My coach used to say, “Training is earning fitness; racing is spending fitness.” Hit your workouts, don’t race them. Then rest.

I'm glad you guys discussed this. I'm on the lowest load fondo plan so I'm doing an hour long workout, an hour and a quarter workout, and an hour and a half long workout through the weekdays. But, i always do a 100km or so ride on the weekend with friends. I wasn't sure if it was expected that people would be doing extra rides outside the plan or not. I didn't want to choose the medium load plan and skip a workout every week, in case i miss out on some benefit but my weekend rides outside are what i train for.

It is important to hold your self back sometimes, to be able to be consistent. Important lesson!

I like Dr. Seiler's term of Intensity Discipline. It's a difficult thing to employ.

Great discussion! I have recently found myself in the opposite position with the cold weather having finally arrived. I typically schedule at least one and usually two group rides per
week into my training plan to meet my goals. Without those rides I find it much harder to spend those hours on the trainer. To be crystal clear it is much easier to be outside for 2-4 hrs and reach my TSS goal than grinding those hours out on the trainer.

If the group ride is a social cafe ride that involves a climb could you just opt to drop back and push less and meet back up at the cafe? If the hill is an up and down then back to the cafe only climb a smaller portion and turn around earlier? I personally know this is easier said than done

I’d like to add that we are influenced by what we see, constant racing on tv and the internet which is a blessing and a curse. We do not see the pros during their months of training or recovery rides. Training for professional athletes is probably very tedious and unglamorous but that’s why they have coaches that see the big picture of health and progress, or lack of. As amateur cyclists we love our fast easy days since that is what we only see on tv and get distracted by the adrenaline rush which is a huge withdrawal from our fitness/training bank account. Once again our mental strength and inner discipline comes into play. We didn’t ignore that discipline during our school years so therefore our training /recovery rides are no different and require the same mental and logical approach. We are basically homeschooling ourselves! Time for a tutor to reign us in!

Don't wait until next week. Do it today. Do something. 10 pushups. Go!

When you ask yourself "should I" or "shall I" the answer is always NO. (only took me 15 years to learn that :-) Just do the damn program.
