"Anonymous may well tear itself apart in a fight over whether or not having ideals violates their ideals." Quite possibly the most hilarious sentence about Anonymous I've ever heard of.
Beeing anonymous means beeing an individual equal as the others, not meaning that you don't have anything (values) but that everyone is free, to believe and to roam (space, information) without hurting other individuals since they're free too. That may have come wierd.
There's actually a really easy way to tell that this wasn't Anon - or at least not "officially Anonymous," whatever that means. It wasn't announced. Almost all of Anon's actions are preceded by a message. "We're going to hack these people, because they did this thing." There may be exceptions, but for the most part their intentions are declared beforehand. Also, it clearly wasn't a vetted decision. As you noted, many Anons are probably gamers, so if the idea of hacking Sony was floated around Reddit, most Anons would have voted: "Hell no!" Technically any person can be Anonymous, but an "Anonymous Action," by definition, is decided by the community, not any one individual. They may not be a specific entity, but they do have specific procedures.
Let me explain the concept "Anonymous" for people who don't understand. It's not a council of hackers sitting in a circle discussing who to attack. It's a random guy saying "we should do this" anonymously online (usually on /b/) and people with skills will respond "sounds cool i want to help" then they go do it. Each 'Attack' isnt the same 5 people, it's a new group of random people who met in a thread, which attracts more supporters when they hear of it.
I see one comment on top of the other here, and it's really funny: Comment 1. (5 months ago): Anonymous has declared war on ISIS. Comment 2. (4 months ago): anonymous died
what pisses me off is that they assumed that by "anonymous", they thought they meant the group Thats fucking stupid, anonymous is a term used to not give out your name.
A friend of mine was worried that his home server was compromised due to the fact it had an "anonymous" account on it (FTP). I had to explain the real meaning of the word "anonymous" in order for him to calm down. With this in mind, I'm kinda worried. The word "anonymous" are about to have it's true meaning corrupted. Not because of the group "Anonymous", but by the stupidity of the common people.
Anonymous is a network, not an organisation. Blaming Anonymous for the actions of a handful of people is as stupid as blaming the entire user base of Facebook for the actions of a handful of Facebook users. Even if said group claims to be acting on behalf of the network doesn't make it so.
Edithae which is why the FBI haven't knocked down your front door for browsing 4chan. Obviously nobody thinks that the entirety of the collective known as anonymous is responsible; that would be ridiculous.

YoshiFace and in any case, who cares if it's politically correct? In Nazi Germany egalitarianism wasn't politically correct. Long story short, Anonymity is one of the things that gives Anonymous so much power. The fact that so many people can "join" anonymous and "leave" anonymous at a rate that's impossible to track makes it a force to be reckoned with.
So then anonymous isn't anyone, just anyone who hacks for the Anonymous organization's ideals. Meaning that since hacking Sony isn't being productive towards the Anonymous organization's ideals, Anonymous didn't hack it. Which I guess means that people can't actually be part of Anonymous, but instead actions and ideas are part of Anonymous. So instead of people saying they're part of Anonymous, they should be saying that their actions and ideals (or some of their actions and ideals) are Anonymous actions and ideals.
0:36 - 1:06 I can't help but laugh at this part in the light of their recent statement about GG. They pretty much committed the exact fallacy they had spent this entire video debunking.
Even if the money is for updates, it's an ass thing to do. At least make multiplayer free. All the other stuff you get with Gold isn't enough to make people buy it? Even F2Ps need Gold to be able to play. I tried playing Smite on my Xbox and it tells me I need Gold. You know how much of a middle finger that is? I
+ShakeFan14 they have no incentive to do it every incentive to keep charging for it, especially now that PSN also charges for online multi. Companies are driven by incentive, not by what's cool or what's an ass thing to do. They don't really care about that stuff. They care about profit and sustained profit and that's it.
following the mental train of the phrase "do having ideals violate their ideals?" just made my brain figuratively short-circuit for a second, before i had to stop thinking about it. it's like one of those weird paradox phrases like "this statement is false."
chbrules And having an Internet connection, a slightly above-average knowledge of computers and a lot of free time is not license to infringe on other people's rights. Anonymous punishes those who are "against free speech" by taking said freedoms away from others, often to the detriment of the very people they were supposedly trying to protect.
chbrules I should clear something up a bit: I am not against anything in particular that Anonymous ostensibly stands for. I am all for net neutrality, free speech, and all that good stuff. I am against the methods they use to "enforce" said values. Values are not a thing you enforce. You don't ruin someone's ability to provide for their family because you don't like something they said, or you don't like what they stand for. You don't crash websites provided at no cost to the public for necessary services (like reporting a crime) just because you don't like how an agency does things. You use ideas, not virtual vandalism. You use words, not packets. You use tolerance, not anger. And most of all, you don't punish the everyman for the actions, thoughts, and beliefs of a completely separate group of people. All the public face of Anonymous does is piss people off. And I make that distinction in "public face". I would wager that the vast majority of what makes up the actual group referred to as "Anonymous" actually feel the way I do. I would bet that they think that the script kiddies who vandalize websites and spoof numbers to call in SWAT raids on people are detrimental to the movement, and that the image of "anti-social 1337-h4x0r living in mommy's basement" is, at best, wrong and, at worst, legitimately insulting. I am not a member of Anonymous. But I refuse to believe that anyone who really believes in free speech would do the disgusting, oppressive, morally-bankrupt things that people do supposedly in the name of Anonymous.
+Christopher Pilcher Maybe I am just not fully understanding what you are trying to say, but when you say "Use ideas, not virtual vandalism", it just doesn't make sense. An idea is nothing until it is materialized by action. The way I see it, anonymous is taking said actions while doing the least possible amount of damage. If you disagree, then please tell me how you attack a corrupt establishment without causing any collateral damage at all? Maybe I'm just simply retarded and the answer to this is easy, but I cannot think of any way to expose and destroy bullshit and corruption in a system without causing any form of harmful ripple effect. Compared to those who think killing the corrupt people or blowing up buildings to destroy a corrupt establishment, anonymous is doing fairly little damage. Unless someone comes up with a better method, I'm gonna have to side with anonymous on this.
Judging by their recent attacks, Anonymous does have ideals, most of which I can get behind. I hope they can get themselves together better so they can live up to their full potential for good. Thanks for this.
A gamer Really? once on the radio, They were talking about Anonymous' threats against ISIS, and one person called them, and asked if it's the same group that hacked the PSN. They're mysterious, they don't have physical presence, but exist only via the internet. Those alone make it easy to blame them for anything.
Well, I can't totally disagree with you. being a vigilante always comes at a price. However, i dont think they expect any kind of recognition from the people. they just do what they think is right... and they're never wrong
the second they do that, they'll be a million times easier to pin down. The fact that every single one of them can be a temporary leader at any point, or give ideas and act upon things of their own accord is the key to their strength.
I have a few question's for you. How do I write for Games? Is it the same as writing for a book or show? Are there any guidelines I should be looking at?
Just go to their page and look at the playlist with all the videos, but if you really wanna just kinda dive right in check out www.codecademy.com I suggest starting off with HTML CSS Javascript and JQuery if you have no prior programming experience.
+antimezz11 Actually HTML, CSS, Javascript etc are not really that good starting points if someone wants to make games. I would say download unity3d.com/get-unity and just start playing around.
the thing about anonymous, is that it started on 4chan. the same place cicada3011 started. for all we know, anonymous could be a underground goverment movement to remove trust in them, just to take themselves over.
jusk being dishonest with the intention to protect. Kind of like how "they" put scary music and up the visuals on organ dissection so tobacco addicts think tobacco is bad. Don't worry, I think you have to believe in all the conspiracies to be a conspiracy nut, I however only believe in one.
And in the end, what destroyed Anonymous was ironically the same thing that was seemingly making them invincible. Anyone could be an anon without submitting to a hierarchic backbone that would destroy the whole group when taken down, but that also means that when Anonymous became infamous enough, it attracted more and more clueless kiddies who wanted to belong to the group, but actually just took the name and the mask and started campaigning for their own ideals. As soon as it became too popular, the name and the image of Anonymous was used for anything. Some kind of splinters of Anonymous were now fighting for all kinds of social justice stuff that Anonymous was never actually about, Guy Fawkes masks started to be common on every kind of protest or strike. The mini-culture of Anonymous was so skewed and shat upon that the core 4chan anons already mock that same image that they themselves created for years now.
Totally agree, ANY computer network that is somehow connected to the internet CAN be broken into; it may take more time and resources to crack one instead of another, but it is still undeniably possible.
Really old by now but a few months ago Sony got hacked, the hackers took credit card information from users and shut down the servers for a few days I think
Putting aside if it was or was not Anonymous for a moment. I want to talk about them. The fact that they are- for the most part- an unorganized organization is counterproductive. They can be anyone but that easily can be one of their biggest faults. In a group with no real order but simply following an idea the whole purpose behind them can be easily corrupted. Turn them into something different, they walk a thin line as it is. Committing criminal activity on the Internet is a slippery slope and I'm concerned about that. It's truly a sort of illuminati sort of issue if something like that happens or is happening. If it is the group you can't very well stop Anonymous because that is simply what they are "anonymous" they are anyone and everyone will no true leader and a focused but disorganized group you wouldn't catch them. God help us all if that ever happens
"Anonymous" is not a group or an organization. Script kiddies who feel like identifying themselves with some xX Hacker group say that it is. Anonymous is really just random anons from 4chan, who sometimes organize themselves in a small group to do a sorta organized attack. And whenever they end up doing an attack on anything, it is organized, IRC's, Tor websites and whatnot. But either way Anonymous isn't an organization in any way.
Fucкing James they only have a channel for news and stuff which someone more known from anonymous probably made anoymous are kind of like a legion of stray ants, sometimes they hear bad news and get together to stop it, then go about their daily lives until something interesting happens again
If I were hacking and I did something really powerful but I did it solo, I'd have to create a cryptic "Follow this crumb trail to another crumb trail that leads to a very confusing series of clues that HINTS at who I am"... and have a fresh one for each job.
"Seriously, check out her REAL artwork if you haven't already. (Links below)" No links below. =| Easy enough to find with just Googling her name though.
Actually reminds of a lot of an anime/ light novel called durarara!! In where one of the characters (I won't say who as that would be spoilers) must deal with their anonymous organisation spiraling out of control because of it's anonymous nature. Early on in the show the positives that the organisation could do are shown, but scapegoating starts ruining the organisation. Seems pretty interesting how close these 2 things are.
They lost millions so they could point some traffic towards Anonymous? If anything it added more members to it too, sounds like a lose-lose outcome for them for something that wasn't a provocative threat in the first place.
Hold on, I'm a punker AND watch Fox News I like damn near all punkers from the 80's are conservatives. (look up Johnny Ramone's politics). We believe in VERY limited govt. the right to keep what you earn and that charity is an act of religion and should not be allowed by any govt. I worked with hundreds of artist, music and visual and a vast majority of them were very 'right-wing' In viewing another video 'What is a Gamer' you have taken the role of the prejudicial type by associating an art form with a political paradigm. When in fact, quite the opposite is true. Perhaps a little more self-examination, and a lot less stereotyping. :)
Isn't conservatism about maintaining or reverting back to tradition? Aren't some of those traditions authoritative? Charity can also be a secular act, since it can be performed and organized by atheists without conflicting with their lack of belief in a deity. Religion can be non-authoritative when individuals are not stuck with interpretations by a clergyman/pope, but are seeking their own answers. "Right/left" are ambiguous terms and should rightly be contained in quotations marks. It's possible to be a punker and support anarcho-syndicalism, anarcho-capitalism, anarcho-anything. I'm assuming America still has the two party system, which would explain the confusion and false associations.
TonyTheAnything It's also compounded that in the last century the two parties swapped ideals. The 'small government' was the democrats, but have since become the conservatives.
You're gonna have to develop that statement that "nearly all punks from the 80's are conservatives." using a bit more than just Johnny Ramone as an example (Johnny's ideas were never really popular with the rest of the band btw, especially not Dee Dee.) I know some of them turned that way, I give you that. Emphasis on "some." They are the exception. The true punks, those that didn't turn into rock stars... it's another story. Plus, Dead Kennedys. One of the major punk bands of the 80s. Can't get more left wing than Jello Biaffra.
This was one of the Extra Credits episodes that, at the time, really did not understand the issue. I seem to recall that The Escapist (where EC was located back then) as a whole misundestood Anonymous and the whole issue with them. A lot of people were talking about the "leadership of the Anonymous" or their agenda, or what have you, which was silly if you actually understood it.
I also agree with the your views of the potential downfall of anonymous. When i heard that some anonymous members were arrested, i asked some anonymous members what they though of these arrested anonymous. They stated that they were "faker' or fake anons. It seemed to me that they dint have a name to call them or a way to identify the difference between a real anon and a fake one. I also dont agree with anonymous being able to do anything signifigant, they seem to me as a publicity machine.
You know that whole thing about anyone claiming to be part of anonymous are just that is semi-correct because within this gaint bubble called anonymous you have smaller bubbles that operates on their own, meaning that while some people say "Oh it wasn't anonymous that did this" they're just speaking for their own bigger bubble.
That's a fair question, deserves an answer. Arguments can start when something defends the absurd, the unrealistic or the insane. Its not worth winning an argument over something like that because its not worth wasting the time participating in one. In short, trying to prove someone wrong on TH-cam often only amounts to wasting a fraction of your life. Exceptions to this are possible, but rare. I mistakenly thought pointing out enough evidence to the contrary would prevent an argument.
another thing they could do is maybe fight against the US Gov. for saying that net neutrality is not required of companies. this would be standing up for their ideals of unregulated internet.
from what i know, anonymous is an idea of others not knowing who you are. as such, as long as your identity is hidden, you could be considered anonymous. it is not a group, but simply any amount of random individuals with hidden identities. and the very moment their identity is exposed, they cease to be anonymous.
The group Anonymous has a specific set of ideals. The man who hacked that forum, unless it had done something against Anonymous ideals, this was just someone trolling, and hiding behind Anonymous's reputation as hackers to get away, similarly to the Sony case.
The more you think about anonymous the more it seems like Robin Hood, I mean, honestly, where in life, other than on the web can one truly be anonymous in any way? It seems amazing that people still stand up for what they think is right, and that there is a away to truly be no one.
Watching this now makes me sad over the whole Russian hacking debacle. How both organizations seemed to leave a "clue" leading to them. A clue which makes no sense that they would ever leave.
While anyone can be in Anonymous, just because they were in Anonymous, doesn't mean they are hackers. Anonymous has a group called Lulzsec that has all the hackers for Anonymous and its not an open party, there are actually hacker competitions that one of my friends went to and Lulzsec was there recruiting people who are good at hacking and recruiting them.

Judging by their recent attacks, Anonymous does have ideals, most of which I can get behind. I hope they can get themselves together better so they can live up to their full potential for good. Thanks for this.
I hear mild distortion on your voice, and it seems a little high pitch. Do you use voice altering software?
+Matthew Smith Aye, in all of the main channel videos Dan's voice is made higher.
Whether or not Anonymous did it or not, the fact remains that their reputation in the public eye has been destroyed.
+Jimmy William not really
A gamer Really? once on the radio, They were talking about Anonymous' threats against ISIS, and one person called them, and asked if it's the same group that hacked the PSN. They're mysterious, they don't have physical presence, but exist only via the internet. Those alone make it easy to blame them for anything.
Well, I can't totally disagree with you. being a vigilante always comes at a price. However, i dont think they expect any kind of recognition from the people. they just do what they think is right... and they're never wrong
A gamer I never said they were evil, but that their reputation has preceded them, even though it's untrue.
It's not their fault. It's our MSM who are truly responsible for it, right?
Well, four years later and they're still here... and let's hope they continue to exist
yeah, and thanks to that hillary losted.
anonymous was behind the wiki leaks scandal spreading.
the second they do that, they'll be a million times easier to pin down. The fact that every single one of them can be a temporary leader at any point, or give ideas and act upon things of their own accord is the key to their strength.
i believe in all of those things but I'm no judge or executioner to who breaks those ideals like anonymous thinks they are
I have a few question's for you.
How do I write for Games?
Is it the same as writing for a book or show?
Are there any guidelines I should be looking at?
+antimezz11 They have done quite a few videos on this topic.
Justin Anderson
Oh Really, Guess I should just look,
*Eleven Seasons*
Or not?
Just go to their page and look at the playlist with all the videos, but if you really wanna just kinda dive right in check out www.codecademy.com I suggest starting off with HTML CSS Javascript and JQuery if you have no prior programming experience.
Justin Anderson
Oh, ok.
+antimezz11 Actually HTML, CSS, Javascript etc are not really that good starting points if someone wants to make games. I would say download unity3d.com/get-unity and just start playing around.
What if a government agency took down PSN, to turn gamers away from anonymous?
***** Snowden says hi.
the thing about anonymous, is that it started on 4chan. the same place cicada3011 started. for all we know, anonymous could be a underground goverment movement to remove trust in them, just to take themselves over.
my head exploded
What if government agents dress up as addicts so that people would think drugs are bad?
jusk being dishonest with the intention to protect.
Kind of like how "they" put scary music and up the visuals on organ dissection so tobacco addicts think tobacco is bad.
Don't worry, I think you have to believe in all the conspiracies to be a conspiracy nut, I however only believe in one.
Im glad you're reasonable human beings. i was expecting this episode to be about reasons it WAS WITHOUT DOUBT them. i was pleasantly surprised.
Totally agree, ANY computer network that is somehow connected to the internet CAN be broken into; it may take more time and resources to crack one instead of another, but it is still undeniably possible.
wait wait wait. i live in a cave. so what is this stuff about psn being attacked? explaination pls
Really old by now but a few months ago Sony got hacked, the hackers took credit card information from users and shut down the servers for a few days I think
Your such an idiot.
You live in a house not a cave.
A few months? it's been well over 4 years since this particular attack.
Don't you have internet in that cave? Damn you such a prehistoric man...
"Hi, I just hacked your system, here's my name and address."
Seriously Sony...
this video is a bit weird few year laters.
You got any search material for this "Expect us!!!!! Nov. 5th 2013" ? I've not heard much about Anonymous lately, and I look forward to this!
They don't have leadership but they have a verified ANONYMOUS youtube channel? The fuck?
Fucкing James they only have a channel for news and stuff
which someone more known from anonymous probably made
anoymous are kind of like a legion of stray ants, sometimes they hear bad news and get together to stop it, then go about their daily lives until something interesting happens again
(Links below)"
No links below. =| Easy enough to find with just Googling her name though.
"...whether or not having ideals violates their ideals". Danny boy, you just broke my brain.
I enjoyed the puppet show, MOAR
At the end it says to check the links below to Allison's artwork, but I don't see the link.
Anonymous - Shut up mom I'm trying to DDoS this site with my big boy squad!
I agree with annoymous' ideals. but not always with their exacution.
Great video.
The best definition of anonymous i have seen.
You have forearms!
these are brillant videos. thank you for that!
Good Puppet work, I must say.
Where's the Allison art link? =< I know this is ported from escapist, but I've seen links here before..
In my opinion, the April 2011 PSN outage was a false flag by Sony to bash anonymous.
They lost millions so they could point some traffic towards Anonymous? If anything it added more members to it too, sounds like a lose-lose outcome for them for something that wasn't a provocative threat in the first place.
Calum Mccabe But wasnt the PSN attack Lulzsec? A pretty destructive hacker group. I thought this video was refering to the more recent PSN attack.
The best definition of Anonymous is the actual definition of the word Anonymous.
Anoymous vs isis *anoymous blows up cars with hacked goverment airdrones* ANOYMOUS WINS
If you commit a crime dont use a scapegoat. Own you actions and accept your consequences.
Hold on, I'm a punker AND watch Fox News I like damn near all punkers from the 80's are conservatives. (look up Johnny Ramone's politics). We believe in VERY limited govt. the right to keep what you earn and that charity is an act of religion and should not be allowed by any govt. I worked with hundreds of artist, music and visual and a vast majority of them were very 'right-wing'
In viewing another video 'What is a Gamer' you have taken the role of the prejudicial type by associating an art form with a political paradigm.
TonyTheAnything
It's also compounded that in the last century the two parties swapped ideals.
There is no link for Allisons art below :-(
I also agree with the your views of the potential downfall of anonymous.
Are there any updates on this? Im to lazy to do research
Wow nice nutral view guys. Very fair and equal to both sides. I respect this video.
The odd thing is how quiet they have been in the year since the attacks.
any day now there's going to be a story about anonymous and the fcc
2:34 if it was personal info in general then we would be screwed
may need to come back to this topic too with the current events.
The video was made 2 years ago.
I mistakenly thought pointing out enough evidence to the contrary would prevent an argument.
another thing they could do is maybe fight against the US Gov. for saying that net neutrality is not required of companies. this would be standing up for their ideals of unregulated internet.
these episodes have been aired long ago on the escapist. they're just catching their youtube channel up now that they're on patv.
Seeing as how Anonymous is suffering right now, they could create a protocol that says "If it is required, a leader will be chosen."
Thank you guys for telling us to check out Allison's artwork, but not telling us where to look. Really appreciate it.
hey, there's no link to alisons art in the distription!
yo anon, thanks with the help with westboro. i love you for that.
where are the links for the art? :P
from what i know, anonymous is an idea of others not knowing who you are. as such, as long as your identity is hidden, you could be considered anonymous. it is not a group, but simply any amount of random individuals with hidden identities. and the very moment their identity is exposed, they cease to be anonymous.
The group Anonymous has a specific set of ideals. The man who hacked that forum, unless it had done something against Anonymous ideals, this was just someone trolling, and hiding behind Anonymous's reputation as hackers to get away, similarly to the Sony case.
Yes, it happens every once in a while. These are the videos that were posted on The Escapist before they left.
So in 2017, what happened to anonymous, I haven't heard anything about them in years now
It was a student from the University of Advancing Technology in Arizona.
Oh wait, *that* Anonymous xD. Was thinking that we would be talking about anonymity general, but this is interesting too.
