It wasn’t a hate crime. She lied about when, where, & who it was, because it was her brother’s boss & his subordinate. The reporter keeps dragging her through the mud until the trial tickles his conscience. He releases a third piece w/ what happened. The jury sees it, resulting in a mistrial. They manage to swing a deal where the boss throws his subordinate under the bus, & he gets off w/ sexual misconduct. (The underling gets 5-15 years. The boss, who was the mastermind behind everything, maybe gets 1 year.) Why a deal? To prevent a retrial the boss paid off the girl’s family. To the parents, their daughter had lost her honor & that was that. Exact number wasn’t given, but it was enough for her brother to go back to school for his Masters (MBA specifically).

I get their vitriol, especially since the father was a victim of a hate crime post-9/11. However, when it turns out it was a Muslim man of great standing, they just wanted to finish it fast. Rather than get justice, they just wanted to sweep it under the rug. Their daughter was now just a dirtied woman without honor in their eyes.

"New York is supposed to be better than New Delhi" in regards to Islamophobia and related hate crimes? I am curious as to what evidence she had to support that claim.
Not suggesting the statement is true or false, moreso, that is a very specific claim to make and I can't imagine a basis for researching that with a sufficient sample size of participants and testimonies.
It would have been more plausible had she said "America" instead of New York. Also, New Delhi has a sizeable Muslim population and although violence and assaults do occur, crimes that are based in bigotry, especially sexual assault, are not commonplace.
