    these tracks have no right to be this criminally underrated while sounding so GOOD!
    (ok I edited this part so the comment would say this)
    It amazes me how such midi tracks slap so hard yet they came from old pieces of software from back in the day that probably not many people know about or was even hidden in windows! I don't know who composed these but they're highly underrated and I would really like to know who they are

    • @IsmailofeRegime
      @IsmailofeRegime 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I assume these tracks (at least the 3.0 and 95 ones) were intended to show off the capabilities of midi technology and test sound cards, so it makes sense they'd sound better than average.

      Important to remember however, that midi files only contain note, velocity and sustain (etc.) information, so they can sound vastly different depending what sound engine is used to play them. They didn't sound like this on early soundcards of the era. We can hear good quality stereo reverb on the renderings in this video, not something you would have heard in 1990 out of your basic 16-bit sound card.

    • @dustinhendricks951
      @dustinhendricks951 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Windows XP was the epitome of what windows operating systems have ever been. Of course they push the idea that they made their systems more user-friendly today ... No they made them much more restrictive for what people can actually do themselves with a PC. I used to be a geek of sorts cut my teeth with a hand me down apple 2 when I was in first grade from windows 95 through Windows XP I was getting a good grasp of the tech that was in front of me. I was learning just enough to get me into trouble. Knowledge is power 🍻 But they changed all that! The ease of learning of the world of computer programming is no longer easily obtainable by the average individual and they made it that way. The back door of tinkering with computer programming in a personally owned computer has been removed and next to impossible to tamper with.😭

    The other MME MIDIs have me floored by their phenomenal quality! Love them or hate them, Microsoft was really cool until 2001, having a genuine slice of life to their software. What other graphical environment comes with general-purpose music to get down to? Maybe some bits of OS/2 Warp, but not much else!

    • @The_Mimewar
      @The_Mimewar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I’d say until 2003. Their support was largely still on shore and HELPFUL. During XP service pack 2 was when things DISTINCTLY changed. Everything was black and white, customer service was off shore and unable to offer the help that in country techs can, and everything got much more frustrating.

  • @_MasterLink_
    @_MasterLink_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Not sure if you knew, there's actually two versions of Canyon.mid. The early version is bugged with percussions on a second channel as well as channel 10. The later version fixed it. (If your version of canyond.mid actually came from 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions, then your synthesizer luckily discarded the bugged track. Sadly FM synthesizers like used on SoundBlaster's or Adlib's attempt to play it with a piano sound and it just sounds like a droning sound basically.)

      Is the 2nd drum channel a GM2 feature?

    • @CoTeCiOtm
      @CoTeCiOtm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, all MIDIs from Windows 3.0 and 3.1 come with a low volume duplicate of the drums in channel 16 with a piano patch (so yeah, it's a piano playing the MIDI notes for the drums), plus some instrument duplicates in channel 13, 14 and 15. SEASONS.MID has some sax in those channels and it sounds pretty bad if your synth actually play them. The versions of CANYON.MID and PASSPORT.MID included in Win95 onward (or was it Win98? I don't remember) completely removed channels 13 to 16, so it gives me the impression that none of the Windows 3.0 MIDI files were made with those channels in mind and they were included solely for the purpose of them being played on a specific synth or something? I don't know, I'm just theorizing here. I made some tests on an SC-55 and actually they sound better without those channels, with them, they start drowning the drums in the mix.

    Just a couple things I want to correct:
    - The Windows XP midi files first appeared in Windows Me.
    - Pinball technically first appeared as part of Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95, and didn't actually become part of the OS until Windows NT 4.0.
    Otherwise, great video!

    I've never actually listened to Canyon all the way to the end before. It was quite uplifting. I conjured images of fat white business men wearing light blue shirts and dancing in the sunbeams from the venetian blinds in a blissful reverie of achieving goals and high fiving each other. Then the song ends on a blurp noise... Then a little bell goes ting! A thing of mysterious strangeness.
