The Most Hated American Woman In The 1960s. Hear Her Speak On TV.

- This amazingly blunt television program aired locally in South Texas on a TV station in Austin. The two debaters were well known in America at the time and if you read below, both had extraordinarily complicated and disastrous experiences during their lifetimes. Could you imagine this program running on TV today?
Madalyn Murray O'Hair was an outspoken activist supporting atheism & separation of church and state. In 1963 she founded American Atheists & called herself a "militant feminist".
O'Hair was known for a lawsuit that challenged the policy of mandatory prayers & Bible reading in Baltimore public schools. The Supreme Court ruled that officially sanctioned mandatory Bible-reading in public schools was unconstitutional. In 1964 Life magazine called her as "the most hated woman in America".
Because of hostility in Baltimore against her family Murray left Maryland with her sons settling in Austin, Texas. She founded American Atheists, a nationwide movement which defends the civil rights of non-believers, works for the separation of church and state and addresses issues of First Amendment public policy. She became the public voice and face of atheism in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s.
O'Hair continued to be a polarizing figure into the 1980s. She served as "chief speechwriter" for Larry Flynt's 1984 presidential campaign. She was regularly invited to appear on TV talk shows as a guest.
Her son William J. Murray became a Christian in 1980 and later a Baptist minister. Murray O'Hair commented, "I repudiate him entirely and completely for now and all times ... he is beyond human forgiveness."
In the 1990s, American Atheists staff consisted of O'Hair, her son & a handful of support personnel. On August 27, 1995, O'Hair, her son Jon Garth Murray, and her granddaughter Robin Murray O'Hair disappeared from their home. A typewritten note was attached to the locked office door, saying "The Murray O'Hair family has been called out of town on an emergency basis." Garth Murray ordered US$600,000 worth of gold coins from a San Antonio jeweler, but took delivery of only $400,000 worth of coins. American Atheists employees received several phone calls from Robin and Jon, but neither explained why they had left or when they would return; employees reported that their voices sounded strained and disturbed.
Ultimately an investigation focused on David Waters, a felon with a violent history who had worked for American Atheists. He pled guilty to stealing $54,000 from the organization.[ Shortly after the theft of the money was discovered, O'Hair published an article in the American Atheists newsletter in which she exposed the theft of the money. O'Hair also claimed that, at the age of 17, Waters had killed another teenager.
Federal agents concluded that Waters and his accomplices had kidnapped all three Murray/O'Hair family members, forced them to withdraw the missing funds, went on several shopping sprees with their money and credit cards, and killed and dismembered all three people. In January 2001, after Waters pled guilty to conspiracy and told the federal agents that the O'Hairs were buried on a Texas ranch. He subsequently led them to their bodies.
O’Hair’s legacy continues. Episode 10 in season 7 of Forensic Files dealt with the disappearance of Madalyn Murray O'Hair. And a 2017 Netflix original movie, The Most Hated Woman in America, is a loose dramatization of O'Hair's life. And an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent entitled "Eosphoros"[48] is loosely based on O'Hair's murder.
Dr Edward Bauman's life also took strange twists and turns. He earned a PhD in Systemic Theology from Boston University in 1954 and then taught Religion at American University. While teaching at American University he began a weekly television series that ran for 34 years. Bauman Bible Telecasts was formed & distributed his Emmy winning series to TV stations, churches and other organizations around the world. A Time Magazine article published in 1979 titled "American Preaching: A Dying Art?" named Bauman as one of "seven star preachers" in America.
In a letter to Foundry United Methodist Church some years later Bauman wrote that he had had "relationships of a sexual nature . . . with several women in the congregation." On his TV show he said that he never had sexual intercourse with the women. The contacts involved "hugging and affectionate kissing". Bauman agreed to undergo outpatient psychiatric counseling at Johns Hopkins Hospital and retired. "I know I made a serious mistake. I am sorry for the people I hurt. I am making all the restitution I know how to make, and I am going to rebuild my life having learned from this mistake."
Bauman's admission came at a time of increasing reports of sexual abuse by clergy. According to a story in the United Methodist newsletter, 13% of pastors in five Protestant denominations acknowledged having sexual intercourse with parishioners.

Dr. Bauman actually just passed only 2 years ago. I would've liked to meet with him to speak to him. I think having sexual relationships with other consenting adults isn't the type of sexual perversion that's the problem in these cultist religions. It's the sexual abuse of children. So, with that being said I would of liked to speak to him. I hear he was a very nice man. Wonder where his soul is now?
I went to 12 years of private Christian-Lutheran schools from 1960-1972. It should be illegal to brainwash vulnerable children about fantasy, superstition and then give the institutes of anti-rational and logical thought all kinds of tax exemptions. Just as a pedophile does, religion wants to get them while they are young. By age 20 I was an atheist 100%.
@@nopepunx1981 I would imagine, taking into account his having spoke of God's grace, that he's (or whatever part of "him" is still coherent to us) that he's part of whatever Heaven is. Hell's for the living dead, all around us......I agree with your comment about sexual relationships completely
I remember this. My father used it as an example of freedom of speech. No anger. No judgement. Seems like current world has forgotten how to listen and respect each other.
Now people are shamed, and cancelled for their own ideas because they might question the government's and the media's portrayal of reality.

Sad how we no longer have these types of constructive debates between opposing ideas. Nowadays it's just about silencing the people who think differently from you
We do have debates like these. You just have to go watch them...
I'd argue we debate better today than those days where it was suppressed to have. Watch Sam Harris and Jordan Peterson debate you'll see.
There are modern debates very much like these. They're just not broadcast on television, but you can easily find them on TH-cam. Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins debated frequently for the atheist side.
I disagree with that. I think back then was more silencing than today is, but today you have a lot of opinions co Stanly coming at you when you say something, thats for sure.

The most important component of a debate besides the subject is stating truthfulness. O’Hare makes numerous statements that are completely false. The other person in the debate was too polite to point this out! Must have been his gentlemanly demeanor!

It's not by a long shot. She didn't even present the definition of atheism or ask the other side to prove any god or supernatural being exists. There have been many far more intellectual debates in later years. Look up the videos of debates featuring Christopher Hitchens.
This woman ended up murdered, dismembered, and buried in a shallow grave out in the desert. It's very sad.

Love her or hate her, you got to admit she was a very intelligent, well spoken woman. 🙂
I was just saying that. Bauman was a very smart(doesn't show in this video) man as well. He had a PhD and worked until he was 91 years old teaching etc. I don't believe in his views, but I have heard he was a decent man. Even though he was having sex with a bunch of women in his congregation, unlike the Priests, at least they were consenting adults. I don't agree with him, but at least he was open to having the discussion. Unlike most preachers of his time. I do love Mrs. Ohair tho. Too bad she was murdered(by her own people infact). Breaks my heart.
Love her
@@nopepunx1981They were not "her people" 🙄.
Her oldest son, William Murray wrote a book about her and said she was horribly abusive when he and his brother were growing up. He said that she tried to get him to put rat poison in his grandfathers coffee to kill him. She hated men, America and God.
Intelligent and in HELL, and causing millions to join her and Mr. Hitchens where they are NOW and wailing their heads off to no avail!!! Doing this today you would at least have a split audience. Doing this in the 1960s takes real guts, her resolve was intense.

She was so right calling out the hypocrisy of religion, get that crap out of the government, make the churches pay taxes if they want to write laws. Make all those higher ups in religious leadership live on poverty wages like they expect us to live that way. We are regressing as a society rather than progressing, and religion plays a huge factor in that. Honestly, evangelizing in other countries or on the streets of the US should be outlawed.
In my opinion, churches and charity's should get tax exemption based on the money that goes to the community or said charity. (Not payroll and a huge building) The original reason churches were tax exempt was works based on what the Bible dictates ( poor, sick, drunkards, elderly such as that) the federal government took over that role. The CEO'S of charitys are making millions, buying hummers, living rich, just like televangelist. Its insane to me. For instance people have been donating to the national heart, lung, cancer and more societies for a century, and no one can afford treatment. How can you be for profit and a charity? Save for her personal life!😮
As an atheist I think she is a logical and reasonable person. But I've also learnt that religion really has such a hold on people's minds that the same points we argue today as atheists are still the same ones that were argued even half a century ago. Really hard to change people's minds when they have been driven into them since childhood.
If it's not one religion it's the other, Ive found that most "a-religious" people are just that, those who claim to be atheists are typically religious in a cultural sense, where they idolize other people or themselves alone.
💯
Minds are changing though. More and more non believers all the time.
Hard, but not impossible! Worth every effort!

Refreshing hearing this woman explain herself. Imagine hearing people talk like this on TV today. Wouldn't happen.
O’Hair was a hypocrite, she railed against organized religion and yet ironically she created an organized religion called American Atheists that was a money printing machine very much in the manner of a Jim Baker and Joel Osteen, it was a front to launder her militant feminist ideology, but in the end one of her disgruntled ex employees, that she accused of stealing money from her organization, brutally murdered her, decapitated and buried her in a sandy pit along with her son and granddaughter. Ironically her other son became a devout Christian pastor.
@@patricktuorto atheism is a religion like bald is a hair colour. She was murdered in 95 so you can relax...
@@Wildrover82 Putting aside your failed non sequitur attempt at a comparison, her organization "American Atheism" was in fact an organized religion, it made her a mint and that was ultimately the reason for her demise, ironically martyred for her "church of non belief" All her work undone and reversed thanks to the free market exchange of ideas, so I am very relaxed, but thanks anyway for you concern.
@@patricktuorto it was not a religion. As an organisation it might have had the same legal status as a religion, but not a religion.
@@Wildrover82 The people who ran the organization "American Atheism" had all the hallmarks of being "religious" including how some dealt with so-called infidels, like the puritanical religious zealots who persecuted and disowned their kids if they found out they were gay or a non believer, O’Hair herself disowned her son for becoming a pastor. Atheism like Christianity or any other belief "or disbelief" system isn't inherently bad, but can become so if organized and corrupted by money, power and ideological aims, (I'll also include governments in this) in O'Hair's case, it was a front indoctrination of feminism and communism.

Thank you for sharing this David. As I get older I am amazed just how much we as people today have the same exact conversations that we as a society have been having for decades. It only gives weight to the saying that our lives, although seem long to us, are just tiny blips in human history. It seems as though technology moves us forward, our thoughts and ideals remain unchanged and unprogressed. This only emphasizes the need for historic learning at ALL points in one's life. When I was thirteen I found an old Hustler magazine in an abandoned shack that had an interview with her. I grew up in a very restrictive religious household, and was no longer religious, myself, so reading her words were a formative experience for me, even moreso than the other contents of the magazine whose forbidden allure rapidly waned a quite a bit. She was the one who made me realize not only freaks and the drugged-out rockers I listened to were were atheists, but ordinary people were, as well. That same issue also had an interview with Church of Satan founder Anton Szandor LaVey; quite a score for a young Marilyn Manson fan like myself, hehe, but unfortunately my ultra-religious older sister went snooping in my room and found it and gave it to my mom and they burned it.
She was instrumental in Larry Flynt's presidential campaign. Wasn't he the founder of Hustler?

There were also Playboys, Penthouse and other random ones, but the articles, editorials and interviews weren't nearly as interesting to me. The issues spanned over the time Flynt was shot. I remember there was one Hustler article about a straight man who turned out to be genetically female, and I became convinced for like two years that was my issue because everybody would always ask me if I was a boy or girl.

Wow! just Wow. one of the best debates I've seen, I never heard of Madalyn Murray O'Hair or her opponent. both of them come across intelligent in their belief. I don't think this kind of debate, or this actual program could be aired on television now a days. another Gem David Hoffman.
As I said in my previous comment, I never heard of Madalyn Murray O'Hair so I did a little research on her. even though my religious belief is different from her it's sad the way she her son Jon Garth Murray, and her granddaughter Robin Murray O'Hair died.
Brave woman, smart woman, and a true humanist.
She was unpleasant
Smart??? She got murdered and dismembered and got her family killed except for the one that found Jesus I think he's the smart one here not her
@@christopherlee2917 Jesus got beaten, humiliated, nailed to a cross, starved and stabbed.
See the flaw in your logic? Smart people get killed all the time... what YOU'RE doing is taking a pre-existing bias, rationalising violence to anyone that doesn't share your ideology... and, by doing so, demonstrating a lack of morals or empathy. Pretty much exactly the same sick Christian moral relativism that humanists accuse! Muslims do it... Christians do it... and both sides accuse the other, but never see it in themselves.
And it's not just the religious. Remember how a lot of people on the American right laughed when Nancy Pelosis husband got attacked with a claw-hammer, leaving his skull shattered and his brain damaged? THIS is the evil we permit when we see 'some people' as less deserving of life... when we see 'ourselves' as inarguably more deserving.
This is why many Christians, particularly American evangelicals, disgust us humanists.
Damn, she is good.
Great debate, very informative..
You go girl! She was amazing. Made her antagonist squirm in his skinny seat.
She usually made her opposition look foolish especially the clergy. Adore her

Fun fact: her son became a baptist minister that lobbied DC on behalf of persecuted Christians throughout the world.
Her grandson murdered her.
@@thealternative9580 you are not getting that from the synopsis found here.
@@judierenfrow8073 geeze! I had to look that up. I did not see anything that suggested the murderer had a family connection to O’Hare but what a macabre murder.

If only we still debated like this,. with civility instead of sociopathy.
I never hated her. I was a very young girl when I heard her in a debate hosted by Phil Donahue. It felt as though she was reading both my miind and what I knew in my heart. She let me know that I wasn't alone in what I inherently knew.
When she spoke, I heard myself in her too.
This along with her son’s interview are interesting. He reveals a great insight.
Her son, however, is a kind compassionate man, who speaks about free speech and opposes Marxism.

What an awesome human she is
I remember my father, a dedicated Catholic who did practice the blessed sacraments and believed in the faith, how much he approved of this woman looking out for our constitution. We do need more open debate, especially about the multiple transgenderism issues.
Good on him
For discussions, interviews on "transgenderism", I recommend
Jordan Petersons videos with
Abigail Shrier, and other various videos with Helen Joyce. All on TH-cam.
The description you included is haunting to read in comparison with the civil discussion I am listening to.
This video shows an amazing moment in cultural history. I think O’Hair felt the brunt of the saying “only children and crazy people tell the truth”. 10:42 Why can’t there be such intellectual sparring and non violent discussion today?
I wonder if her and Chris Hitchens were related. She is one of the few people that could argue as precisely as he could. Dude with glasses makes a good effort, benefiting from his lived experience of going to school with Martin Luther King Jr. and admitting Joseph Campbell like open mindedness, saying G*d is a he, she or it, and acknowledged other faiths and philosophies. O’Hair came across as being on the high functioning autistic spectrum as well. Another reason she might have been misunderstood.
the people change, but the debate remains the same. o'hair was someone worth listening to and i wish more people would have listened to her.
great video!
I would miss your insight...you are one of a kind.
Well, the title 'Is Atheism The Religion Of Future?' is a belief profiling loaded bias for a start, so there is inaccuracy right from it's beginning.
My goodness, what a brilliant and profound exchange of ideas between two intellectuals. I could CERTAINLY relate to both sides of the debate (reminiscent of Ayn Rand). Though earning the title of 'the most hated woman in America' .. she wasn't killed for her ideas as much as for her money and revenge. Thank you David for posting this most important, thought provoking video!🕊
Sadly all we get these days people talking over each other

@@LindaCasey just learned a new word. Thanks
I heard about her thru matt dillahunty, all i can say is wow, in the 60’s no less? This lady is a hero.
My mother was friends with Madalyn and I was friends with her granddaughter, Robin. My parents were both atheists and I had never been to church. I honestly didn't know what all the controversy was. When they disappeared, it was a shock because we knew them personally. I'm now a Christian, for which Madalyn would have hated me, and I feel sad for what she stood for. Yes, we have the freedom of religion, and that's wonderful, but seeing her through adult eyes, and through a Christian's eyes, makes me sad. Thank you for posting, Mr. Hoffman!
EDIT: I wanted to add that I've felt a deep sadness and grief over what happened to Robin, especially. She was young, just a couple of years younger than me, and caught up in the influence of her grandmother and the whole environment she was raised in. I see her as a naive victim. They all met a horrible end, but the death of Robin really hurt.
Was Madalyn as unpleasant and bigoted in real life as she conveyed on film?
@@matthewmcalister2165 Yes, she was a very serious woman but, to be honest, I grew up surrounded by anti-religious, strict and serious people, so I barely noticed that she was like that. This is the first time I've mentioned anything about my family's connection to the O'Hairs. It's a "dirty secret" and I felt this was a safe way to unload my grief about Robin. She and I both grew up in similar, unhappy circumstances, so I relate to her.
A _naive victim_ ? Did you mean, in the sense that literally *_all_* children are _naive victims_ of their parents' chosen religions?
@@Tokinjester She was young, innocent, and naive. She had her whole life ahead of her. But it was cut short because of her grandmother. Have some respect for the dead.

Her point about the discrepancy between the way intellectual deistic people speak about God and their beliefs, and the way it is largely received by the general theistic public was spot on and extremely pertinent to today. It is a point I've often tried to make but rarely conveyed well regarding Jordan Peterson, in particular, I think he is both often misunderstood by a more literalistic or theistic audience, and he himself misunderstands his own audiences level of understanding in his own way of thinking and belief around God. While the two may be moving closer together, It seems to me that many of his audiences mistake some of his language around God as pertaining to the literal, and he mistakes their understanding as figurative and mythological.
I just went to a lecture of his, a couple days ago, and I concur. Though I think most evangelicals just are hoping that he'll get saved.
American atheist activist Madalyn Murray O'Hair (1919-1995) was murdered in 1995 by David Roland Waters, a former employee of American Atheists, along with her son Garth and granddaughter Robin. The three disappeared from Austin, Texas on September 30, 1995, and their bodies were not found until 2001.
She was accused of stealing money from that organization, and this is how she, her son, and her granddaughter ended up.
Madalyn Murray O'Hair's eldest son, William J. Murray, converted to Christianity in 1980, becoming a born-again Christian. In the 1960s, William was a figurehead for the atheism movement, and his mother, O'Hair, was an activist who supported atheism, separation of church and state, and Holocaust denial. O'Hair founded American Atheists in 1963 and served as its president until 1986, when William's brother, Jon Garth Murray, succeeded her.

If you mean what harm people do in the name of religion, I could be with you. Sounds like the gun thing, guns don't kill people.
Either way.......will We ever stop creating destructive institutions compared to nothing but positive ones?
@Instramark I think it's in our DNA to fight - for social status (I'm better than you), religion (my views are right and yours are wrong), politics (power over others) etc etc. It's my opinion that Jesus simply wanted to give us another point of view; there is a win-win option where everyone could benefit. For it to work, we must all agree to a common goal - simply love one another and treat everyone with dignity and respect. That would include restraining from mocking others. There is no respect or dignity in that. When Jesus was asked which of his commandment was the greatest....it wasn't "believe in me or you will go to Hell"....it simply was "Love one another." This lady is obviously articulate and well read, so I don't know what to make of it when she focuses on the negative aspects of the Bible - and there are plenty - and not the positive.....unless she has a selfish agenda....
You had to be incredibly brave to be so public with your atheism in the 60’s. The percentage of people that are religious drops each decade and I’m certain that will continue into the future.
and still, we are no closer to understanding, one way or the other. Hence, the question remains.
Unless one lives in the American South.
