can be very annoying being an ISTP... when you can do many things and sadly is surrounded by people who love to depend on you TOO MUCH. 0-0 i feel restrained to learn new things and help others because when they know i can do this and that stuff, they put all work on me and subtly breathe down on my neck with "you can do it better/you know how to do it" and then expect me to always do them the favor. 0-0 like... you know... i can teach you how it's done so you don't have to call me every time you encounter the same problem. 0-0
Yes. As I've gotten older, I've learned to started distancing myself from those types of people. Often times, they'll simply take advantage of you, and sadly, since we love it when we're useful to other people, it can become a incredibly taxing. Its a problem, with one clear solution, to simply walk away. It is what it is.

@@Julia_Berrrlin Its more about walking away from poor relationships rather than walking away from everything in general. I left the Corporate world in 2016 and went back to field work, working for a small mom and pop. Never been happier. I've been treated as a human being and not just a number for 4 years, working for them. Its a much better working relationship. Same with personal relationships. If Im not getting paid something back for my efforts, I move towards something else. Clarified?

ISTP here: As far as my technical skills go, I've rebuilt my car's transmission, rewired my engine harness, opened up my video game consoles to clean them, disassembled my laptop many times to swap various parts, and I work as a paramedic.
I've always hated depending on others, even down to the simplest things such as a restaurant cleaning my table after I finish eating (I tend to clean my table and carry my tray back to the counter).
I know for a fact that I can teach, but I hate to do so because if the other side does not understand immediately I tend to lose my temper lol.
I also like teaching, but the reason I don't is I can't deal with the formal education system. Would kill me to have to tick all their boxes. Edit: Also, respect for the skills. You're doing great.

Ayy rebuilt my engine, power steering and brakes.
I sympathise greatly with the first paragraph (I'm not a paramedic though, I'm a Test Engineer). The 2nd not so much. People are being paid to clean my table so why should I waste my time doing menial jobs? I leave those to low skilled workers.
I'm an ISTP and I do everything myself. I do all of my own car, house and computer maintenance and never pay anyone to do anything I can do myself or figure out how to do. I can pretty much do anything. I'm also very much into anything to do with science, psychology, philosophy, spirituality and politics.

@@patriciaeddishaw9244 Really? I'm grateful I figured this out pretty early. Leaving low skilled and repetitive work to others gives me more time to pursue new skills or development. And by this I mean shit I don't like to do like house cleaning, gardening work etc.

Ah so I'm not the only ISTP into psychology. I wanna see if u like this subject for my same reason: Personally I see psychology as engineering of the mind, I see the mind as a machine and through psychology I can understand its mechanisms, with great knowledge of psychology I think I could have much more control over myself and my thoughts and be more productive so that I can become the best person I can be!
One downside with being an ISTP is we hate working with other people. Team sports are a no no

True, but it doesn't mean we can't be good team players, at least in my case. (In some situations and with specific people)
God I hated team sports. But once I found martial arts I realised that im not that bad at sports. Also I kinda enjoy playing team based esports.
I wouldn't say team sports are a no no, but I have found I tend to like the individual sports more such as martial arts.
There is nothing more frustrating than your teammate not learning from there mistake, I get headaches when that happen. (esports). I personally just play chess as I like to think.
As an ISTP, I appreciated your advice to learn how to learn. I realized that the reason why I struggled in certain topics growing up was because I was not taught properly and I didn’t understand how to learn. Once you learn how to learn and how to learn in ways that are best for you, you can tackle anything.

If people werent so annoyingly stuck with stereotypes, it would'nt be that exhausting... ISTP girls are too cool for school, i find, and some people are very uncomfortable with that
I feel like the actual number will be higher if girls aren’t raised to suppress that side of us to fit in or to avoid attention. I typed myself as istj in school/college bc i was following the rules and doing all the work diligently. I wasn’t happy being myself back then. Now I’m much happier. I don’t care what % istp has but I think there shouldn’t be a huge difference in % by gender for any type without unhealthy social construct.

doing a PhD in computer science is really a struggle. I enjoy taking new projects but struggle to finish them. I worked in a company before, where the projects were half a year long and that was cool. as an ISTP, I'd say we can be good programmers only in a vivid environment.
I assembled my furniture, light and painted the walls alone. It looks shitty but I'm proud to be independent.
This is really good advice for young ISTPs to be honest, I think for me realizing this took more time then I would care to admit. I spent most of my teens and 20s just absorbed in learning about everything from computers to cars to plumbing and I originally did it just to have a good time. It wasn't until people started coming to me for help that the lightbulb finally turned on... "you know...I could start charging people for my help..." /hits forehead, DUH!
I feel you on that. The past 15 years I've been immersed in marketing and getting so good that I can just about solve any situation on the fly. Now I've gotta show folks the dissassemble the complex
Knew a young master mechanic. He used to try explaining that fixing cars was inherently the same as fixing anything else. All I know is some have the gift.
ISTP here: built 2 houses without any previous experience, do all my own vehicle repairs, love electronics, built all my own computers, will have a go at anything and avoid reliance on anyone else. I'm a loner and recluse which others find strange, but that's okay
1 - I cannot tell you how much it galls me that "samurai warrior" (or equivalent) isn't an option.
2 - The only time I really feel any sort of satisfaction at work is when I am sought out specifically, either to solve a problem or to teach someone a skill.

I’m an ISTP and I have yet to meet another in my profession (I’m sure there are others, but we seem to be few and far between)- I’m an assistant manager at a retailer, specializing in loss prevention and security. I did a decent job as an “undercover shopper”, but surprisingly, my strongest skill set is in internal theft investigations. It seems like an unconventional thing to be so attracted to as this type, but it’s easier when you understand how much troubleshooting is really involved in identifying and resolving cases, and how far you can get by understanding your resources and knowing how to piece things together. ISTPs, don’t think your preference of sensing over intuition makes you ineffective as an investigator!

Efficiency and effectiveness-Such an ISTP thing! My sister Jasmine is always trying to teach me the basics in every aspect of her expertise (piano, makeup, hair, cooking). I’ve been trying to make myself as independent as possible my whole life 😂 still need to figure out how to fix my car on my own. My Dad could have taught me that. I think I wanted to be taught more skills as a kid.
I think it’s pretty natural for ISTPs to collect skills. Right now I need the skill of not being overwhelmed when I have a lot to do at one time at work. I really just try to put my head down and try to think of no more than three things in advance. If something happens that stops my well oiled machine type way of going about things (which happens all the time) I get overwhelmed.

Jess, my dad tried to teach me, but I would just stand there nodding my head while thinking about something else. Anyway, I've learned that I would rather diagnose my car problems; the actual hands-on work is a high testosterone activity in my opinion.
hi i was wondering if failure to launch syndrome only occurs with ESPs, would ISPs possibly be susceptible to it? Just because i heard it’s always ESPs. Just wondering... i’m mainly talking bout estps and istps :D
@@zyxorgun ISTPs are not like that. They generally want to get out on their own and be their own boss and do their own thing. I know you aren't talking about ISFPs, but I've known a couple that were slow to leave the nest.
Narcs in Art I really don’t know any SPs that have failure to launch syndrome. But consider the people I’m surrounded with not only left home but maybe moved very far away from home (sometimes leaving the country they were born in) to peruse their career/dreams. So I feel like my own experiences are super biased.
Se doms usually want to go out and do their own thing too, but I can see how living in your parents basement may facilitate that depending on your situation, lol.

I think ISTP:s probably made the best hunters in the hunter/gatherer society due to Ti/Se/Ni. ESTP:s would be good at this as well.
But they are also really bad at taking orders from others (they really hate being told what to do) as well as being leaders (they don`t want to tell others what to do, just helping them occasionally), so living in a tribe must be really difficult for them, even if they had good survival skills

When I decide to learn something new, I always try to understand some kind of basis from it, find the repeating patterns, basic functions. From that point, to learn faster or more efficiently if you want, I cycle through other thing I already learnt that have similar patterns. Basically, the more you learn, the bigger your patterns bank is, the faster you learn in general! And when I find something really interesting to learn, ahhhhhhh it's so much fun, time stops existing, hunger disapears and it's only THAT thing lol

Have you heard of the 80/20 principle? It's a recurring pattern I think you'd like and find interesting.
It’s a good approach to learn piano with chords and scales. It’s been extremely helpful in my own piano learning to understand it as a system of interrelated patterns. But without songs to play, that process alone will be painfully boring.

The hundreds of skill books I have aquiered from online piracy is amazing. I started learning from them a few weeks ago. Gotta say I feel like OP anime MC.
Learn two skill but don’t be over ambitious lol 😂 as an istp if I pick up a hobby or skill next thing I know it 3am 4 days later and I haven’t slept but I can recount every aspect of every book written on said subject including the history and have done several experiments in it.... just starting a garden was a several day bender lol but here I am now with a massive garden, orchard, vineyard and berry patch... you know cuz I wanted to plant a tomato once
Over the course of the past 9 years I designed and built my 3000 sq ft house myself from scratch learning all the skills required as needed along the way. I finally am finishing up next week and I’ve often wondered if it was an insane feat. I just learned about this personality classification system. Does the idea of building your home yourself this way appeal to any of you other ISTPs, or is it really crazy? Lol
That is my full on dream! I'm 18 and starting off with a carpentry course, then I'll move onto plumbing and electrics until I have all the skills I need to be able to do that. It's nice to see (/read about) people at the end of timelines like the one I've planned for myself! Congrats!

I’ve always found personality types to be quite non-controversial since we describe people using traits and classifications all the time. This is just one particular way of formalising that. Suggesting programming as a career for restless fidgety ISTPs seems like a recipe for misery, the main things we need are variety and challenges to exercise our adaptability
istp here! i love self teaching. i‘m in high school, and was taught the basics of python there, but on my own i‘ve taken on two more coding languages. i try to do the same with instruments (bass, piano), languages and recently have found an interest in chemical engineering- all without school. to me this video seems both accurate and helpful to fellow istps. this habit of learning to learn has really granted me opportunities.

Fantastic advice! As an ISTP WTFyears leave you looming aimlessly, all it takes is to DEVOTE yourself to a skill (especially one aiding in self sufficiency) and things start falling into place. Don’t bother learning programming unless it really is that interesting, you starve your Se and your labor gets outsourced anyway. Start working out, pick up that guitar, and read that manual.
This guy has our best interest at heart. Thank you, from an istp. You know how to unpackage tips for us in order to absorb it in our own unique way.
I knew I was actually an ISTP when I would watch TH-cam videos to learn how to do things like rebuilding a transmission, but I’d always forget and end up forgetting everything the video said and just start taking things apart.
I thought I was an INTP but when I was a kid I’d take things apart without any intention of putting them back together. I just gotta get in there and see.

im not the pyhsical typed ISTP, i'm a coder. i have a very particular way of doing my job and when I put this on production it proves more efficient than the market's default. i choose frameworks and technologies not by popularity but for efficiency and productivity generally i'm a early adopter ... and I kinda love doing this. i do not pass on any interview don't have the fit for any corporation. so people call me when they need someone to make MVP's. i have a lot of imposter syndrome but recently I get astonished at how good I am even not being accepted on any interview, guess that freelancing, teaching and entrepreneurship is my thing.

It took me a long time to realize the best way to learn skills is to focus on a few at a time and give your all to it, rather than shoving as much info into every bit of time as possible. Learning this way is fighting against the way our brains was designed. Focus on one thing and hammer it down and repeat. Our whole lives we will be fighting the learning curve and learning is child’s play. Read a mind for numbers, it’s all about how to learn, and it’s basically what my friend said, start with the big picture, take it apart and put it back together. Good analogy’s are puzzles and brick laying, peace and love fam ✌️
I couldn't see programming as a career. I've seen the work life of many and if I am just going to die of boredom. The only times I prefer to learn programming is if there is something I want to do but that is usually a heap of passion that dies quickly.
Yes, the programming is waste to me, because it is just sitting in one place for a long time, that makes me bored.
I remember coming to my friends' appartment to fix their printer. It was the 1st time I dismantled any printer but I was able to fix it in 1 hours or 2. It was basically like I was adapting what I learned from fixing my cars to other stuff. Same with plumbing I fixed at my former appartment.
In the end, I think the skillset we try to learn doesn't really matter, the real important thing in my opinion is how to approach it. Understandig the role of the components or factors involved in every skill, to work on them one by one if we feel it is our weak point. Troubleshooting basically.

As a istp my motto is if the Crowd Goes North I go south and what I do for a living I specialize to the degree that I don't have to be dependent upon anyone simply because of my skill level I can go anywhere and make the prevailing wage !
Totally agree. I’m an ISTP and spent all my adulthood so far on things mentioned here, at the moment I feel like there’s nothing I wouldn’t be able to master and learning new skills becomes easier and quicker, with mindset trained this way there will be nothing holding you back. Now in my early 30’s I started noticing my Fe suffering a lot because of that but I guess it’s just a matter of shifting focus a bit and bringing a little bit more balance to the top 3 functions. Solid advice, it makes a lot of sense and also explains why I have almost always preferred learning things myself, cause then I get to skip all the non-essentials. I feel like ISTPs, we are the types to almost always toss out the manual first thing 😅 and then get down to business.
ISTP dental student here. I feel like dentistry isn’t something that comes up as a fitting career as an ISTP. Dentistry requires mastery of various hand instruments and continually evolving technologies and is a career that is both mentally and physically engaging. I think all ISTPs that are interested in healthcare should look into it. Engineering and software development are other careers that I could see myself doing. I’m learning how to code currently as a new hobby and I already find it addictive
The teaching thing you mentioned is very true. I do it all the time as a student to help me learn and I enjoy the positive feedback as well seeing as I’m not as socially inclined as I would like to be in most cases
oh yeah, and you know how to make things look good too. grind just the right amount off that long tooth.
As a female ISTP married to a male ENFJ, I'm the fixer and handyman. It used to really bother my husband, especially in our early marriage (we've been married 19 years). Now he just leans into it and I go to him when i have to address interpersonal situations and I don't want to come off as a jerk.
Learning and doing is my hobby. You give me a book or video and I can do almost anything.
For the most part fixing and building things bring me life, nothing compares to being in the zone building something with loud music playing
So i have the main three functions of an istp, but not the least usable function. And i have never heard anything more accurate. I was a well rounded child, and work well at everything of many different kinds of things of all subjects and categories. When ever tell people oh yea i can play violin, cook, dance, work with wood, i can draw, paint, fix electronics, garden, bind books, the list goes on. Some will say oh your just so naturaly good at everything, and im just like no there just easy. Breaking everything down to just the core parts of it then become an expert in those you can do anyrhing. I really like this video and i might take you up on your Challenge. I have to think of something new to learn tho. Maybe machine sewing and wood carving.
I am an ISTP and mastering one's launguage is a hard thing to do, and requires a lot of effort.
When I bought an electric guitar to learn myself playing, first thing I did was to open it up and shield it to avoid static noise.
When I bought a console first thing I did was to mod it even though I used soldering iron once before and it required soldering micro points on the motherboard. Did it and it worked.
When I had a car I was doing everything on it myself cause I didn't trust the mechanics to do a goos enough job 😂 It got to a point that I wanted to replace the clutch on the sidewalk but I could lift the car high enough to remove the transmission. So I sold the sucker just like that.
Was building PCs when it actually required some skills.
Learning how to learn is the best advice cause we're really frantic and get easily distracted by the new shiny thing. Lack of discipline is something I always struggled with.

I wrote a long message about my experience being an ISTP but deleted everything because it got too boring. To summarize, here is my approach to learning as an ISTP:

First year of hs I chose 3new electives: woods, comp prog, cyber. I've enjoyed woods the most so far-i freakin love it, I hate comp prog and cyber because we're js sitting on chairs for 2 periods and it's so tedious and slow. Woods on the other hand, is all about being hands on. With each thing I do I can physically see the change, feel it. All I can here is the thrum of machines. It's all here's the instructions, do it.

Learning to learn is pretty good advice. Learning things is actually my top skill.
I can pick up new things so quickly, that's why school always bored me. It's like "alright no one cares about all these details, how can I use this already?!?!"

Welding! As a female istp ive always wanted to work with my hands. Learning to weld is a dream of mine. And there is a huge need for it in industry jobs.
In my experience, people rarely desire to understand how something actually works. They just want shit fixed fast.
I love computers and hang around with them what i've Been doing most of My Life now. Solving problems is fun and also i've built all My PC's myself. Recently i picked to learn Greece and have a goal to visit and speak It and also picked another new hobby with a bit handy work with threads. So far this video is quite accurate.

I hate how I have to go through things myself to learn. I figured this out awhile ago but if I came across this video I wouldn't have taken it seriously at all.
I don't know about your (but) after saying programming is a good choice. I think this might be a very good reason why ISTPs probably will do well in it because of Introverted Intuition. It allows the ISTP to niche down into something knowing so much and so well that not many others around are able to solve the specific problem they are able to.
But yeah, definitely learning more than one skills is better and it's also fun to go through the process of knowing nothing to knowing more than everyone and maybe even innovating.

Istp checking in.. I am a plumber and I would say I am a master plumber I just don’t have a state license saying I am..and i use to be a industrial equipment mechanic.
I'm an ISTP who was an education major but had to switch out because I was going insane. Teacher programs are all about bloated standards and unnecessary learning systems

I'm an .. XSTP, and Commercial Trucking is the SHIIIIZ. Honestly. Unexpected, sure.. but it fires on so many levels. I'm traveling -> Getting those Se interactions that I don't necessarily intend on committing to XD. I'm makin cheddar cheeeeeese. Nerding out on the mechanics of it all. I'm a mastering Safe driving.. Showin fools how to slap trailers into slips in tight spaces like it aint no thang. Idk. It's firing on so many levels for me, and it doesnt feel like work at all. The only real bummer is Having to go to particular places too repetitively sometimes. But it's and adventure 100.. or.. 85%! Would I have preferred to be a UFC fighter? Yes. But these opportunities arise as well. Then to get back to my nest in TN.. kick it and reflect.. hell yeah

I played football for a good 8 years of my life the coaches never seen me as a starter but I had the motivation to go out and make a play. I wish they let me in often I would of been in the nfl

As an ENTP, ISTP's are my favourite partners in crime and fellow loners.. usually good at doing the 'things', however getting them to do my 'things' can be another story. They're super good hustlers/business men give space and time, however in the moment they can't outwitt me. Despite all the nonsense I spew with my big mouth they do take it on board. I can usually rely on their ego and cockiness to play predictably towards my own ends. We can be 100% earnest with ea other most of the time, despite ISTP's dubious nature. I feel like they're Eminem and I'm Slim Shady sometimes. They're equally as rebelious, irresponsible and manic as myself alot of the time too. IMO smarter than INTP more often than not. But when it comes to new things or people thats when they shy away and I lure them into the chaos. Funnily enough they will probably continue with those things or people well after I'm done.

ISTP here. I love teaching, but more one on one with motivated students. I have taught most of the stringed instruments and latin. I am slowly picking up piano by working my way through a hymnal and just picking songs I like. Next up, sewing. I already do most of the car repairs (or I look up how to do it and tell my husband because I do not have the muscle for some of it)
Oh my goodness .. yes. I used to tell people if you don't know it can be done, there is no point in deciding if it will be done. So, like, if you know WHAT you need and WHERE to get it and HOW much it costs and THAT you can afford the materials, get the materials to where they need to be and pay for or need to be the needed labor, therei s no reason to consider building a thing.
I think that you would find it amusing that my piano teacher taught Liberace when he was a student in Chicago I believe. This very talented German lady would never allow me to play by ear, but insisted that I read the music perfectly. Therefore, I can still read notes, but have no pleasurre in it.
I got good grades in high school but I don't want to study theory without practical and I was interested in automotive mechanic, I did learned it.
As an istp my love language is helping people do things well in a way that benefits them, just small changes that make big differences in outcome. I feel its where I feel the most confident. I think you can learn things from people of all experience levels no matter what the subject is. I hate people that don't like to learn better more efficient ways simply cause they think they know best. Shit even the way I do things is being changed constantly trying to revise and perfect it.
I started learning coding in middle school, just because it was interesting to me. After graduation I found a job of a site administrator, and then decided that I don't need to go to university and continued learning programming on practice. Now I work for a big company, but I'm scared to leave it because I don't have a degree and I have ISTP approach to coding. I don't want to learn technologies that I don't use, and will have to prove to the new company that I can learn very quick on practice if they give me a task. My current company values me because they know I can solve any problem.
I also don't like to communicate, when the problem requires me to ask help or information from someone it stunts me.
so what you're saying here is if an ISTP masters the skill to learn how to learn... they not only become Jack of all trades.... but proficient in all trades?
I always get ISTP on my tests, I'm not a big fan of technical stuff, I'd even say I dislike it. I do however kind of relate to ISTP because I fixate on things sometimes, like an british tv, anime, video game, dance style etc. Any else have tendencies like this?
The dance thing is a little weird, not because we can`t but because we rarely enjoy being the center of attention

@@Catralasarguido Also my view on being introverted: it means being drained of energy when dealing with people. Which then leads to not developing social skills and or being comfortable in social situations. Discomfort in social setting as an introvert is is a cause not a symptom of introversion.

I'm a licensed plumber, but I work for a company that does a lot of commercial and industrial work. I get to do a lot of dangerous task, and I jump on every one of them. Love to work by myself. I let my work and productivity speak for itself. Oh yeah, I'm 56 years old. I'm probably going to retire at about 62. I have atheists and have had a couple of knee and shoulder surgery but other than that I'm healthy ! I still party a little bit but nothing stupid. I grew up in the south so I grew up driving tractors, shooting guns, riding horses, dirt bikes, working on cars and trucks and what ever broke down. And I'm a big loner, I could just be around my wife and I would just fine.
So what are the best skills to learn in the modern world as an ISTP? In a bigger and practical sense.
Programming is indeed a great example but what other alternatives are a good fit for an ISTP?

My ISTP husband is an engineer (surprise, surprise) and he is forced to work in group situations at work, of course... The thing he complains about the most, the absolute most, is other people not listening to him when he's spotted an issue. He can see an issue 50 steps down the line and knows it'll screw up the entire system they're working on. He'll bring it up, but always get shot down by those who "know better" only to watch everyone scramble two years later when things are falling apart.
This hasn't happened once or twice, this has happened so many times I've legitimately lost count. I often ask him why he doesn't bring up these past failures to show that he's always right, but he just can't bring himself to do it. It's frustrating to see it happen again and again because I know it irks him, but he can't bring himself to tell people to STFU and listen (though I can't claim to be any better as an INFJ).
