This book trilogy was pure magic and inspiration as a teen. Re-reading as an adult. Still holds up. Didn’t realize Yolen wrote a 4th book in this series. I will hunt it down. Thanks for posting.
This cartoon got me into the trilogy when I was in fourth grade. My mom took me to a book reading Jane Yolen did at a local Borders. I had a question for her about the book. She listened to me seriously and signed a really nice note for me in my book.
After 30 years this show still teaches me some things. This soundtrack has stayed with me after all this time, it's epic. Skill not slaughter, beware of Fool's Pride and keep your bag full, my friends
I worked on this cartoon at Hanna Barbara when they were in St Leonards Sydney. I had the task of animating the washing of the dragon scene with the broom mop. I was an Inbetweener. :D
Oh wow, that is so cool! You know, I don't know why, but the music stuck with me so much I hunted down the original composer and wrote to him, and he pulled out the music from his archives and sent me a raw copy!
Growing up in the 80's, I remember watching the CBS Storybreak. I don't remember this episode specifically but the irony is that 15 years later I'd pick up the exact same book from the local library and completely fall in love with the Dragon's Blood/Heart's blood series. This is just so cool to find out that your favorite book actually had a cartoon adaptation. This cartoon looks like it took some of its insperation for setting and music from the video game called Shadow of the Beast series. Mainly the amiga version and the second one.
My memories of this go back pretty far. I saw this cartoon when I was little and loved it, so my mom checked Janoe Yolen's whole Pit Dragon Trilogy and read them to me. Then later I read them to myself when I was a teenager. I love dragons and I love those books. So again, thank you. This brought back loads of nostalgia.
Same thing for me. I totally get why Jane Yolen herself doesn't like this, but... it still drove a lot of people to her books. And, I admit, I do have a fondness for it as a kid's story on it's own. It's nothing like the book, but then again, when you have to pack a whole back into 22 minutes, tone it for children, and still cover the major plot points.... well, it's good for what it was.
My memory isn't so good. However, it is a great assistance to me when people post these old programs. It's only then that I remember with fond memory. I'm like, "Oh, my god! I remember that!" Thank you so much.
Thanks for posting. I saw this once when I was a little kid, wished I could see it again, but that was before cartoons were even being released on VHS. This was a good story.
Thank You Loader. Reminds me of my baby brother. He's gone now, before he crossed. He took my dog's name as his own "Dragon" An name a chilli I made Dragon's Blood. It was the only thing next to my brisket he love. I miss him. We love this short story and wished it had been made into a series.
I just found out that a 4th book of the series was finally released. I remember when I was 10 years old I wrote to Yolen to have a 4th book. I guess 15 years later my request was granted! I'm re-reading the 1st 3 books before the 4th and was REALLY happy to stumble across this video - this is what got me to read the books in the first place!
@Shivadasa I just came on to look for the music to this. It played in my head as I was writing. The mystique lives on. The kind of soundtrack you want playing when you start a new project, discover a new soundtrack , standing up for yourself, or walking through a dark alley ...scratch that dark alley. Inspiring soundtrack nonetheless.
I loved this cartoon as a kid and watched it to death, and yes, it did inspire me to go out and read the original book & the rest of the series when I got older. Its a shame that CBS Storybreak and its many episodes aren't available on streaming or physical media anywhere, it was a fun show that introduced kids to abbreviated versions of some solid books they could go read for themselves. Thanks for sharing this episode!
For as much as Holywood loves remakes, I'd have more respect if they remade something like this, that's so old and under the radar that it's basically new.
OH MY GOD! I've been looking for this forever!! Fantastic! I remember this since childhood, including the music and their visual depiction of the Link between dragons and their masters.

I gotta say, this is cute, but a pretty sad representation of a fantastic trilogy that was part of what fostered my love of books.

I remember watching this, I think it was in 92 or 93. (I can place the time because I was obsessed with Link to The Past at the time), anyway, in my 8th grade literature class's textbook there was a bit of Anne McCaffery's "Dragonriders of Pern" and when I saw this cartoon, I totally created a connection between them in my head, lol.
Oh my goodness! I did exactly the same! I have read all the books in The Dragon Riders of Pern series, and immediately made the link in my mind when I first saw this iconic story many years ago. They could have expanded this into a series, it had the potential. Also, they were originally going to make a movie on Anne McCaffrey's series of books, but sadly never did, as she did not like what she saw of the adaption they started on, not long before she passed away.
Oh the magic of the internet. I was just thinking about how I saw the animated version of Dragon's Blood one time when I was 10 years old and here with a couple clicks I found it! I had actually read the book before I saw this show and I was not a fan of how alien the characters were but I did enjoy the show otherwise. I never knew it was a series until a couple years ago, I need to read the rest of the books.
Sort of. You can buy black market DVDs that are just VHS rips that have been "remastered". Sort of. Scrubbing a VHS rip through a de-noise filter is not remastering. But they look "good enough". I haven't done this with Storybreak, but I have bought other videos from these 3rd party sources and they're usually watchable, but nowhere even remotely close to what an official release off the original masters would be like.
Glad you found it. I was obsessed with this as a kid back in 1985 and kept a copy on VHS for all those years. So, this particular video is my rip of the VHS tape. I have yet to find anyone else with a cleany copy, or any copy at all, really.
While I understand why the original author had issues with it, I like it for what it is- about as good as an adaption as you can get when crammed into a half hour and with the kid unfriendly material (more explicit violence, institutionalized prostitution) removed. Still, it does look more alien than the setting actually should look.
OMG! AT LONG LAST!!!! Do you have any idea how long I've been looking for this episode? Not a scrap of it on the Internet as far as I could look. It was my favorite, and I loved the book. Thank you so much for posting it! You have no idea how much this means to me!
I saw this when it was first aired... I, too, have been searching for years! so glad I found it and can show my kids what I've been talking about all this time. lol
God! I still have this on an old video somewhere. Though this is the first time I've seen it from the begining, my experience is from the hatchery scene to the end. I didn't even know it was based of a book.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this video. Never take it down. I briefly remember seeing this as a kid and could only remember the part where the dragon grows it sheds it’s scales and walks out of it. Lol I have one of the books and hope to get the other three. They have a lot more detail and stuff but this cartoon I will always love. It’s a shame a soundtrack was never made. I have this saved in my favorites. Please never delete it or take it down.
My distinct pleasure. Yes, a soundtrack was never made, but.... I did hunt down the person who made the soundtrack, and he dug into his archives, and gave me a copy. I should really put it up here soon.
@@AdrianForte nope, don’t have the option. Unless it’s something I’m totally not seeing. I even googled it to find out and didn’t really find any thing.
+trevor brown The books are set in the far future, on a desert planet called Austar IV, which has a history and climate similar to that of Australia. The planet was originally a place where convicts would be exiled. For many generations the outcasts had adapted to their new environment and even formed a functioning society, focusing on a caste system of paid "bonders" and their debt-holders. Use of the word "slave" only ever comes up in the opening narration, not in the animation itself, or in the books. It's also worth noting that in later books, the two main characters become involved in a rebellion against this practice.
I read this book in middle school (mid 2000s). I really enjoyed it and regretted not finishing the the other two installments in this trilogy. I didn't even know this existed but I may be too old to get into it at this point.
I know I'm four years late, but if I could offer you a bit of advice, it would be to never fall into the trap of thinking you're too old to enjoy something. No harm in giving it a try, anyway (assuming you haven't already at this point).

So glad you found it, then!
you had no idea how hard was to find this episode too, an entire afternoon and finally, thanks a lot!!!
riveto Heh. I've been looking for it for years, though. Since perhaps 1995.
For some insane reason, I've decided to completely do the captions for this. I'll post again when they are completed!
Amazing animation.
@@AdrianForte lol totally you should. It would be so cool if they made a live action series of the books! It would be amazing!
@@Kipper4937 Go look at the discussion page on your channel. :)
@@AdrianForte lol I feel really bad that I don’t know how to locate that. But I’ll check online instead of the app.
@@AdrianForte nope, don’t have the option. Unless it’s something I’m totally not seeing. I even googled it to find out and didn’t really find any thing.
Great story for kids
Holy crap yes! Also Yes I read the book after seeing this on TV, and later as an adult realized but what Baggeries were....Right in the childhood
A slave and his dragon with full commercials. #poptart #rainbowbrite #mylittlepony
I was eight years old when this book and cartoon was released
Thanks. I wasn't sure if I'd ever see this again; I thought it was a Reading Rainbow.
holy shit, thanks for including the commercials too!
Holy @!#$#@$# I been wanting to see this episode for the longest time now. I didn't think a copy existed anymore.
Dude! is that captain kangaroo?? I loooved that show lol thnx for uploading these I also had this book :) forgot about the cartoon tho.
Dragon's Blood🐲
I'd forgotten about this.
I remember this as a Kid those where the Days Saturday Morning Cartoons.
