I had a childhood friend in London with the anglicised Sophia pronunciation and when I heard this song coming over the speakers at HMV Oxford St (must have been 05/06), I stopped what I was doing and listened because it was so unusual to hear fy-ah rather than fee-ah. It immediately prompted me to think about the friend with whom I’d lost touch not long after adolescence. And of course the song was so poignant and beautiful. And that’s how I became a fan.
I thought "I'm not in Love" intro on those same chords.. Sophia is a beautiful song - the vocal/keys version has a very warm feel
Story time! When I was 15 in 2009, I went nuts learning about my name, Sophia. This song came up in my search, I listened to it, and then dropped researching my name and started listening to everything Nerina (or you, on the off chance you’re reading this) had ever made. Half of my life has been spent being a fan of this song and basically every album and collab (thank you for introducing me to Sandy! It’s thanks to you I’m now fluent in Portuguese).
You should do a guitar version sometime, because that bit you just played around 1:46 sounded beautiful! ♥
That's like the intro to 'All Good People' !
A really beautiful song, has been known to make water come out my eyes❤
Really enjoying this series.
Sophia is to you what Blue is to Joni Mitchell. It's been brilliant.
Absolutely fascinating, love Sophia and so interesting to hear about its development, the fact it started on guitar, the Wichita Lineman reference, the inspiration behind the lyrics, and the fact of it taking the time it did to develop. I hope this isn't the lady episode as there are many others i'd love to hear about, It Starts, Idaho, Buckminster Fuller, Mr King, Everything's Illuminated, Learning To Breathe, Real Late Starter.. When Did I Become Such a B*tch, to name a few!
I have loved this song since the dawn of time. X
Anotheŕ fantastic episode of a beautiful song .
Wuthering heights is the greatest song ever written according to my ears .
Thank you so much for doing Sophia. This was the first song I ever played to my now husband a few weeks after we got together. We had it played as I walked down the aisle too. I always like to think of songs as stories if I can, and some of your descriptions of lyric origin really help picture the song. Looking forward to next week!
This was the song for me that turned me on to Nerina and into a life long fan. I love the Glen Campbell reference as I am a huge fan of Wichita Lineman.
Easily in my top 10 songs of all time and Nerina you look stunning
An incredibly beautiful song, which has a habit of generating a tear at every listen, together with another fascinating story. Wichita Lineman is also one of my absolute favourites.
Congrats on scaling Ben Nevis!
Sophia's Choice :)
Beautiful song! Also the song that was the first one to bring your music to my attention. I remember hearing it on my local radio station, and despite the name Sophia featuring prominently in the lyrics, the DJ back announced it with the wrong pronunciation, so obviously he was not listening to it. His loss, I suppose.
Oh ! Nerina must say this series is fucking wonderful 👏
Kensal Rise ! I was born in Ladbroke Grove ,we could have been neighbours.
Oh ! And yes, "Angels" by Rob is one of the most annoying tunes.
Enjoy the climb and come back alive ❤
Great song and loving the back stories in all these videos . Thank you
Love these, N!
Thanks for your amazing music! 🎉
I’m loving Sophia instead (of Angels). Didn’t I hear you say you wanted Dancing Queen at your funeral?! 💃🏼👸🏼
Loving the pun ...brilliant ❤
