    Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I'd like to add, first, I purchased the power steering belt from two different auto part stores, both were too short. Went to Lexus and the OEM fit perfectly...so I recommend OEM belts. Also, it is not possible to swap the power steering belt without removing the alternator belt. Again, thanks and great tutorial!

      What car did you try this on, if it was a bigger vehicle (Sienna, Highlander RX330) I understand your difficulty in reaching that bolt. The sedans (ES300, Camry, Avalon, Solara) are easier to access from the side. If your having difficultly regardless, remove the dog-bone engine mount and its bracket holding it to the engine and you'll have plenty of clearance to get at it from the top.

    I just want to say, "Thank you so much, speedkar99!" After reviewing several videos to perform this belt change, yours is the one that truly helped. The diagrams were extremely beneficial (for me, at least). I had to let up more tension than I had expected and also had to get a little physical with the alternator itself to get it to shift, but I couldn't have done any of this without your DIY video. Been out of work for a few weeks, and I sure couldn't have afforded someone doing for me. Wish I could buy you lunch! Thanks, again! ~HL

    The power steering pump pivot bolt on top of and slightly behind the pulley is the most hidden and difficult to access bolt I have ever experienced. No wonder you could not show us how you got your ratchet on it! At first I did not believe it was even there and I was going to tell you so. I finally found it by feel only. I could not get enough clearance with my older Craftsman 1/2" ratchet, so I put the 12mm 12 point socket on a breaker bar and was then able to get enough clearance to get a bite on it. After breaking it loose, I switched a 3/8" ratchet to further loosen it. My Chilton manual makes no mention of the pivot bolt, only of the belt tension adjusting bolt which passes through the slotted bracket. Thank you for this helpful video. I wish I would have watched it first and learned the proper loosening sequence before breaking the alternator belt tension adjusting bolt in half.

    Thanks. Very helpful. Both the location and size of wrenches for the bolts were very helpful. The only difference is how difficult it is to break loose these bolts if they haven't been loosened before! On my 2002 Highlander for the power steering bolt, I used a breaker bar, a six point socket, a small extension, placed it on the bolt from the wheel well, then reached through the hood to grab the breaker bar and loosen the bolt. Took quite a while to figure out this approach.

    • @speedkar99

    It works well to use a phillips screwdriver in the bolt slot to tension the power steering belt. The method you show with the flat blade screwdriver going somewhere above the belt is way more difficult. Also, it's possible to get the belts on without prying with a screwdriver...safer for your belts too. Thanks for the video...worked great for a 2004 Highlander 6 cylinder.

    After a while the rubber belt starts to deteriorate and crack. It also looses traction on the pulleys and start slipping and screeching. Eventually, it could break and leave you without power steering, A/C and a charging system while driving. Basic maintenance.

      @@speedkar99 - just did this again on a Lexus RX330 and you do not have to do that top bolt - just the top one on the bracket. Just by loosening that one the pump assembly will move. using a small lever/pry bar you can position it in the slot to push the pump assembly farther up. It has to go to where the threaded hole is almost no longer visible in the slot. That moves it enough to get the new belt on. Then I put the bolt back in snug but not tight and put a racketing wrench on it using the housing of the wrench as a pry point and the car frame body as a lever point. That allows you to pry it back down to its original position which i scored so I knew where it was originally. Very easy but DO NOT open the can of worms of trying to get the hidden bolt loose. It is a disaster due to access believe me. Thanks Again Speedkar99

    How do you know when the belts are tight enough?

  • @zellerized
    @zellerized 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    On a 2000 es300, the top bolt for the power steering belt is super hard to access and I had to pray to get it off, literally, but it immediately came off after! I also had to remove a fuse box in the front of the engine to get to the tensioner bolt for the alternator belt. Thanks for the vid!

    • @zellerized

      in addition, es330 provides much more room to work than the es300...

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +zellerized I disagree. The 97-01 generation of 1MZ-FE Camry/Solara/ES300 has way more space in the engine compartment than the 3MZ-FE 02-06 Camry / ES, I have both so that's what I can say. Yes that fuse box comes out on the Solara/ES300 to access that alternator bolt easier.

    • @zellerized
      @zellerized 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +speedkar99 -- it seemed that the 300 had less room because I had to move stuff out of the way to access the bolts on the alternator, and it was still tight for me, but in your vid of the 330 you easily slapped the wrench right on those bolts..

As I tighten the bolt to tighten the belt, It keeps going cocked upwards and not flat on the bracket! any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

    Thankyou very much for the great videography. I was struggling with loosening the power steering pump.
    I only have a Haynes manual and they had the infamously classic vague description: "loosen the bolts". Due to the location of the pump, it's not obvious where the top bolt is. Your video showed the elusive bolt! Thanks!

    Thanks for an excellent video. . . Just want to say, that adjuster bolt on the alternator belt frequently breaks on an older car. Mine did on my 95 Avalon, even though car is very well maintained. They get frozen in place on the threads, and the bolt head breaks off. Fortunately, Dorman sells a replacement kit I found for $9.32 on Amazon.(Search Dorman 917-148 Idler Pulley Adjuster Bolt Kit). If it breaks don't feel bad, it happens to a lot of people. That's why Dorman has this replacement kit on the market. The same set up is used over many years on Avalon, Camry, Sienna and many others.

    I noticed other videos show them loosening the Alternator pivot bolt first, then the pench and tension bolt to remove the belt. Then when to put it back on they pull up on the alternator (since it's loose) and while they pull it up, tighten the alternator pivot bolt, then the front tension bolt, and lastly the pench polt.

    I have an 03 Avalon with the same type of belt with alternator tensioner. it has been making a loud chirping noise and I'm not sure if it's too loose or if there's some other problem. what is the spec for tightness? I saw you check how right it was in the video but from this angle it's hard to tell exactly how far it went down or how hard you're pushing

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +dummkompf A very general rule of thumb is it shouldn't deform more than half of the belt's width.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dummkompf The 1MZ-FE manual specifies the belt tension to be (measured with a belt tension gauge) 175 lbf for a new belt and 115 lbf for a used belt.

  • @donnievick3076

    Seems to me the tensioner is the top and the pivot bolt is the bottom for the power steering belt since the bottom pivots in the metal bracket. I say this because the top one is the one that tightened my belt back up. Also, I could not get to the top bolt for the power steering at the angle you're using for my 02 Lexus. Well, I could get it on there, but I didn't have any room to work it. I had to use a 1/2 drive ratchet with a 3/8's drive reducer and a 12 mm socket to get the top bolt loosened and I had to go in from the bottom left to get the socket on it. Very easy from the bottom left. Video was a big help though.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Donnie Vick Thanks. Yes that top bolt is damn difficult to get to. Its way easier if you take the engine mount and bracket off and get at it from the top: as I did when doing my timing belt ...but that's a lot of work fmif just changing the PS belt.

  • @abyssalsoul6216
    @abyssalsoul6216 ปีที่แล้ว

    At time 2:06 you show the ratchet on the pivot bolt. On some V6 Toyotas this might be the way but not on the 04-06 Lexus RX330. There isn't much space and so I found it best to tackle this pivot bolt from under the vehcle using a long 12mm 12 pt socket. Using a long socket provides clearance from the pully in this case.

  • @Katsoup98

    I'm currently doing this on my 96 Toyota Avalon, and the procedure is exactly the same. Bolt A on the second belt I'd really difficult to reach, though, and I haven't gotten it loosened yet. I also just found out my power steering pump is leaking...

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Katsoup98 Yes that top pivot bolt is hard to get to. At least on the 96 you've got much more room to work. You can even remove the dog bone engine mount and access it from above.

    Hey! Can you explain 2:37 - I just want to be clear. You put tension on the belt with the screwdriver with one hand and tighten it with the other?

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. It's kinda difficult. I wish they made it easier.

  • @vrva3138
    @vrva3138 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you find that the crank belt is tight, don't use a screwdriver on the new belt to stretch it. It simply means you have not undone the bolt next to the alternator fully. once you fully unscrew that bolt, there is no tension on the belt at all. I found it the hard way after fiddling with the screwdriver for a while like this dude in the video. Similarly, if the steering belt is tight, lift up the tensioning bolt (not downwards) to the extreme top and then the new belt will fit easily.

    Like everyone else, very useful! Thanks! I do understand now why the one mounting bolt you did not show how to loosen but said "my ratchet is on it right now". That one is a bitch to loosen. I ended up getting a large socket with an extension attached that would fit over the end of my 3/8 ratchet to get some leverage. Finally got it.

    Great video Speedkar99! I would like to add that I had a very difficult time putting the new AC belt on because it was so tight, but after taking the adjuster bolt out and using a prybar between the CV axle housing and the bottom part of the pump, I was able to easily slip on the belt. Of course I had to use the prybar again to place the bolt back in the hole going the other direction! But I honestly couldn't have done this without your great tutorial. Great job dude.
