    We have worked our butts of since 2019 building out pantry. Last year our gardens did so well that i filled our 9 x 12 room, so my husband went and bought a 12 x 14 storage building, and we made it into a canning kitchen. That canning is is also full from the gardens this year. I always vacuum seal our dry goods and place them in food grade buckets. We have 4 chest freezers that are full at all times. We rotate , eat and replace. Im currently using sugar, salt, flour, and cornmeal from 2021. All is good here.

      That is amazing, and all your hard work paid off! I JUST finished the last of my dry corn (for cornmeal) from 2021 as well. With prices only going up, it's nice to be eating foods that were purchased at a cheaper price. I love that you were able to create a canning kitchen!!

    Amen, girl! God is always there for us! 2019 I ended up with triple Negative Breast cancer, as I was going through Chemo my husband ended up in the hospital for 3 months! And as bad as that sounds (or what I am about to say) it was a BLESSING to me because they were able to take care of him, where I couldn't. He has MD and I am his main caregiver. So to say the LEAST, I couldn't do it and God knew that. Hubby was being taken care of 100% better than I could have and God knew I needed HIS help. Oh, it definitely goes on from there, but He is our comforter and I rely on Him DAILY! I am binge-watching your videos today hehe And I have to say, I LOVE THEM! TY TY TY and Many blessings to you and your HUGE family :)

    We live in the CO Rocky Mountains and I always decant everything if its not in a can or jar or gamma lid bucket. Mice, water bugs, gnats, black flies, mosquitoes, moths, etc will get into anything. I generally use glass jars either gallon or quart sized for our storage and a few acrylic ones (usually when food items go fast like crackers and jerky/beef sticks) and like you, I didn’t label some jars and I forgot what was in it and my poor granddaughter used salt instead of sugar in her cake 🫤 so I bought the chalk labels and chalk pen and label everything I decant into glass jars.

      Great idea! Love the chalk label idea as well. I need to start using those ❤️

    My biggest mistake with my pantry was canning dozens of jars of something new. I’m STILL trying to get through the tomatillo salsa I canned when I first started. Started with 12 pints and I’m down to 3. I’ve given some away, used some in other dishes, but I just didn’t like it! So now, if it’s a new recipe to me, I only make 1/2 batch to try it.

      Yes, I've done that before, too. I think it was with baked beans. Only 4 people in our family care for them, and it took quite some time to go through them all 😂

    We like spam. Fry it up and add to a charcuterie. Or fry up and offer as topping to salad eggs or wraps.

    Great video. My mistake was to build my food storage with mostly perishable items that could only be kept in freezers and nothing shelf stable...

    • @rockymountainhomesteadangela
      @rockymountainhomesteadangela  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I feel that way with how stocked my freezers are with meats. I am working on pressure canning a lot and turning them into meals for the pantry. 🌻

  • @JanalynVoigt
    @JanalynVoigt 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Good advice. Stocking up is one thing, managing your food storage is another. My beggest mistake was to lose track of the food in our freezers. I'm going through now and making freezer lists. Nothing will go in without being added to a list, and nothing will come out without my crossing it off. Some folks make pantry lists, too. I label where all my staples go so my family can put things away where they go, and I can tell at a glance when something is getting low.

    • @rockymountainhomesteadangela
      @rockymountainhomesteadangela  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes! My freezers are my most neglected area. I have some containers I purchased to try to bring some order to them. That is one area I have to do inventory on and stay on top of! Sounds like you have a great system in place!

  • @debbiealtman5373

    It takes time to label stuff with BBD but it’s worth it because you can see if some got push to the back and needs to be pulled up and used first.
    Freezers need to be rotated through as well,
    We e had mice. And finally got rid of them. Sticky traps and a few pieces of dog food. Mice like the dog food too.
    Great advice.
    Bruce lost his job and we had a food pantry but not as big as we have now and survived 4 months . A few yrs ago so I get it,😊

      YES!! Freezers are so easy to neglect. They definitely aren't frequented as often as our pantries.

      @@rockymountainhomesteadangela yes freezers are forgotten about sometimes. I mark all my food with BBD so that way it’s insurance if something gets pushed towards the back. It takes a minute to mark all food but it’s worth it.

    I don’t can foods we don’t like. We rotate. Also DO NOT stack jars on each other! We instead back off the ring by a turn then can stack jars as the ring’s not on the seal. False seals are deadly. We also have a spreadsheet of our pantry goods. We have too much but it’s worth it.

    One big mistake I've seen: Buying bulk sized items that have to be refrigerated after opening. Smaller items are better if you don't have power.

    Thank you very helpful info. I only have a pantry cupboard in my kitchen so things get pushed to the back so I have to once in awhile go in and reorganize it. I do the dates with a sharpie as well.🙂

      Thank you for watching! Pantry cupboards are difficult because they're usually deeper, and things definitely get pushed to the back easily.

    Don't throw out the spam. You may have an aversion to it because of your childhood but don't pass that on to your kids. If slicing and frying is not okay, find creative ways to mix it in other foods. Meat sauce...half sausage, half spam....meatballs....biscuit gravy, half and half again...meatloaf. Spam is not a regular go to for me either, but I have cans on the shelf. We have no idea the extent of what's ahead of us. Blessings.

      When I was a child, an aunt used to make Spam salad sandwiches - it's the only way I like it, but I'd sure eat a Spam salad sandwich if I were hungry some day!

    How do you start a pantry if you don’t have a homestead or garden? What do you recommend for one person who is 72 with some health issues? Vegetables are so expensive so I buy frozen instead of canned.

      When I was starting, I watched the sales for a good deal on canned/jarred food that I like and picked up an extra or two within my food budget. I didn't have the ability to can or grow a garden at the time, but within 6 months I had a small supply of spaghetti sauce, canned corn and green beans, peanut butter, etc. When I was able, I bought some buckets with gamma lids so I could buy some stuff in bulk - oatmeal, rice, stuff like that. In fact, my first couple of buckets were Christmas gifts! The gamma lids cost a bit, but my hands can't handle the regular lids.
