Such a pleasant change of pace for a horn player after binging all the staple horn composers. The musical shift from lively classical and grandiose over-the-top romanticism to a surreal, 20th-century ambience is fascinating! I can't wait to see Hovhaness's work start to resurface on the modern stage.
You might also enjoy his Symphony no. 29 for Baritone Horn and Orchestra, Op. 289 (1976), which is another great piece.

Wonderful recordning! Had the pleasure of some private lessons with the soloist at International Horn Society conventions. He was all about tone colour, and expression. This recording highlights those!

Amazing. First off, the horn player is fantastic, some of the greatest sounds I've ever heard for this instrument; he was a world-class player. The composition is brilliant; those who only enjoy music in 4 movements will be disappointed because this composer has different ideas; also, academics with their love for dissonance and hatred of melodies will dislike this. Average people love it. Thank you David Amos, Meir Rimon, and the entire Israel Philharmonic, and of course great thanks to the late Alan Hovhaness.

The gatekeepers of music do not want you to hear this kind of music; it does not have the rigid movements they are used to; it also has little or no dissonance and beautiful melodies. VERBOTEN!
