I don't think the problem is self-promo-y, it's interesting to understand how the band grew and changed and what it takes for you guys to do what you do. However, maybe change the title to reflect that portion of the video? I was excited for the mash-up aspect but it seems like you guys have a pretty simple system/way of talking about it that doesn't take a ton of explaining. if you need a catchy title maybe something like "Pomplamoose is Actually A Company!?" or something. I have a bias to Pomplamoose, I've been a patron for a long time and love the music so I had fun.

My son likes Pomplamoose's mash-up *way* more than either original track. If I'm listening to the Eurythmics or the Stripes, I get an immediate request for "the mixed up one". And I'm ok with that.

Yeah. And the way the video starts with Ben Rose (iirc) suggesting it and saying they could feel free to shoot it down really makes the video even cooler. Like, it's an amazing song and apparently they had the idea right before recording.

Great video. As someone who started in the 70s working for studios in the UK owned by traditional managers and producers, I love the upside-down nature of this where the "product" (the band) own the company, and employ or contract those who previously would have signed them. It makes so much sense, and avoids situations like with The Animals (I knew Chas Chandler) who pretty much earned nothing from House of the Rising Sun. Micky Most got most of it. You should put this in a short book as a kind of template for both bands and solo artists - a "how to keep control of your B(r)and!"

To me this didn't feel like self-promotion at all. I think this amazing thing you've all birthed into the world Pomplamoose, and the way you're thinking about the changing industry, new business models, new and younger creators and musicians, all of it comes forth with a lot of care and hope for a brighter future. It's so clear that y'all really want more people to live their artistic passions in a sustainable way with more self-determination and choice and know-how that you didn't have access to in the beginning, that's what comes through from this, not self-promo.

Back in 2008 when I was studying music, I stumbled upon the Pomplamoose's video 'My Favorite Things'. It blew my mind, honestly. The 5/8, 6/8 (11/8?) mashup was amazing. We tried to play it at the musical ensemble class but we couldn't work it out as precise as yours, even so, it was an excellent learning process. Every cover was awesome. I downloaded them all (sorry?) and played 'em on my old mp3 device.
Thank you, Jack and Nataly, you were and ARE a big inspiration to me!
Also, when I found out you are the founder of Patreon... WTF DUDE! Come on, thats freaking nuts! Thanks again! You are making everything more easy for us!

There is so much great information in this episode. Young musicians are never taught the business side of the music industry. My young late teen to mid 20s self had to learn the leadership skills that I had no idea about. Song selection, set lists, bookings, paying everyone, paying rent, paying for PAs and vans..... Many of those things I learned in my bands was reused in what turned into my profession (IT Management). Thanks for being a light to young musicians.

I've had a couple thought about Scary Pockets and Pomplamoose over the past couple years of watching yall grow and this seems like a good opportunity to start a discussion -- it seems like the "business models" of these bands can have their own unique challenges, and I would propose can be antithetical to artistry if one is not careful. Obviously, Jack and Nataly have proven themselves many times over to be skilled entrepreneurs, and the success and "processification" of the band discussed in this episode hits this home. I can't help but feel that sometimes this can turn into a "conveyer belt" of art, which dilutes the strength of the art over time. Having to produce a product every week is daunting, and I imagine that it requires you to take an idea and run with it in quick succession. This is an awesome starting point and can sometimes lead to brilliance, but I can't help but feel that it can lead to a lot of run-of-the-mill music, where it feels forced or uninspired. I've sometimes felt that with these two bands, the brand takes precedence over the music. Especially when you're dealing with covers in this particular genre -- you can lean on the same tricks and it gets old to a musically literate audience who can "get" everything you're doing.
With a typical musical project, you do second and third drafts and cut songs from an album to distill the musical moment to its purest form. With Scary Pockets and Pomplamoose, you don't have that luxury because you're forced into a conveyer belt mentality. That's why so many online creatives get burnout so easily. Since these bands have lots of talented people, of course they're also making amazing music as well and I've enjoyed lots of their work. I guess with these business models, for every amazing tune, you push out a couple filler tunes as well to keep the content train going. For me, it dilutes the magic. But then again, it allows you to get 401ks for your colleagues, and that's tight.

I think this is lovely and really helpful, not self promoting in my humble opinion. in fact I think you can make a series with talking about the process of more tunes made by Pomplamoose and Scary Pockets, telling us a little more how do come up with specific arrangements, why you decided to do X unison, or choose Y harmony, why the bassist decided to lock that way with the drums... and so on. I would really enjoy more of this hehe.

Thank you for a terrific video! I don't think you're self promoting too much at all. You're giving advice on how to turn your passion for music into a business that sustains itself. What better way to do that than to describe your own experiences. And, it's not like you're saying "our band is the best and go listen to us". You're giving credit to everyone who helps make it all happen.
As a side note, someone will watch this and inevitably take it the wrong way, so why even worry about it.

I'm the type of person to watch a movie and check out the behind the scenes, or music video, or music production tutorials on how my favorite songs are made, and inside baseball on stuff to do with business and politics as it relates to my love for the entertainment industry.
So, yeah, using your own personal success as a band/business/brand, it just adds weight to the conversation that you're talking as opposed to like a college professor telling you how to build a million dollar business when they are on a university salary.
So, even if it's self promotional, who cares? The value you're giving in exchange is priceless imo.

This is Berklee School of Music master class about the modern music industry! This is incredibly valuable. As an aside, it was watching Nataly and Jack's early VideoSongs that inspired this old dinosaur to get off my arse and start recording in my own bedroom studio back in 2010. I started with a Shure BG 4.0 SDC mic >> Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer >> Alesis 3630 compressor >> TEAC US-122L >> (freeware) Audacity v.1.3 >> Sony Forge (mastering with cracked copy) >> Steinberg WaveLab (Limiter & mp3 rendering). I used no EQ or Compression in Audacity, it was all simply mix balancing. Light Reverb only on vocal tracks only, and light Reverb in Sony Forge for glue. It was so much fun that I banged out about 20 tracks in about 20 days, which was humping given that they were 16-26 tracks per tune with me laying down all the vox, guitars, bass, and percussion. It was so much fun that I enjoy recording more than live gigs now.
Thank you guys for all the inspiration!

I think more people need to hear the message about growing once you can't do it all yourself. It sounds obvious but speaking for myself it's easy to get caught up in ideas of competency, especially when the answers seem to be about you becoming disempowered. To take the step of building your own team and working in an environment that reflects your values is genuinely mind blowing.

If you want to hear another mashup, that also features tambourine, I recommend L'Trimm Vs. Arman Van Helden Vs. The Beatles Vs. Gary Numan - "My Other Car Is A Beatle".

Thank you thank you thank you for doing what you guys are doing. I found Pomplamoose maybe 4 years ago, which led me to Scary Pockets to Scary Golding to Stories to....... First of all the music is great. I kinda get a lil quiver when I see a new cut from any of you and I've not been disappointed yet. Secondly, all of y'all's covers (maybe you should all then "recovers".....there's a ton of songs out there that we don't need to loose) you seem to breathe life into all that you take on. Thirdly, your approach to Pomplamoose/Patreon etc......seems to me that I'm seeing vocalists and instrumentalists that I wouldn't likely come across in a small city in Texas. Your production and promotion has turned me on to any number of performers and, I expect, they are drawn to y'all because they can make music without all the hassle of finding/keeping a band, hiring studios, etc etc etc. Some will likely outgrow you, but what a grand way to build your stature in "the biz", same said for your treatment of your partners/employees...."benefits in the music busines.....what a grand idea!" Finally, it seems like y'all's presence has grown while we've been trapped indoors with the pandemic. You're approach is making mucho good music more accessible and affordable for old retired guys like me. Again THANK YOU

Liked this one a lot. I think your business model for Pomplamoose could also apply to entrepreneurial media / entertainment ventures outside of music - podcasting, indie publishing, etc.

Another great episode, was really cool seeing how the band works to create a track, but also the structure and your approach to the industry, etc.

This was great! Definitely helps me feel better about the pressure to Do It All, and gives insight into how to create sustainably. Plus I loves me some mashups! I finally completed my first music projects in forever, and it was an overly elaborate mashup cover of The Knife and Afro Celt Sound System that I am pretty proud of. Now I'm feeling inspired to keep at it!

As someone who’s watched Pomplamouse since the old TH-cam days and has always aspired to be like them, this was some of the best industry advice I’ve ever heard. “Would we like more?” Hell yeah I’d like more! 🤪

OK, so you already know I love you guys. But this. This was great! In fact, this was actually the first episode of this series that I watched from beginning to end in the first sitting with no interruptions. I didn't even realize it until it was over, but it kept my attention in a way that previous episodes (all of which I DEEPLY enjoyed) didn't. So yeah. More of this I guess.

I think the reason people find this podcast is because they love the music you are making so I personally love hearing you guys break it down and getting that inside look at the process.

One point around the "does this feel too self promotional" thing - we hear you guys talk about how much you'd love to have been in the room during some classic recording sessions and that's exactly how this feels to us fans! Such awesome insight

I like a two amp stereo mix which allows the "sensation" of doubling live while playing solo (without computer or looper).

Definitely not too self-promo-ey (I learned a new word today)! This episode is basically a cross-over episode (mashup, if you will) between Professional Musicians React and Jack Conte Extras (best of two worlds), very inspirational!
