      They don't own the land. They never worked for it and earned it. They're just squatters who are too hard to remove. They're leaches and taking people's good will. The only reason they can stay there is because the NZ government has found it too hard, expensive and problematic to evict them. It was so difficult that the govt gave them "tacit permission" to stay.
      There is nothing grand and wholesome about being a leach no matter how romantic it looks.

    I live off grid too, but closer to civilization, and you guys have more experience. Learned something from your mom. It is something I had recently started to do, but she explained how long she could keep a stew with meat good for days without a refrigerator. I use a pressure cooker that is pretty well sealed so the process is a bit like canning. I also can lots of deer, elk and bear. I'm in NW Montana. I use to travel a bit myself, but I given what is happening in the world, I believe it is best to stay closer to home. Please do not go so far away that you can not get home within a few days. The financial markets are looking like they can collapse in the next year or so.

    • @WildKiwiAdventurer
      @WildKiwiAdventurer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Haha yes I am aware of that but I kNow that I can survive anywhere I end up even if there are some problems. Gorge River is My place to go back to if the world falls apart. For now tho I am making the most of every moment. I am in arctic Norway now

    • @tunnelrabbit4293
      @tunnelrabbit4293 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WildKiwiAdventurer I learn to ski in Tronhjem, Norge in 1979. I use to be a world traveler like yourself, and spoke Danish. I have similar skills, and other survival skills few have, and now live on the edge of civilization. We are unusual persons that have an advantage in our own back yard, but in foreign lands, we are at a disadvantage. I also have 25 years experience trading and studying financial markets. I gave up a comfortable life to come here over a decade ago, because of what I know. The financial system around the world can freeze up in only hours leaving you stranded with no way to get home. I just had to tell you that, and let you look into it. I know you will not welcome this advice, but I would stay in New Zealand. Sorry. Many wealthy persons are planning to be in New Zealand when it falls apart. But they have private jets. Good luck....

    • @WildKiwiAdventurer
      @WildKiwiAdventurer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes i am aware of how fast it can all fall apart and as long as I am not in Antarctica I am not too worried. I can survive anywhere. I always figure you can sail back to New Zealand. It would just take some time but I could do that as long as you can find some sort of boat.

    • @tunnelrabbit4293
      @tunnelrabbit4293 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WildKiwiAdventurer Thanks for the reply. I'm encouraged that you are thinking about these things. Yes, it would be possible to sail back, but simply surviving the violence in the highly populated regions would be unlikely, and then one must finding the right kind of sailboat, and then learn to sail the high seas. All very unlikely. Living New Zealand and stocking up supplies for the family is what I would do. They may not survive without you. You need to be there to defend them from city folk. I live in a remote area, but it is still not remote enough. And we know how to defend ourselves. Few do. Best Regards, TR

    Ah loved every minute of this video and your da explaining the house you grew up in as a lad (and you ma's comments about where she washed your nappies!).
    Such a simple, gentle, environmentally friendly lifestyle. A harkback to times that used to be, so removed from where most people live now, but inspiring that there are still people living in this modest, undamaging way on the planet. (And, sorry about the brushtails - they're a plague in urban Australia too, although you're not allowed to touch them!).
    Chris, I'll expect you'll see the world, as you're doing right now, but finally want to come home to this idyllic place of your childhood, and you'll be happy living out your days there.

  • @YlvaBjarnson

    I was wondering why your mother collects the wood rather than your father to heat the house? Does he have a physical impairment? They live so far away from any doctor. I wonder if there will be a time where they have to move into town to be near the doctors.

    • @WildKiwiAdventurer
      @WildKiwiAdventurer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They share all the jobs that need to be done around the house including firewood but but most of Dads time goes towards making money from his artwork. Thats how my family makes most of our income. Mum would usually fill the bags and my sister and I would carry them. When I go home now I carry a huge amount of wood to keep them going for a while

    Is it legally possible to start a life like yours in the wild today? I'm asking because I've been dreaming about such a life for the most part of my life.

    • @WildKiwiAdventurer
      @WildKiwiAdventurer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it's still possible but you might have to take over an existing house or hut in the wilderness. You can't really build a new one,but you can live in a tiny house on wheels or big solid tent or something like that. It all depends where you want to do it and the type of land you do it on. Maybe you can find a land owner who is OK with you building a small cabin on their land too possibly

      I won’t give his full name but it was Mark from Greymouth and the timing would’ve been maybe 25 years ago. He swapped some gold nuggets for some food from my father-in-law who was hunting in the raw in gorge River.

    Can your dad make me a cameo ring, size women's 7 out of the green jade. I would like it to be a beautiful Victorian woman with her hair up in a bun. It can be put on some type of hardwood, or you could just make the Cameo and I could deal with the rest of the ring when I get it.
