- This is the stroy of the legendary Box Lake.
The Western United States holds a wide range of opportunities for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. With both the Southern and Central Rockies running through it, Colorado is truly a mountain paradise. For a lot of folks like myself a trip out to this great state would be the absolute highlight of the summer. With Denver's airport and the proximity to most of the Midwest, there are bound to be a lot of visitors. Breckenridge, Aspen, Durango, and Vail are all well known "tourist" destinations. However, Estes Park Colorado is one of the most popular mountain towns in the entire state. This has almost everything to do with it sitting on the doorstep of the world famous Rocky Mountain National Park. Box lake is a lesser known alpine lake that sits on the Wild Basin Side of Rocky Mountain National Park. It is best reached by following the Thunder Lake Trail, which is around a seven mile hike (One way). Once at the lake you will find a small path on the backside of the outlet. Following this trial will bring you up and over the pass and into the tiny saddle that holds Box Lake. This high country gem holds a very hungry population of wild brook trout. When I say it is almost a fish on every cast, I’m not kidding. They do not see many flies or spinners throughout the year and are not afraid to eat.

This is one of my comfort videos I keep coming back to
That means so much Michael. I have to admit that I come back to it a fair bit myself.
11 months late to this!? I’m still going back into the archives to find some I haven’t yet watched. Man these are killer!
Be careful how far you go back!! The vids get pretty rough haha
What a gem of a lake!
Just incredible!
Gotta love the twofers.
Doesn’t get much better!
Great adventure. What better than everyone experiencing the joy of catching mountain brookies on the fly.
Something out of a dream
family, flys, fins. doesnt get any better!. rage on
You are so right there!
You have one cool family. RMNP is definitely one of my favorite places.
They are kind of the best! Haha mine as well!
Did you move to NM? Man I’ve been watching your vids since you came to the Rio Grande. I will show you fly fishing in the land of enchantment. Message me back!!!
Love this one. I have talked my wife into two half marathons but none ended with fly fishing! We gotta get up there and make that hike to the lake.
Thank you Jason! You really should!
Great video, given the map, I was not surprised to see Box Lake as a destination, however the hike looks strenuous. Obviously no fishing pressure on that lake. I hope you and your dad, and other family members make it back to these lakes another year.
It’s not an easy hike by any means! I hope so too!!
Nice video. I wish New Mexico had more brook trout.
Me too! They are so much fun!
I love the voice over / storytelling format!More please
Thank you so much!
Beautiful family, awesome adventure!
Thank you so much!
Fantastic! I recall burning lungs but not eager legs. The lakeside trout lunch makes me hungry every time I see it. I will return to Box someday if only in spirit. Thanks so much for recording this. UJ2
It was a trip to remember!
Lovely. Sharing this amazing country with family takes it to another level. Big ups on your story telling skills as well.
It was such a treat! Thank you so much!!
Great video! Looks like an incredible trip
Thank you so much! It was so much fun!
So poetic Mike, loved listening to this!
Thank you so much!! I’m so glad you liked it
Love the video man! Your dialogue on the end of trip melancholy really resonated with me. You described a feeling I’ve felt so many times on trips with family and friends. Great reminder on appreciating the moments like that when we’re blessed with them.
I’m so glad I’m not alone in that feeling. As time goes on it’s one of those things that eats at me more and more
Box is gorgeous (as many cant make the hike). Another great vid. Throw those guts in the woods though not the water! Keep the CO vids coming man.
Gorgeous lake! I could never bring myself to eat a wild trout though. All I want from trout is the chance to outsmart them and to watch them swim off to give someone else the opportunity. I am a selective snob. I have lost count of the number of local panfish I have eaten.
To each their own!!
Great video man!
Thank you so much!!
You're a fabulous storyteller, Mike. That was an engaging and original video.
I am so glad folks like the story! That’s all I’m trying to do, I just wanna tell a good story!
I was going to say I love to eat a few fresh brookies every now and then.
Those were some tasty looking fish - the only thing missing was a pan of cornbread to go with them. In Louisiana, fish are rated by their ability as table fare; speckled trout (spotted sea trout), flounder, Opelousas (flathead) catfish in freshwater, etc....my father in law used to tease me, calling redfish "trash fish" - great game fish, decent eating fish, but not as good as his beloved specks...people down here think I'm missing some marbles when I tell them it's pretty much catch and release for the trout I catch in the mountains - here, the inshore saltwater marshes are fish factories, and success is if you have a full ice chest.
Trash fish! How dare he! Ha, I hear you Ian. Louisiana native here displaced to Colorado who found fly fishing-now I’m ruined. However, Next time I’m in the Atchafalaya or out down in Venice or GI, I’m dedicated to landing a slot Red on a fly. Bonne chance mon ami!
Any advice for fishing Eagle and Thunder Lakes?
Bad ass as usual Mike. Where did you park to make the journey to box lake. May have to try that.
It is one tough day trip! It is the Wild Basin Trailhead parking!
Family fishing! Awesome family! Do they know how to set their own rigs? Mine don't 😔
These are certified fishy folk! They can rig with the best of em!!
Another beautiful video. Was Box Lake impacted by the mega -fires a few years ago?
👏🙌🔥❤️
Bro this is so cool! Family is so awesome!
