I think Will is making a great point that walks aren’t just “walks” but great opportunities for learning skills and behavior. Yet I see so many dog owners with zero engagement and with their eyes glued to their phones. How fun is that if you’re a dog? Leadership isn’t something you only switch on when needed - it’s something you work on all the time. Thanks for another good video!

Agreed! I can’t even figure out how to hold a phone while with our puppy. Puppy and me time is just that. No other distractions. I talk to him on the walk and praise and correct and treat! :)

My Dane's morning routine consists of sleeping till 10 and then moving to the couch for a nap 😂😂😂 We don't usually get obedience in until late afternoon... Excellent advice and great job editing joe! I love the piggy bank part ❤️🤓

Will, I love your videos for a lot of reasons, but one of them is because I always find myself saying "Oh, DUH!". You explain things very simply and effectively to the point that it FEELS like common sense - but so many people forget the small things that it really ISN'T common sense. Thanks for all the info you provide in such a calm way. You're a great trainer, my friend

Nice! I do this every morning with my service dog. I have him sit pretty with eye contact before letting him go outside. Then he will sit and wait for his food. Sometimes, I even leave the room for a few moments. He usually goes back to sleep for a couple of hours and then we will do our walk where he will heel for a few blocks before I let him sniff around and repeat. Once we are home, he either practice tricks/learn new ones, service dog tasks or anything I feel he needs tightening up on, like recall or focus. He is my boy and I love him so much!!!

Hi Jessica, that was my daughters name, she just went to heaven recently that I miss her terribly. My ADD, Anxiety and depression had been severe, until I got gifted from friends wounded warriors I helped in the past he gave me 💙My Tyson.. German shepherd puppy, I used to raise them with my father, but many years ago so I forgot everything! Do you have any suggestions my doctor said to train them myself because financially I am on a fixed income and disability.
Have so many questions and I don’t know where to go to ask… Will has been the best thing I have found, he makes it simple straight to the point and 💙My Tyson just within days has learned to sit stay rollover speak, I was having him get on my chest to calm my anxiety. I don’t get it much but when I do.. now he’s getting too big, I don’t know where to ask questions to teach him myself and I’m not sure I should take him to the doggie beach… Although he loves it, when I come back home and take him into a store to get something quickly or somewhere I have to go he was in complete obedience in a hill, but since the doggy beach, I’m losing his focus, he pulls on the leash, and I have to correct him several times looking elsewhere instead of walking obediently by my side.. do you have any tips honey???

I am so sorry for your loss and hope that you have continued to work with Tyson following Will. I have followed several trainers but the words that came to me as I read your post was 'the slower you go, the quicker you will get there' I found d this helpful because my anxiety had me focusing more on where I wanted to go than on where I was at!! I wish you well 😊

YES YES YES! I am not professionally trained but every single morning my girl and I do our structured walk/training. My rescue does not walk as loose as yours do - yet - but we are working on that as well as safely walking on the sidewalk on her leash in a very busy industrial neighborhood filled with bikes, cars, trucks, people and dogs. We "wait" at each crossroad until it is safe to cross and then proceed. She is being desensitized to the very loud noises of passing vehicles (garbage trucks and 16 wheelers are the worst!) She has come a long way in the past year from spending her first year in a crate, in a kennel in a warehouse filled with 200+ other dogs and from a highly reactive one-year-old who was afraid of almost everything to the dog she is today. And we continue to build our partnership and working on her relationship with other dogs and building the "Calm Girl" attitude that is going to serve her well.

Wow!! I am so very happy that I found Will Atherton! I have been searching and searching. I have a purebred German Shepherd, I got gifted to me after I had several losses in my family including my 33-year-old daughter and best friend.. my doctor said this was a perfect opportunity to make him a service dog, but also in a pandemic I lost my job so financially I can’t afford to pay a service dog trainer. My doctor said do it myself go online but my mind is not the same.. Through this grief. Will makes it so very plain simple into the point. Because of him he has given me great hope and Tyson has learned so much in just a few days of watching Will videos! Thank you from the bottom of my heart and Tyson thanks you!

Thank you Will. Your videos have been a huge help in training our working Cocker.
    Simple, yet extremely effective tips.
One question, we our walk consists of off and on lead and I always start with on lead, and vary where and when and for how long we let Casper off the lead. Is that the right thing to do?
We always when letting him off the lead start with multiple sit, wait recall, or wait until we walk back to him before allowing him to be off lead.
Or should it be more structured.

He is doing great and I love all your videos they have helped so much, his training has been smooth and rewarding since day 1. I am curious about your opinion on the subject of when to Neuter your dog, will neutering too early or late affect his training? Do you recommend a certain age to do it or to do it at all? I respect your professional opinion on the matter, but I am well aware that you are not a vet that you are a behaviorist. I have looked around for videos on the matter and can not find one.

My puppy (15 months old) is very unnerved by vehicles so we go anywhere that is not bothered by traffic. Wonderful to see progress but loose lead walking is a maaaassive challenge. Got the slip lead, time corrections (I believe) correctly but he is extremely driven by things that move which also adds to the challenge. I am committed to walking with the slip lead. Some dogs just take longer than others is my take on it. Different dogs, different personalities, different levels of success as we progress :) .

    • @PeterFagerberg
      @PeterFagerberg ปีที่แล้ว +2

I might have something you could try… my Aussie suddenly started to be unnerved by jet airplanes (go figure!). My solution was to turn every such encounter into a positive one. As soon as she spotted or heard a jet we would sit, calmly talk about it and then end with a treat or toy. Now she knows that jets are good things because they bring food or fun. Her anxiety is gone and the problem is almost solved. Slowly jets are becoming less and less important in her world… And of course it’s important that you remain super calm since your dog will read your state of mind like an open book :-)

We have a 2 mnth German Pointer and he is so full of energy. He is well trained (knows basic commands) but we struggle to temper his enrgy. Especially in the mornings.
We used to have a Vizsla, but he was so much more balanced and I'm not sure it is just the character, or if it just me (us) who needs to do things diiferently. (probably the latter ;-))

@@kacieanatole8696 I have been practicing this change of direction when he passes next me. Taking a radical back, left or right. It is all about patience and taking the time for the walk. Beautiful dogs. They sure love you. Can you explain more about only feeding them once a day because they are older? Do they just stop getting hungry in the mornings? Years ago we had a Pit Bull who would throw up bile in the mornings and that was because my husband thought feeding once a day was the way to go but it wasn't (according to our vet). Years and years later, we have a Boston Terrier who throws up bile if he goes too long without eating (he's 9). We still feed twice a day. I can't imagine going all day without food so I wouldn't make my dogs do it. None of us are overweight. 😁 Just curious if there are some studies out there on this. I want to do the best for my dogs.

It sounds like you are doing what your dog needs. I imagine that Will is also doing command work and treating...so the dogs are unlikely to have a totally empty stomach.

If you feed right after training/walking, aren’t you feeding them too soon? Concerns about bloat, etc…..

I bought your cane corso guide I found it really good but my friend is a behaviourist so I’m following his instructions because I don’t want to confuse my dog with different ideologies. I like the morning walk idea it makes a lot of sense, our pup takes my daughter to school because we had read it’s good to give them a job if you were me would you switch this for a early morning walk? ( I leave for work at 6:30 am )

We live in a condo building in a big city. My pup spends most of his morning walk peeing on things. What is an effective way to let him do his business as needed, but keeping him on a heal-like walk with me?

Exactly! My beagle is super nice and obedient until I go in public, which makes socialization very difficult. It really is a catch 22!

I think that's because of the distractions outside, I'm trying incremental steps for distractions, inside the house, then the garden, then gradual outside in quiet surroundings working up to busy streets

@@linedezainde have to move super gradually, basically anytime you move to a new space, the backyard, the porch, the front yard, you will have to proof basic obedience behaviors again. The more new spaces you do this in the more your dog will learn that what is expected is the same regardless of the situation.

He is Right. My Dogs throw a Family reunion each morning when they first see me. After the.petting and greetings. I put myself in the leasership role. This is for 2 GSDs and a Pit Bull. If I don't the Dogs take off the walk, tangled leashes, play fighting and picking up every piece of garbage. It's No Fun and then they ignore me when I give a command. We walk in a business district during rush hour. So listening to me is important. Permission to eat their food is also important they understand you control the food. If one Dog trys to eat out of anothers bowl. I tell that by name that's so in so's food don't eat it. Now all the dogs know who's food that is and Iam fair and that everyone is equal.
