I love this opera it is so funny and wild. Rossini at his most theatrical really. This production has evolved over decades since the 1980’s with upgrades re stagings and various lighting over the years.
If not his best, musically, it certainly is his most enduring and amusing. It's endlessly adaptable. I saw this performed at Covent Garden, in honour of the UK hosting the European presidency. If I knew then what I knew now..... :(((
Where'd the castanets suddenly come from? This production has been kicking around since the 80's (Abbado Pesaro '84/Vienna '88); it's held up well. Rossini and Wagner are the twin pillars the operatic firmament rests upon. I only regret really delving into him so late in life.
@@bcnmanhattan5022 I think if you saw a foreign opera company messing with Fratelli d’Italia and acting it out in the manner of Eritreans you might also pass comment. The whole point of the opera is to highlight and parody national characteristics, so to couple incongruous American actions to the oldest and one of the best known national anthems was crass as the American colonies ceased to be British in 1776, and today are not the same thing.

rossini never intended this as a work for the ages, but as an occasional piece for the coronation of charles x and the bourbon restoration. he subsequently reworked much of the score for his french comedy "le comte ory." the score for "viaggio" was reconstructed by musicologist and rossini specialist philip gossett in the early 1980s. many of the rediscoveries represent rossini writing at the height of his compositional powers, such as corinna's final cavatina, seen in this excerpt. i saw the north american premiere of the opera in st louis in 1986, and it was a sheer delight from beginning to end.
