I think the bully PT can go back further to The Biggest Loser reality show. The PTs, especially Jillian Michaels were continually verbally abusive to the contestants, especially in the workout sessions. It was horrible to watch, in my opinion, but it had a long run with great viewer stats. And now the truth comes out that most of the contestants gained back the weight plus some, and were emotionally scarred by the experience.
P.S. I love you and your content. Weight has been a constant "Problem" for me during my life though I've always been physically active and fit. It's only been the last few years that I've felt relaxed about it and feed myself as my body requires... I'm 61, btw, so this has been a long battle.
Yes that’s such a good point. I actually have a video lined up on that too. So many people say the sorts of things they used to. You can really see how it influenced culture.
These PTs are saying what my parents told me growing up, my parents were not bullies they wanted what was best for me, I was shamed for being the bigger girl even though I was sporty. Honestly the shame was a good ingredient for me, it led me to educate myself and find a nutritionist while going to university, worked with her for a couple of years and now I’m set up for life, though it took 9years of trialling and erroring/deprogramming childhood behaviours. If I want to lose weight/maintain/put on I know what macros to hit, it’s gives me a sense of security to take breaks, enjoy holidays and get back on it. I play a team sports which favours those who are leaner at a high level e.g football
This also must prove true for when you are bullying yourself cuz my bullying of myself is one of the biggest reasons for unhealthy behavior while in recovery
If you are a good PT or coach you identify how someone is going to beat achieve (relationship management). How someone wants more of a TLC approach, another person needs someone in front of them directing them in a harsh tone. This specific scenario was my weekend with 2 of my athletes. It’s unfortunate that this platform is being used to shame PT’s which does include many of us who work in the Crossfit space which is a central force for your journey.
Watching this, I’m grateful I stumbled on such a nice PT. Always supportive and calm. I’ve been deathly afraid of gyms, and I still think they are intimidating but now in a place where I can go and know I deserve to be there. No one owns the space and tbh no one cares what I’m doing when I’m there.
Personal trainers are never bullies. The thing is that whatever you are trying to accomplish, the biggest obstacle is a mental obstacle and not a physicial obstacle, often unable to overcome due to a lack of discipline. A regular PT can give you a doze of motivation to reach a goal but an excellent PT will go to the source of the problem and also work on your discipline because (external) motivation is temporarily while discipline is long-lasting. Experiencing this as bully behaviour means you have a very long way to go and maybe even need help from a psychologist in combination with a personal trainer.
the majority of fitness pros online in the last 5 years are just copies of James smith. While he's rose to fame and written books and calmed down some of his shitty behavior - the rest of them haven't. They think this is going to help people and also grow their following...and lets be honest - people still watch it, and still follow. I hate the industry - and as a PT myself - I left. Keep making videos Beth. :)
I think the idea that so much of the online fitness space is related to weight loss because smaller influencers will mimic/be influenced by the more dominant ones is a really good point, I'd never seen james smith in that era, glad. I do wonder how many females get into fitness without developing a negative relationship with food, while admittedly it's common to join a gym to lose weight the automatic assumption I find really offensive. Food/diet is so so much more than calories in/out - I have no issue with a PT encouraging people to eat a richer variety of foods but I remember going to a group PT class and being told repeatedly to go on a cut after saying I signed up to up my lifts, go figure. Do think the idea of health is so skewed, most compliments I've had at the gym is while I've been at my leanest (and was ill) but you know I can do a hell of a lot more now so swings and roundabouts
Gosh I’m so sorry that happened. People shouldn’t be blanket assuming that everyone is pursuing weight loss. Totally agree encouraging food variety can be positive but I think some PTs just can’t help themselves. I also get comments from people like cheering me on but like “you’ll lose the weight soon” I hate it so much
Busy cannot be an excuse. You make time. Time is in your control just like what you put in your mouth. I was in the best shape of my life while married and my three kids were babies and toddlers.
And you probably had a lot of resources to do that. If you had to work 3 jobs to keep a roof over your family and your kids fed, you would probably have a different take.
@@vndk8363Are you even familiar with what Beth does? She's a crossfitter and trains regularly. No one needs to train everyday to be fit. Fitness is defined by certain metrics that have specifically defined values, and she meets all of them.
Furthermore, no one is obligated to do absolutely anything for their health and fitness. They don't owe you anything, and they don't owe the world anything. Their life and world is how they decide they want it to be. I suggest worrying about yourself. What someone decides to do is not your business, and it's definitely not your business to comment on it. Go live your life and leave others alone.
You contradict yourself so much it is not funny. The way you talk about shaming "PT Gym bro's" with their muscles and shirts off in their photos is degrading. Isn't that bullying? It is exactly What you are accusing people of doing to you just the other way around?
hi, I've just recently found your channel and want to thank you for what your doing. you promote such important messages and it gives me hope that I'll be able to unlearn all the fatshaming and degrading things that I was taught about my body and someday I'll enjoy sports and not beat myself up about weight loss. lots of love and keep up the good work, you're an inspiration ❤
Love Ben Carpenter. I even think Joey Swoll is a bully. Reverse bullying. There is a way to call out poor gym etiquette without publicly shaming and humiliating people who may just need to be a little more self aware.
@@BarryMcCockinerEsq when your mom scolded you for behaving poorly, embarrassed you, or publicly shamed you ~ or your ex started nagging you, most likely you couldn’t hear their attempt to correct your behavior. Joey Swoll is doing the same thing. Since he’s a man though, he is not criticized for it. He’s perceived as the ‘disciplined dad.’ Clearly these individuals filming themselves he is “calling out” are struggling with insecurity. They’re overcompensating. He may see more corrective behavior without harming their fragile sense of self worth if he exercised more empathy. It’s an intersectionality of nuance the majority of people won’t understand.
Is it ok to shame people who are shredded or want to look the certain way? Millenials are so much busier? Lol, maybe if they focused on what really matters - trying to be as healthy as possible and cut out all the crap, they'd have much more time.
all i had to hear was being mean to someone for motivation, that does not work you cant be mean to motivate someone all it does it make you wanna shut down and get out of the situation... sorry you had to go through that

Yeah James smith has really calmed down. I find his videos quite helpful. But yeah the others that are really shaming r not helpful.

I think it started before 2017, way before, with The Biggest Loser and Jillian Michaels yelling in people's faces to "motivate" them.
The shade of maybe they aren’t adults yet and are children without responsibilities loll seems possible cuz they are usually hawking a product ❤
