I think Walt's personality can be summarized with 'control'. He has not been in control of his life for most of it, and now he feels like he is. People have used him, manipulated him, ignored him, looked down on him, etc. His wife, his son, his employer(s), his brother-in-law, his friends, his business partners, his students, basically everyone he ever met. Either in real life, or just in his head.
I think that has festered in him, and when he got diagnosed he wanted to have some actual control for once, and that was to control his family would be taken care of after he died. But that opened the door to him being in control of more and more. Turned out he was really good at something a lot of people would pay him a lot of money for. And with money comes power, and power is control.
He's not stupid, at all. He's the smartest guy in the room basically every time. But he's not just his intelligence, he's also his insecurity, his ego, his need to control, his fear of going back to who he was, etc. That's where the dumb decisions come from. But if you look at it through the lens of 'control', it does always make sense WHY he does it.

Walt refuses to admit his family's in danger because it would mean admitting to himself that he CAN'T "have it all." He wants to believe he can be the badass crime boss with a global empire AND also be the wholesome family man with the perfect normal home life. So any suggestion that home life is being compromised is like being told "you failed, you're wrong." And his current ego cannot accept that.

    • @thedarkemissary
      @thedarkemissary หลายเดือนก่อน +4

No. I don't think that's it. I think Walt equates the two together. Being a badass crime boss IS being a wholesome family man with the perfect normal life. If you don't have the 2nd, you're not really achieving the first. I think he sees confidence and comfortability as signs of truly being at the top.

Wow the length these two go to to find reasons to hate Walt. The scene of Mike wanting to go kill Lydia tells you all you need to know, they go “Oh he's gonna put his tiny hat on and say SLAY THE WOMAN” Walter doesn’t want him to kill her they go “he’s an idiot!”. So no matter what Walt was gonna say they was gonna find a reason to hate him.
And it’s funny Mike is the one proposing to go kill Lydia and they don’t even react cause it’s only Walt they judge, they just sit there waiting for Walt to say or do something so they can pounce and rant about it. Meanwhile other characters do just as heinous stuff and they don't get mad about any of it, Mike can kill whoever, Lydia a mother of a young daughter whos scared and they don't even care, but if Walt was doing it they would be flying off the handle saying he's disgusting.
They’re almost unbearable at this point with how they just rant about Walt every single scene he’s in.

because mike calmly states his point of view and walt goes on a ego rant about how this train won’t stop, that’s what makes walt an idiot they literally say this in the video you clearly didn’t watch, but you’ve been in the comment section repeating this over and over, genius move.
Next time, watch the show, surprisingly the show called breaking bad is about a character breaking bad, walt is evil.

And i love how you say they have no issue with Mike wanting to kill Lydia cause he "Calmly states his point of view", yeah sure buddy that totally makes all the difference in the world and makes it fine to want to go kill this woman. If Walt stated his opinion calmly on wanting to kill Lydia they'd rant about it all the same and you know they would.

    • @SAMCRO_89
      @SAMCRO_89 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@thatonediodude4904 "Because Mike Calmly states his point of view" ok you're just blindly defending them i see. He still wants to kill Lydia and they was ready to pounce and rant thinking Walt was gonna agree to it, didn't matter if he calmly agreed to it and explained his reasoning or not they was gonna rage on him.
And its nuts i have to keep repeating this, but no one is mad they don't like Walt, people are annoyed they explode into a rant with every single thing Walt does, every opinion he has, every word practically that comes out of his mouth. I've seen tons of others react to this show and not do that, its literally just them that go on these lengthy rants with every thing his character does. Hate him all you want but ffs we don't need the constant whining about his actions, they need to accept thats who he is in the show and not act outraged every time he does something bad in a show called Breaking Bad.
And i have to keep repeating myself because people like you need to have it explained to you.

@@SAMCRO_89 walt just does a lot of shitty things and people logically call that out, they only got on walt because he literally just said one of the most unhinged lines from him in the entire show, you would know this if you actually watched the show.
Do you want them to celebrate when he poisons kids because you don’t like it when people say bad things are bad?
Getting worked up about a character isn’t a bad thing, it means that you like the show enough that even a hateable character grabs your attention and makes you react, it’s called a reaction video afterall, you’re just mad that they dislike a character you like, and I get it I was 12 once to but nowadays I tend to not mind it when someone doesn’t like my favorite fictional meth man.
You just want them to sit there blindly going “oh there’s walt doing his thing”, you don’t want any discussion on walt’s morals and how he effects the people around him because you can’t handle an opposing opinion on a fictional character, and to top it off you’re watching a form of content where the entire point is hearing opposing opinions….

This show painstakingly shows you the reasons for Walt's bruised yet massive ego, his bitterness and resentment that he carries around with him, his desperation to be remembered and recognised, his general feeling for so long that life dealt him a shit hand, and how ultimately all of that (plus the cancer diagnosis) caused a neutron bomb level explosion inside of him that he has been riding ever since.
And yet you guys say that you don't get his behaviour 😆.
I'm not saying for a second that Walter is a good person; he categorically isn't. But he is painfully human and the show tells you everything you need to know to understand why he does what he does; not matter how frustrating it is at times.

The fact that walter gets worse and worse, the shows point is that yes, he's the villain and a monster who ruins everything around him, and that multiple characters make bad choices and are selfish etc. means that this overwhelming dismissal of walts talents or capabilities is counterproductive. If therr was the slightest acknowledgment of Walt's talents or capabilities, if there was the slightest acknowledgment that most people in this show make bad choices and succumb to some form of greed or pride, if there wasnt a continuing need to elevate other TERRIBLE people up morally as if they didnt also engage in the same behavior that Walt does, then there could be an honest accountig that YES walt is the ultimate villain and the fact that he outstrips the evil of other characters is terrifying, but instead weve got to dismiss the possibility that Walt has any talents, give props to mass murderers for being "reasanoble businessmen" and actively diminish Walt's evil within the story by denying that he had motivations other than pride for various actions. I guess whatever it tales to post-hoc rationalize our feelings rather than take a story for what it is.

When Gus was actively trying to replace him, they were in danger. But, they're all dead. Walt won. There's literally nobody standing against him. Hank is close, but he's always been kinda close. Relatively speaking, they're in the least amount of danger they've ever been in. How is Walt dumb for feeling safe at the moment?
To tag onto your "camping with bears analogy," you're basically arguing never to go camping again. But, what's the problem? You've got your bear repellant (Mike). You've been told all the bears are in hibernation (all rivals are dead). So, why? Fear of the unknown. So, never drive, again? Driving's dangerous. Anything *could* happen. Right?
No. The only dumb thing was not taking Mike's advice. Then again, seems like Walt came up with a convincing idea. Y'all gotta give Walt more leeway. Can't just keep dismissing everything he does cause you hate him. He's trying to make big moves. Let him cook.

It’s stupid of him to think that he “won” and therefore he’s safe. He’s faced violence from the moment he started cooking. His family has been under constant threat. It should be obvious to him that brutality is inherent to the drug world, and it’s not going to go away. Gus couldn’t escape the violence even though he had been meticulously building his business for years. Does he think there won’t be other competitors out for blood? Does he think the cartels simply don’t exist anymore now that the Salamancas are gone? If he’s such an intelligent guy, he should know better. I don’t understand this insistence that Walt is always smart and rational and right. His ego regularly makes him say and do stupid, reckless things. This is classic victim blaming and it's laughable you're calling sexism here, of all times, on this show. Skyler never wanted to be involved in any of this. Yes, she did get involved, she is not perfect, she tried to make the most of her terrible situation and try to pull it all back together in probably the wrong way, but she's very much stuck in an abusive relationship and has tried to leave unsuccessfully multiple times. She also acknowledges that she has broken the law and done wrong things, and she's continuing to try to make things as safe as possible and figure out a way out without getting her family killed by going to the police. So, yeah, I'd say she is more deserving of "forgiveness" here and that has nothing to do with anyone's gender.
"Forgiveness" in quotes, because I don't think Maple or Arianna are actually trying to argue that Skyler has done nothing wrong, so I'm not even sure what you're referring to...? Are you just angry that they're pointing out toxic masculinity in this show?

The way he tries to gaslight people around him into living in his own world is just unfathomable!

I do appreciate the female perspective on this story. I've just been trying to figure out why there is such a huge gender disconnect with Walt. And I think I figured it out. I think men appreciate Walt a lot more for having made it to the top of a dangerous "game" and the brilliance in how he ended up getting there.
Yes, we do realize he had to give up parts of his soul to achieve his dream. And this turned him into a monster at home. But there is no denying his mastermind genius. And I think that's why men respect Walt more than women.
I've been in that game and to start from the bottom & get to the LEGIT top like a Walt is stuff of legends. It's a one in a billion. And we enjoy seeing Walt do the things most of us could never & seeing the cost those things take on him. It's like seeing how bad could we break? For me, I'm out at Jane. I wouldn't have an issue with 8Ball (what's his name, dude locked up in the basement) & Tuco. But I couldn't do that to Jane. I'd save her life & make sure she knew that and use it to my advantage. I'd be like, I could've let you die just now. But here's your blackmail money & a new lease on life so use it to get out of my mine & if I see you again with another blackmail attempt I will not hesitate to disappear you & I'll do it with a clear conscience.
And maybe that's where I fuck up in the game. A loose end that rats me out down the road or something. Gets caught up in Cali 5 years later & facing a year in prison but says "hey, let me go and I'll tell you who is behind that blue meth". But at least I maintained part of my soul & can live with my actions.

Like the girls, I also picked up pretty early on that Walt was the bad guy. But his character was awesome. There are two different types of reactions to that. 1) Choose to root for him anyways, because his character is awesome, and his decisions are what drive the show, or 2) hate on him with every fiber of your being.
To me, 1) was by far more enjoyable. To see where the show would turn next because of his ego and his decisions.
I guess I never realized others watched it and thought he was supposed to be the good guy. I just assumed everyone realized he was a s*** human being by season 2, but figured people would root for him anyways.

Walt gets worse as the show goes on and he becomes more powerful - but it's absolutely hilarious how they seem to pin *all* the blame on him and absolve Skylar of any blame.
Skylar was complicit in Walt's dealings since the start, she even contributed ideas and solutions which he used to get around problems, and she even acted illegally on her own accord to act on other things - look at the whole thing with Ted and how his life is fucked now. Not to mention she literally cheated on Walt way before all this lmao.
Also it's hilarious how they seem to constantly act he's some dumbass who can't understand things lmao. The show clearly portrays him as an underachieving genius (albeit one with a big ego), who regularly outwits and outthinks his enemies. It's wild how they appear to be completely missing the point with him. Walter White is regularly mentioned as one of the greatest TV characters ever, and yet they talk about him like he's some one-dimensional dumbass.

Skylar was always Walt's foil, in uncovering his lies, creating tension, doing things to drive him back to the business, and politically she was so anti-drug the show writers could avoid having the legalization debate. She was a basic, boring, annoying Karen who was always in the way and the people wonder why she's so hated? The show writers built up sympathy for Walt at the beginning, but made no effort to make her likeable. I feel sorry for in this season but she's only in this situation because of her lack of decisiveness. In the beginning Skylar had all the power now she has none of it, and up until S5 it felt like the power was the only thing she really mourned losing. She never cared about Walt, (he doesn't care about her either, they are a total mismatch, did they only marry because she got pregnant?) because she would rather cheat than simply go to her son and tell him the truth. He put the money on the floor told her no one was looking for it(no partners, no rivals, no cops) and she took that as a declaration of war? Accept the money and tell him he's done enough or tell your son the truth. Walt is way more indecisive, but he must continue now to make up for his mistakes.
