Huge thanks to fitnessbug.co.uk for my new wall balls - quality kit just like we used in the actual Hyrox event 👍

Nice one Mark. My hope is one event per week for the rest of the year, with backups being Parkruns or Zwift races, no definite plan, but XC Mtb, sprinit triathlon.,kayaking events etc. and see if I can improve by competing. 90% sure if I keep doing events the training, motivation will take care of itself

I vowed to climb the actual alpe d'huez this year. For this I need a lot more strength and endurance since I am exhausted after a 70km ride with almost no climbing.
For this, I train like you described: I ride a bike sometimes, I go to the gym 3-4x per week with a focus on leg training, and incorporate a rest day once per week. This is where I sit home telling myself not to empty the fridge.

Great video Mark. After 55 years of experience on this planet, and the last 5 of them mostly on a couch, I stepped out of my comfort zone and started Crossfit six months ago, and it's been a game-changer. First, your experience at Hyrox, and now this video, and I'm seriously considering signing up for something competitive as a target this year. IMHO my burpees are better than yours, but I'm only 5' 6"! Your views on Insta-fitness are spot on the money - keep up the excellent content.

I'm stealing "expedition to excellence" - great way to capture this state of mind you're experiencing. I sometimes think "I just want a little taste of that glory", that moment when you light it up and the elite category folks take a glance at you with a look of worry on their face. Pursuing that all day, all year? Not interested. But as an expedition there and back? Love it.

After watching several of your videos over the past 3-4 months, I decided to no longer be below average (shooting for average). Started walking every day to work and at least looking at what I am eating before stuffing myself (has caused some calorie deficits). I cut out the sodas and the cookies. I am down 25 pounds. I am returning to the office in August, with hopes of being Above Average fitness.
I am hopeful that I can get in a 5K or two in before that, but my local area doesn't have many.

Boost protein, cut carbs a bit. But if you feel better with some carbs go ahead. Low intensity longer sessions help with fat loss. High intensity for long times may keep weight on. Lift some heavy weights a little bit. High intensity for that, short times. But that's what works for me. Deep slow breath, nose only for most of the days and exercise times.

Hello Mark. I somehow just stumbled into your youtube videos. What can I say very impressed with your content and you are now getting slightly older whit! I am 60 in a few months, I have been running for 38 years this coming March, and have been a triathlete for the last 30m years! This coming season is my 30th consecutive year competing well as you say trying to be just above average. I lift weights swim bike run. And feel as you describe fitter than your average 60-year-old. I have done 6 half ironman races and one only one full Ironman. I fully endorse all you say on here. and will be watching it all from now on. I have been in pre-season since early November now things are beginning to take shape it takes that long when you get older. All the best for the channel love it. David.

Yes - but those guys didn’t have much of a transformation. All of them looked, in their action movies, pretty much the way they looked when they competed. Only Johnson has transformed himself beyond where he was…. But that transformation is obviously a bit more reliant on a huge amount of drugs than a personal trainer 😂

When I have lamented to my better half how sharp and shaped some of those in the movies look, she said the same as you in that is all they do all day, food prepped for them etc So last year for the last 3 months before Ironman, I got to do the same to a degree as my boss and wife let me go for it with the training. F*@k it nearly mentally destroyed me keeping at it, was so tough to stay focused that intently. You will be taking it far further. I wish you all the best, will be great to see the results

I discovered your channel about a month ago and have now binged a lot of your videos. They're very good and your delivery is spot on. The whole 'above average' thing resonates with me, as I'm sure it does with a lot of middle ages blokes like us who just like a bit of fitness.
I will say you've dropped the ball a little bit on this video by avoiding the obvious - Hollywood stars get in the shape they do for movies with the use of anabolic steroids. I have no issue with people doing steroids, I choose not to myself but don't judge those who do. The truth remains the same though, these actors are not doing things 100% naturally and that fact should be talked about in the interest of transparency. That said, still better content than most fitness channels I watch.
I had never heard of Hyrox before seeing your previous video on it and you have motivated me to sign up - see you in London!

    • @MarkLewisfitness
      @MarkLewisfitness  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The steroids thing I ignore because the debates just get very polarised. But I see your point. The purpose of the video though was to see if the things they do that others can’t make a Big difference. And those are things like personal trainers, huge flexibility with time and commitment, massive professional motivation, etc. those are things that Bob at McDonald’s doesn’t have ……. But he does have steroids so in that sense, it isn’t something that sets the actors apart. 16 year old you tubers are on gear, let alone Thor.

You've inspired me to change my diet. I need to lose 12-14kgs of fat and add a couple of muscle (all to improve my Zwift and outdoor cycling experience).

I try to be an all around athlete, like you said I am out to make myself better. Besides at 48 I am in better shape than many 20 year olds I see around me.

A job is exactly that WORK. I do NOT believe that it is easy to go WORK. Good luck Mark. No magic pills. If you want to achieve something you have to put in the effort. "Don't complain about the results you didn't get because of the effort you didn't put in" Someone smarter than me.

Good luck with that plan! Especially that nutrition control sounds like a pretty tough mental challenge.
Still thinking about getting a personal trainer for myself, curious about your summary

it still takes dedication and effort but it is easier as there are roadblock removed that making it easier to do.

Big increase in training volume and a calorie deficit 9 times out of 10 equal injuries! Your recovery is normally on point though so hopefully your that lucky number 10.

Not actually in that much of a deficit - just hungry 😂
