Some people are too lazy to count the number of cars in the parking lot, or the items in a store, the bricks on a house, the tiles on the floor... I looked to the end of the sentence to see if that number was worth the time to read, and decided it wasn't.
My mom (now deceased) and my niece occasionally do that while eating. I don't agree that they disagreed with anything in the conversation but I'm going to pay more attention the next time I'm eating with my niece. I think for them it was just something they did while eating.
