The structure of a sponge does not allow it to get cleaned or disinfected, no matter what you do to them.
You have to throw them out and buy new ones.

Minus the steel one; microwave a wet sponge for a minute or two to kill the germs

If you are paying more for cleaning vinegar its just a ripoff. Cleaning vs eating vinegar is just the concentration\percentage of acid. Just like bleach, alcohol and peroxide all come in different strengths. PS I dont use sponges at all. About once a year i buy a multipack of cheap washcloths in different colors and also a few in white. The white ones are for household cleaning. I earmark one color for dishes and kitchen countertops. The rest go into the bathrooms for bathing. This may not be glamourous but its a very workable solution.

Any vinegar works. Doesn't have to be cleaning vinegar, it's all the same result. But I add bicarbonate soda and vinegar, with boiling hot water from off the fire/gas/ open flame. The hotter the better.

You can put scrub daddies in the washing machine. It’s top rack safe

I put my dish sponges in the dishwasher ever 1-2 uses. Keeps them from getting that dirty smell

I throw my sponges in the washer. I don't generally use steel wool, but the others can be thrown in a washer.

you know another trick to keep your sponges clean? replace them every 1-3 months. regardless of wether you 'clean' them, it will break down and be easily contaminated with bacteria.

Tablespoon of bleach in every sink of dish water. Problem solved. This is how it's done in professional restaurants because you can also sanitize your counters with it.
Putting them in the dishwasher is also a great way to clean them. Not the steel wool, though...that will just rust, which is why your water looked dirty.

Ngl, I put mine in a mesh bag and put them in the washing machine 😂 Except for the scrub daddy bc those can go on the top shelf of the dishwasher to be sanitised 😊

overnight?? a little overkill. just change your sponges 1-2 times a month and make sure you ring them out really good after you use them.

That's why I avoid sponges as much as I can. I use microfiber towels and a brush around the house, and a sponge and brush for the dishes

You can just put it in the dishwasher if you have one. We have Teo sponges that we switch every time we empty the dishwasher
