Deep down, Connor still hurts for Logan's neglicence and also for putting his mom on asylum and also makes him being alone since he was a kid. But, Connor learns how to survive with no love for years. Even he said that if Willa doesn't truly love him and just leave him whenever she wants, he's ready. It's also surprising how Connor doesn't go to dark path like being a criminal or even being a drug addict like Kendall with that kind of life.
Connor was better at accepting logan's love or lack thereof. He was born before Logan became Uber wealthy, and seemed to like, until he got old and has a midlife crisis and wants to be president, content with just being a rich playboy. The other siblings seem to not value money at all. And logan seems to largely not be capable of love except through being a provider.
This scene was actually insanely good. I don't think we've ever seen Logan acting anything like that in this show before. It puts so much in a new perspective

Logan has too much dignity and pride, he's so out of touch for reality. He's even abandoning his kids to his company because his real kid is the company, his real baby.

This may be my favorite scene of the last season. Here is Logan's humanity distilled. He's appreciating a simple folk song, a song of the common people, that could not be farther from his monstrous legacy, entirely back to his boyhood roots. There is nothing in the tape to suggest any typical Succession dynamics. There is no power play, no motive, no angle. Kerry rests her head on his shoulder. He is in the moment, present, appreciative as he can be. I think the siblings weep not just for their father but for themselves -- in their eyes I sense a hollowness... when was the last time any of them appreciated a song, or sang just to sing, or engaged with anything creative or nurturing or supportive of others? As much of a monster Logan was he was also deeply human, but in the end could not pass on the humane aspects to his children -- maybe Connor, but all the Roys grew up blinded and ultimately crippled with gilded promises.

Logan mostly always smiling and relaxing whenever he talks with Connor and Connor even call him "Pa" or "Pop". Meanwhile, for the rest of Logan's kids, all they want to get is his approval. They become aggresive if he doesn't do what they want and throw him under the bus. They all are still children inside adult's body. They are all the kids who's playing outside their dad's office. They also don't like rejection, instead of taking it like real adults, they rebel against him. Connor is the only one who takes rejection kindly but he's never giving up and keep going like how his weird campaign for being the president fail, he later wants to expanse his business on Slovenia.
We almost never see them have their own friends, their own hobbies, their own passions. It was very interesting to me when Shiv goes out and dances at Kendalls bday party. It was a big moment, we never really see any of them that vulnerable, free, or having fun in that way. And immediately after Roman later comments on it and makes fun of her. The info that Shiv had danced already made its way through the grapevine back to him. And she closes right back up. It's horribly cruel, but in the end Logan does seem to like Connor more because he made a life for himself. Connor lives off daddys money, sure. But he has interests, hobbies, he lives on his ranch out in the desert away from it all
In the end the kids are just the kids who are playing outside of their dad's office and also playing toy soldiers. They treat the company as their playground until adulthood.
Connor really won. He's the only one who has a happy memory with their dad and parted on good terms, despite always being the 'outsider' in the 4 sibling group.

But he broke them too much, and always kept them in gilded cages. When Shiv and Roman are off doing their own thing, he finds a way to yank them back in and keep them vying for his approval. As adults they absolutely should have cut themselves off from both parents and lived their own lives instead of living for daddies approval. But it's not their fault he was like that.
"He kept us outside, but he kept everyone outside. When he let you in - when the sun shone - it was warm. Yeah, it was warm in the light." This was doubly painful - they'd had glimpses of this from Logan, but only glimpses. A window, a keyhole, a screen - they were always looking in from the outside. Logan didn't know how to be a father, he only knew how to be a boss.
At the funeral Kendall said "my two siblings", and the camera never showed Connor's reaction. Connor probably didn't even flinch. He's been on the outside of his siblings, but inner circle with dad the whole time

The kids probably only saw this side of Logan a few times in their lives, and have been chasing it ever since. By being in the business, they only deprived themselves of what little genuine warmth he had to give. This show about narcissists eating themselves and each other is the saddest and most human work of art in the history of television.

I think he was ok spending time with Connor, but you don't have to like someone to spend time with them, only tolerate them. Logan didn't respect him, or thought highly of him, he simply tolerated his presence because Connor wasn't trying to prove himself worthy of him.
Also, Connor is the only one who knows Logan really is. He knows that Logan is just a power hungry man who lost his humanity and neglect his children. Look at how his half siblings are, they are act spoiled, arrogant and also compete with each others. Logan brainwashed all of them to be battling with each other and be petty. Connor even said that if Willa doesn't want him anymore and leave him for good, he's ready. Also, Connor ends up being the kid who is happy to do whatever he wants as he didn't become the president, he still wants to expanse his business at Slovenia. While others have no purpose anymore.
i truly do believe that Logan (as much as is possible for him) was acting out of the best interest in selling the company and ending "the game" so he could reset the family dynamic before his death
I think that’s definitely part of it. Him hoping the end of the family owning waystar would allow the siblings to find their own paths which would be more suitable for them and make them happier. However it’s also about Logan’s need to dominate and fucking win! So I like to think it’s a bit of both as this scene showed there was humanity there.

Yeah, cried pretty hard watching this scene today during yet another series rewatch. Just like it hurts for the kids to never get these rare moments with their father again (they did exist, such as in the Thanksgiving episode), it hurts me that this show has come to an end and that these characters' stories are finished. I truly never wanted it to end, even though it was absolutely the right decision...
Logan had vast wealth, but moments like these were his real treasure. In the end, maybe their memories together were the greatest gift Logan's company ever gave them.
For a brief moment they weren’t looking at the great business and political tyrant that was the simultaneous antagonist and guide of their lives. For just this small moment, all they saw was their dad and they missed him.
There's a sadness to the way he sings that last line: "The finest hours, that ere I spent, were spent among the lassies, oh." I think he's remembering a very dark moment. Remember the Wolf Pack?

So how I see it...... Frank, Gerri, and Karl were a reflection of ken, shiv, and rome if the children had just cooperated about whos in charge. Connor was always respected by logan because he never threw him under the bus and maybe that's why he's at the gathering (who knows how many there were like these ones), the kids were never present besides Connor which we all know why..... I think logan saw Frank, Gerri, and Karl more as his children fit for business than his other 3 brats.
I don't think Logan respected Connor at all. But he certainly trusted him because he was content with just being a rich playboy, and didn't embarrass him until the presidential race. And he doesn't really respect the old guard that much either, as we see in the show. I think this is just Logan loosening up around people he trusts.
If any one scene from the entire series can be said to capture the genius of Jesse Armstrong, this is it. It is a wrenching scene: the kids suddenly get a glimpse, but only through time and on video, of the tender side of this hard-nosed Scotsman. The filming, the acting and direction are flawless. The choice of song is the absolute cherry on the cake. Robert Burns preceded the emergence of Scottish industrialists but he would known the type. He was politically radical, a socialist, and a supporter of American independence. As a poet he knew men without women are hollow things and we got to see Logan's "lasses," gathered together by Caroline at his funeral. I've never cared so much for characters I didn't like. Succession set the bar impossibly high.
To be fair, it is Logan's fault he filled Kendall, Shiv and Roman with dreams of taking over, and seemed like he was grooming him to be until sometime just before the start of the series. The siblings can't change how they were raised just because Logan changed his mind later about how they should be.

This was doubly painful - they'd had glimpses of this from Logan, but only glimpses. A window, a keyhole, a screen - they were always looking in from the outside.

At the funeral Kendall said "my two siblings", and the camera never showed Connor's reaction. Connor probably didn't even flinch. He's been on the outside of his siblings, but inner circle with dad the whole time

The kids probably only saw this side of Logan a few times in their lives, and have been chasing it ever since. By being in the business, they only deprived themselves of what little genuine warmth he had to give. This show about narcissists eating themselves and each other is the saddest and most human work of art in the history of television.
This speaks to any of us who have lost parents… And you come across something new from them you had no part of…. And you somehow wish you could’ve been there.

Kind of runs counter to Connor's line after learning his father passed away. Unless Connor just said what he thought his siblings wanted to hear. Or because he was insensed about Logan missing his wedding...
He wanted to make him proud, and I believe he believes he did not.
I think he was ok spending time with Connor, but you don't have to like someone to spend time with them, only tolerate them. Logan didn't respect him, or thought highly of him, he simply tolerated his presence because Connor wasn't trying to prove himself worthy of him.

Also, Connor is the only one who knows Logan really is. He knows that Logan is just a power hungry man who lost his humanity and neglect his children. Look at how his half siblings are, they are act spoiled, arrogant and also compete with each others. Logan brainwashed all of them to be battling with each other and be petty. Connor even said that if Willa doesn't want him anymore and leave him for good, he's ready. Also, Connor ends up being the kid who is happy to do whatever he wants as he didn't become the president, he still wants to expanse his business at Slovenia. While others have no purpose anymore.
There's a huge difference between this little friend gathering and his arrenged birthday parties!

i truly do believe that Logan (as much as is possible for him) was acting out of the best interest in selling the company and ending "the game" so he could reset the family dynamic before his death
I think that’s definitely part of it. Him hoping the end of the family owning waystar would allow the siblings to find their own paths which would be more suitable for them and make them happier. However it’s also about Logan’s need to dominate and fucking win! So I like to think it’s a bit of both as this scene showed there was humanity there.
@@joepagram8287 I think Brian Cox mentions in an interview. He does love the kids but he doesnt know how hes just incredibly stubborn and wants things his way.
@@roychen5235 personally I think that might just be how Brian as an actor wants to humanise his character more but that’s just my opinion. If that had come from the show runner or the writers I’d be more convinced. I think perhaps he loves his children like only a narcissist can, as reflections of himself physically and mentally. Trying to make them more like him while also not allowing anyone of them to eclipse him.
Yeah, cried pretty hard watching this scene today during yet another series rewatch. Just like it hurts for the kids to never get these rare moments with their father again (they did exist, such as in the Thanksgiving episode), it hurts me that this show has come to an end and that these characters' stories are finished. I truly never wanted it to end, even though it was absolutely the right decision...
Logan had vast wealth, but moments like these were his real treasure.
In the end, maybe their memories together were the greatest gift Logan's company ever gave them.
That's why I think Connor is the smartest sibling

For a brief moment they weren’t looking at the great business and political tyrant that was the simultaneous antagonist and guide of their lives. For just this small moment, all they saw was their dad and they missed him.
I wonder if Kendall reaching out and holding Shiv's arm was in the script or spontaneous.
There's a sadness to the way he sings that last line: "The finest hours, that ere I spent, were spent among the lassies, oh."

So how I see it...... Frank, Gerri, and Karl were a reflection of ken, shiv, and rome if the children had just cooperated about whos in charge. Connor was always respected by logan because he never threw him under the bus and maybe that's why he's at the gathering (who knows how many there were like these ones), the kids were never present besides Connor which we all know why..... I think logan saw Frank, Gerri, and Karl more as his children fit for business than his other 3 brats.
I don't think Logan respected Connor at all. But he certainly trusted him because he was content with just being a rich playboy, and didn't embarrass him until the presidential race. And he doesn't really respect the old guard that much either, as we see in the show. I think this is just Logan loosening up around people he trusts.
If any one scene from the entire series can be said to capture the genius of Jesse Armstrong, this is it. It is a wrenching scene: the kids suddenly get a glimpse, but only through time and on video, of the tender side of this hard-nosed Scotsman. The filming, the acting and direction are flawless. The choice of song is the absolute cherry on the cake. Robert Burns preceded the emergence of Scottish industrialists but he would known the type. He was politically radical, a socialist, and a supporter of American independence. As a poet he knew men without women are hollow things and we got to see Logan's "lasses," gathered together by Caroline at his funeral. I've never cared so much for characters I didn't like. Succession set the bar impossibly high.

To be fair, it is Logan's fault he filled Kendall, Shiv and Roman with dreams of taking over, and seemed like he was grooming him to be until sometime just before the start of the series. The siblings can't change how they were raised just because Logan changed his mind later about how they should be.
