  • This was the second in our Wilmington Bicentennial Summer Speaker Series presented by the Wilmington Historical Society, "And Grandma Said…Iroquois Teachings: as passed down through the oral tradition" with author and former sub-chief of the Bear Clan of the Mohawk Nation at Akwasasne, Tom Sakokweniónkwas Porter. Porter’s presentation worked its way chronologically through the major events embedded in Iroquois oral history and ceremony, from the creation story, to the clan system, to the four most sacred rituals, to the beginnings of democracy brought to his people by the prophet and statesman known as the Peacemaker. Tom also participated a book signing of his book after his presentation.

What sacred teachings, thank you! My great, great, grandfather was Iroquois but I don't know which specific tribe, I try to learn the stories of all tribes though.
I know these stories,! They are from very sacred books that had been hidden for many centuries and found in 1945. Stories from Christ after his resurrection in his light body, and in his light body people seen him differently depending on who who he was teaching:
"Jesus tricked everyone, for he did not appear as he was, but he appeared so that he could be seen. He appeared to everyone. He appeared to the great as great, he appeared to the small as small, he appeared to the angels as an angel and to humans as a human. For this reason his word was hidden from everyone. Some looked at him and thought they saw themselves."
The great peacekeeper who united the Iroquois tribes was born of a virgin, taught of the tree of peace, and said he was the Eagle at the top, that is the sign of the savior:
"Now, the color of the tree of life is like the sun, and its branches are beautiful. Its leaves are like those of the cypress, and its fruit is like clusters of white grapes. Its height rises up to heaven. And next to it is the tree of knowledge, possessing the power of god. Its glory is like the moon shining forth brilliantly, and its branches are beautiful."
"Our sister Sophia is the one who descended in an innocent manner to restore what she lacked. For this reason she was called life, that is, the mother of the living, by the forethought of the sovereignty of heaven and by the afterthought that appeared to Adam. Through her have the living tasted perfect knowledge.
As for me, I appeared in the form of an eagle on the tree of knowledge, which is the afterthought of the pure enlightened forethought, that I might teach the human beings and awaken them from the depth of sleep."
Sophia is sky woman, our Grandmother. She was thrown out of her heaven and abused and impregnated by the first ruler:
"The first ruler defiled Eve and produced in her two sons, a first and a second: Elohim and Yahweh.
Elohim has the face of a bear,
Yahweh has the face of a cat.
One is just, the other is unjust.
He placed Yahweh over fire and wind,
he placed Elohim over water and earth."
It is the same as the daughter and her twins, one good and one bad. In the Seneca creation story which is very similar to the Mohawk it was the sky chief who uprooted the celestial tree who impregnated sky woman and pushed her into the hole in the sky world, everything that the Iroquois describe is just as Christ explained in his light body after his resurrection. As he appeared differently to people I think the Iroquois tribe seen him as a native American as the great peacekeeper and his teachings are the same as in the sacred hidden books. I have heard Navajo stories of Christ after the resurrection blessing the tribes and teaching them about plant medicine and ways to live in peace, it seems he appeared before many tribes as he would best be seen.
The celestial tree stretched into heaven and had a flower that gave light and is the same as the tree of like and knowledge which were the color of the sun and the moon. The Eagle at the top is the biggest connection.
It can't be a coincidence that the Iroquois stories of creation are the same as the story of Sophia from Christ in his light body, it seems important that the oral stories are the same as the hidden books. I feel like I know the gist of the truth and I find it in all of the sacred stories like these, it is so amazing. These stories are pieces of a much larger story, thank you for sharing, every story helps!
I don't have a clan or a tribe, but I have always felt a connection with the Lynx!
