of a perfected maturity they once placed upon their elders, will now be placed upon them.
In several branches of Neopaganism-a religion whose adherents reference pre-Christian, folkloric, and ethnographic beliefs-there exists a Triple Goddess, not unlike the Tridevi found in Hinduism. This goddess, represented by phases of the moon, is explicitly tied to the Divine Feminine within each culture that she appears.
As her name suggests, this goddess is comprised of three distinct parts-The Maiden, The Mother, and The Crone-each representing a different ‘phase’ attached to a woman’s life. Much like the Triple Goddess, each of us-men, women, and all the beautiful people in-between-exist on an ever-changing spectrum, beginning as one set role, but ‘cycling’ between them as needed. Within every child, there exists a wisdom beyond their years, and within each elder, exists an inner child.
To anyone who has ever “outgrown” their favorite media, preferred colors, or personal styles; isn’t it curious how you find yourself returning to these youthful inclinations?
As a ‘Mother’ or as a ‘Crone’, you will always find yourself remaining in-touch-no matter how (potentially) infrequent-with your inner ‘Maiden’. The heart always returns to its first loves; sometimes finding it has indeed outgrown them, and sometimes reigniting those flames of predilection.
There is no such thing as being “too old” to look back on past lovers and feel slighted by recollected injustices, or warmed by the fires of bygone passions.
There is no such thing as being “too old” to return to the novels, films or records of your formative years, obtaining new knowledge upon each inspection.
There is no such thing as being “too old” to revisit prior mindsets and practices, imbuing each fragment with modern experience.
As we age, we collect cherished memories, personas, encounters and talents; each of these existing as instruments in our personal orchestras, and each at our disposal to play, regardless of time.
In reassessing and rekindling the proverbial flames (and trauma) of former relationships and the eras they inspired, Taylor is merely demonstrating (and utilizing) the power of said instruments-ever in-touch with that fragile fifteen year old who was told they were loved, and believed it-but wizened enough to wield these sentiments with newfound humor and wit.
Madonna recently summarized it best in a promotional message: “I have no age, I am all ages. It’s not about who I am, it’s about how many I am; count my achievements, not the number of years I have lived on this planet.”
Spoken like a true ‘Crone’, looking back at the beautiful lives she has lived, and personas she has curated-some to protect herself, and others to entertain us-still very much in communion with the brazen young hopeful who released ‘Everybody’ to modest success, but never faltered until she was regarded as a Queen.
Never feel guilty for looking back on the people you “used to be” with love and reverence, nor using the gifts your individual journeys have bestowed upon you to create something beautiful; even if that beauty is rooted in a former ‘phase’.
We’re hearing Taylor do this now, blissfully unbound.

This song is a response to everyone telling her to be the good girl-from some fans signing a petition against her dating Matty Healy, to the conservative country music scene, to right wing nuts like Candace Owens saying she’s too single or whatever, to the managers & PR people. It’s got anthemic breaking-free energy. I would categorize it with Mad Woman and Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me (though that’s about celebrity too).

I think the Kim thing is a red herring, it’s too obvious to be the only intention. The song for Taylor, may have been about childhood and adult bullies in her life. For the listener, it offers a chance to think back differently about bullies in their own lives, and how to look for the positive outcomes those negative experiences every life contains.

This is absolutely accurate. I think she’s done. I am so happy that someone talks about the anti romanticism of her songs because many friends have felt stifled by her songs being disguised Hollywood propaganda and toxic narratives hidden in a wool cardigan. And it’s true. BUT the reason I relate to it is because she’s trying to get rid of it. I relate strongly to her trying to unlearn all those narratives, it’s not a coincidence that she went from novels to more poetry reference from modern American poetry.
I see a lot of parallels between her and Frank O’Hara personally.
We are absolutely spoiled to be thinking that about Antonoff !
Thank you for the Gainsbourg reference, even though he sucks in life … he was ridiculously talented.
I wonder also if her “liberation” and happiness from societal’s expectation will sort of require her to stop being a public artist. It would be tragic for us and I would hate it, and partly conceding defeat to mysoginists … but it kept going around my mind whilst listening to the album.

On an album that is very mature and requires some literary knowledge or life experience to truly understand, i will say that both "daddy i love him" and "thank you aimee" are the specifically included as anthems for younger fans. I for one love them, especially the production. I suspect this is more Taylor's production style than either Jack or Aaron. I think in these songs, Taylor uses both of them to get it to sound exactly the way she wants for the fans.

    • @zazatjhang3830
      @zazatjhang3830 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't agree with this opinion, no hate, my point is Taylor is now a mature woman because she is in her mid 30 but she has always been sort of playful and silly and (petty) 😂 and that's probably perceived as not so good quality of a mature adult but swiftie tolerates it or even encourages it so I don't necessarily think any of this song is catered to any young people really especially because there are so many profanity which is not her brand in the previous decade, especially in DILH, she definitely being pissed to her fans and calls them out 😅 because they intervene too much on her personal life which should be only her business not theirs and even with thanK you aIMee, 😂 she's being very sarcastic about it and (petty) and probably the hurt that person gives her hasn't quite healed yet hence she talks about it again 😂 why everyone expects her to be a cool adult and move on with her life, she just an ordinary human just as other people, not everyone can forgive people that easily anyway 😅

    • @hkandm4s23
      @hkandm4s23 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@zazatjhang3830 I agree with most of that, but I think it's both. The words are personal and her own and she means them, but i do think when she has an intensely cathartic song, she envisions it as an anthem she wants people to sing at her shows, and knows what she wants them to sound like. Perhaps i misspoke about it being specifically toward younger fans... it's for everyone. Especially with both of those, fans overstepping as well as rerecording reputation I'm sure those events were extremely salient during the time the actual words were being written. But I sincerely think these songs were both intended to be anthems for anyone who needs them and Taylor likely had more input on the production for that reason. That's why it sounds so much more like her older work. Just my suspicion anyway of why they are dual produced. I don't think it's juvenile or calculated - I think it's her approach when she had something she thinks could be a fan favorite if the production is executed correctly.

My mind has just been blown with the Title being Anti Romantic and the soundtrack destroying nostalgia. Would that mean then that this album is like a coming down to earth from Folklore and Evermore because of it's more realistic lyrics, symbolizing the end of that era in her life and both album artworks are grayscale tying them together somehow?? 🤯...or maybe I'm just in too deep now and hallucinating XD.

AVAA. I agree with you on most of the so-called "bad lyrics" but the Grand Theft Auto one is bad to me just because it sounds too bizarre. it's mostly the awkward (imo) use of the word 'bros' and the name dropping of grand theft auto. the image it gives me is jarring and doesn't help the overall feeling and clashes with the rest of the lyrics and the nostalgia aspect. Still one of my favorite songs, it's a pretty minor complaint. All the great lyricists occasionally have strange or bad lyrics. I think it is pretty wild that so many people are quick to take a few of the lyrics out of any context and proclaim the lyrics are overall terrible.
really liked your analysis, at first I was less interested in this album because I don't care about her personal life/relationships much but I think it's really well done thematically and doesn't at all require following any of her gossip. There are many different facets to this album which make me a bit annoyed that so much of the fan discussion seems to be about which song is about Joe or Matty or whatever. I have a feeling the bleak mood will really be what sets this one apart from the rest of her discography, I'd be surprised (and a little concerned) if material is ever this despondent again.

5:09 the reason her first album is cohesive and available to purchase an album is because that is for Grammy consideration. If she put all of this on the standard albums they wouldn’t win Grammys because they wouldn’t be cohesive. Taylor leaves much of the process of “getting to the album” off her standard albums.
Before she owned her own music she was forced to leave these songs in vaults. She has said now that she owns her own masters and can make these choices for herself she chooses to release them as bonus tracks because they do tell a more robust story, just less cohesively than what is capable of winning Grammys, and that’s why they’re separate. NOT because she’s dumping content for a profit pipeline; although I’m not denying she’s also an excellent marketeer.
I know you’re new to Taylor, and I am new to your channel. I’m already loving the depth your putting into your review and I appreciate it a great deal. Thank you.
What I have to say next is largely my own speculation, so please take it with a grain of salt. After following Taylor’s career for a long time, I highly suspect TTPD + anthology was written for broadway, and will eventually tour in an American Idiot style performance. The spoken word poetry is just screaming broadway to my mind.
On top of that, we know with official certainty that she is directing a feature length film, but every other detail is shrouded in secrecy. I suspect TTPD + Anthology will be a large part of the soundtrack for that film once it comes out.
And finally, at the end of Taylor’s short film we see adult Taylor cast as the adult character Sadie Sink plays in the short, and in that scene she’s reading from a book, detailing the experience the song and short reveal.
Listen to all 31 songs again, with a film score, book, and broadway in mind. I’d love to know your take on what I’ve speculated.
If you listen to the manuscript with this in mind it’s haunting foreshadowing… to me.

Although I prefer the actual album to the appendage these tracks did help vault this album over "folklore" for the best Taylor album in my opinion. I do think the "So High School" as a title is a clevel play on the popular critique she's gotten for "being 30" and "dating the boy on the football team" and Kim K seems to be getting it from both sides with "thanK you aIMee" and the end of Ye's verse on "Carnvial" where he holds himself back from saying something about her have his "kids in a fake school."
One of the best examples of the bittersweetness of nostalgia comes from the shortlived FOX comedy "Making History" where the protagonist (who has a time machine) has a crush on Paul Revere's daughter and wants to live in the past with her but brings her to the present and one of her first comments is "Where are the child graves?" On Bleachers' second record, Jack Antonoff also has a song "Miss Those Days" where a line in the hook is "Hey, I know I was lost but I miss those days" which is that kind of simultaneous acknowledgement of the past only seeming to be easier in hindsight than the present but can never be while you are experiencing it because you only have the past before that as a reference point lol

Is Taylor having a Kid A moment? Maybe? Cause I remember the backlash on that album, when it was first released.
100 percent agree with your Post Malone comment. Wut?! We had Beastie Boys to this? Okay, I guess.
First, I want to say. Sry for a long message
I'm putting this disclaimer note on here: This is information I have heard on different sites and people discussing her relationship with that 1970s band guy. Matt Whatever.
He stated in an interview enjoyment watching black women being brutally a****ed in p***n. Specifially GG.
Imho, yeah....she was still dating that. When he said that. They talked to her about that, and she ignored it.
So Taylor kinda needed to NOT date that and rechange the narrative on what she's dating and who she's dating. Cause, that's not a good look. She's still never spoken about it. From what I've seen. Matt guy "deleted" his posts about his comments on black women, mostly racist commentary, and other creepy things to "clean" up his image, and I believe it was before I think she was launching an album. Sooooo that could have been a factor. So when I heard about that.....this is why I don't trust her at all. If that's Nostalgia on an ex....yikes. Cause she was ok on dating that? I know to separate. Did that with David Bowie and the young fan. 😮‍💨
Taylor was always the one female artist. I just always tried to take a chance to hear one of her songs. Still haven't. I even tried with Lana Del Rey. Never could, and I know why for me. It still sounds plastic, not genuine at all. And a method not a heart. Gimmick.
I read someone compared Kendrick last album, Mr. Morales to Taylor's work. Yeah.....nope. But I'm biased because he had Beth Gibbons on his album. Portishead for the win.
Anyhow, it's strange, I can relate to PJ Harvey, Tori, Big Thief, Amy W, Montgomery, Cardigans, Bikini Kill, Carol King, Grouper, and especially Cocteau Twins Elizabeth Fraizer
I mean, her and Jeff Buckley's song "All Flowers in Time" kills me every time, and many other female artists.
For some reason, Taylor always reminds me of "I Am woman here me Roar" Late 3rd wave white women feminism. However, I was 37 year old black woman when Taylor first dropped. So I couldn't see it. Now past 40, it's gonna be harder.
So this new album, since everyone hatin' imma, actually give it a try. Still couldn't tell you what her music sounds like, but thanks to your analysis - I'll take a chance on an unknown kid. Again, sorry for the long post.
I'd like to see an analysis or your thoughts on The Osees or TV Girl. And happy late Record Day! Bought a ton of Cornelius. 😊 Sorry for the rambling post.

    Hi Skye.
Watched it all through because I really respect you and your work. I must say though, I did not appreciate at all that impression you did of Lana. Not because I don't consider it as a joke, neither I think your jokes are bad, it's just that you've two hour long videos now defending Taylor's figure as a "magic woman", a great influential female figure, who has been comprehensively criticized for this musical product, however you are also capable in the same video to mock Lana's voice, who had and still has hate coming from men and sexist journalism about how her voice sounded awful on SNL early on her career. This, by the way, isn't the first time I've heard you do a joke at her voice's expense, given that in your Ocean Blvd review you said her voice sounded like Kermit the frog compared to Harry Nilsson's.
Although opinions, and you have the right to have them, I would appreciate the room to improve on your respectful views on female singers, specially those who have been repeatedly bullied by misogynists through their entire work span. At least I think it's the correct way to go there. Hope you have a great week, I'd love to know your opinion on this too.

Edit to say, as a writer of poetry myself, TTPD made me want to throw away my pens. Taylor really outdid herself, and everyone else. I notice her detractors never say, "Here's a poem / song I wrote, and it's better."
    Not a once.

I got a totally different undertone on Robin. Yes, it's for a child, but it's almost like it's an adult protecting the child from all of the emotional byproduct of being an adult (or trying to, at least.) Maybe envying their innocence and lack of awareness or self-consciousness. The "We don't want you to know that mommy and daddy might get divorced" song, or the "you don't need a cell phone/unrestricted internet access, stay innocent, please!!" song. Enjoy ruling the dinosaurs because when you grow up, they'll tear you apart. Or I could have just been too cynical while listening. 😅
