Americans’ Weekend Trip to Isle of Man TT

  • Watch an American couple visit the Isle of Man TT (again), but this time over a short weekend trip where their flight gets cancelled and they must make alternative plans to watch the TT. Amazing views from the Creg-ny-Baa and Crosby Leap just don't do the TT justice--this is a bucket list item every person must see at least once in their lifetime to appreciate the machinery and both skill and courage of these insane pilots.

Well done, you two! I go every year, and have a standing reservation at a hotel in Douglas. I arrive the day before the first race day, and leave the day after the last race. I live in North Florida, so it’s a bit shorter trip for me. I usually watch from Quarterbridge Corner, the first real corner of the racecourse. They’re on cold tires with full gas tanks, and it’s a tricky corner, so you get to see many different tactics for making this tough double apex corner. The two biggest advantages of watching from there are 1) The bikes are going slow enough to actually see them maneuvering, and 2) Nobody ever dies there. Plus, it’s less than a 2 mile walk from my hotel!

Wow, every year? We’ve only been twice but can’t wait to go again. We watched from Quarterbridge one day on our first trip and enjoyed it. Perhaps we’ll see you there in the future!

Thank you for watching, and thanks for the compliments! I’m just an amateur who loves motorsports and loves to share my motorsports experiences with others. Next TT trip I will provide commentary on recommendations/lessons learned from my visits and a summary monologue. This particular visit was so quick (a stop en route to India) that I didn’t take time to sit back and enjoy everything as much as my last TT, but my favorites this trip were the racing action (of course), the Manx pale ale, the fish n chips, meeting new friends from across the world (namely some Dutch folks), and of course the local Manx peoples’ hospitality.

Looks like you had a good trip, glad you enjoyed it. As others said, the weather was glorious this year but it often isn't, lol. Races can be delayed due to inclement weather across the island - it can be sunny in Douglas but misty and wet over in Kirkmichael, or low cloud on the mountain. If possible it's best to plan for a week's visit just in case of delays, plus gives the opportunity to do a lap ànd explore the island. Watching videos is great but not a patch on actually being there. The guys racing are a rare breed, special talent for sure, hats off and much respect to all who take up the challenge.

Hello Robbs Garage , quite an epic trip , but not as bad as some I have heard ! I lived in California in the 60´s , went every year 1st week in May through half of June . 1st NW200 in Port Stewart, thrn 2 weeks I.O.M. Always went SF to New Jersey, then NJ to Belfast, then on the Steam Packet Ferry from Belfast / Douglas, 3hrs . Cheapest & easiest . B & B @ "Railway House" Kirkmichael, With the "Kerruishes" , Jane still runs it, alongside the oldest Pub on the Island, The "Mitre", one of the oldest families / clans on the rock. First time I went , 1957 , last time 2020. Can´t miss !
Hope you go back again, I´ve been 41 times ! Idid the M.G.P. in 1964 , then the TT in 1965. Keep safe, A.M. Ward.

You COULD have flown direct from NY to Dublin, or Gatwick, or Manchester and flown the brief hop direct from there or Liverpool to IoM, or taken a ferry from DUB or Liverpool! Americans just don't go out of their country much at all! DUH. Brits travel the world without thinking anything of it, or making silly criticisms or a song and dance of it. Nor do we spend the entire time stuffing our faces. Yes, there were/are rail strikes on but that has affected travel nationwide for well over a year, so you should have been well aware of it. The train drivers get paid a BASIC which is roughly half the Prime Minister's salary, so I for one shed no tears for them. I last took a train over two decades ago, they are WAY more expensive than flying internally in UK, I wonder why..

We’ve previously taken the hopper from Dublin to IOM after touring the Irish countryside for a week. I much preferred that, but this time our options were limited because we were fresh off the Caribbean and only had a weekend to spare in IOM because it was a stop en route to visit India. Next time I want to take a motorbike and ferry over, so thanks for the recommendation! Totally agree with you in the trains. Seems every other trip I make to Europe there’s a strike, but you get used to it.

@ShalomBrother Because of the Bull the other side won't Like it .But seriously we have a Network of Footpaths all over the UK. Crossing Farmers Fields .Use them and Respect the Farmers property. If a gate is closed. Find a Style or Footpaths. Remember at all times follow .THE COUNTRY CODE REMOVE ALL LITTER .KEEP DOGS ON LEADS ESPECIALLY IN LAMBING SEASON .

Well done. Sincere apologies for the CRAP state of UK transport. Total con. My local airport (EMA) doesn't even provide a flight - unless I fly to Eire ( Ireland) first ! All I can say is I hope you enjoyed your "taste" - but there a few locations FAR better... Next Year? -for a WEEK? I.O.M is a beautiful place to explore on "non-racing" days...you might even get some sleep............

We enjoyed very much! Do you have recommendations for viewing locations?
On our fist trip we were able to enjoy the IOM much more and venture about on non-race days. This was just a quick visit, and I’m thrilled we were able to get all the action in during the short time we were there.

The 'crap' UK transport system is light years ahead of the (almost non-existent) US public transport service. There have always been limited flights to the IOM, no matter when you go. If there's nothing flying there from EMA then it's because they can't justify the cost of running a service.

It was a frustrating experience at the time. I was fuming, and the video doesn’t show all the drama as we tried to find alternate solutions. Nevertheless, we worked as a team and it has made for a great story to share with friends. Overall wonderful experience, highly recommended, and have lessons learned for the next IOM trip.

Just watched the first 5 minutes of this vid and so far you have done nothing but complain. It's not an airports fault if a plane is cancelled. The security checks at the airport were because the US demanded increased security. Try going to the US as a non american and see what your check is like. Complaining about no facilities at an isolated part of the island. Not bothering to watch anymore.

To each their own they say, but if there’s one motor race that can excite even a non-motorsports fan it’s the Isle of Man TT. The shear risk of life and death-defying feats is unreal. Video doesn’t do it justice, but when you see these motorbikes flying in the air at over 180mph it makes even the spectator feel how precious life can be.
