I saw David play at Brassy's Nightclub in Cocoa Beach, FL shortly after his release from prison. His hair was still short and he had the beginnings of his famous mustache, but he didn't look very healthy. First thing I noticed walking in were signs posted everywhere saying,"please be quiet during David's acoustic set!" He came out and announced that he was going to bring the band out and get loud after a short set of wooden music. I was immediately impressed! His vocals and playing were spot on. Everything was going great until about 30 minutes or so into the acoustic set and one of my favorites, Guinnivere. When the song hit that pause between verses, some asshat yells, "ROCK ON!!!" Crosby just stopped, and I thought, "Crap! He's gonna throw a fit and walk off!" He just sat there, looking around at the audience, and after few moments, shook his head and said, "Surfers, Sailors, and Beach Bunnies! What did I expect! Let's get the band out here and play some rock & roll!" Well, I was kinda pissed that he didn't finish the "wooden" set, but the rest of the show was great and I knew that in a few months he'd be back playing with Stills & Nash in big arenas with high ticket prices.I got to see a very memorable show in a small venue for the cost of a $15 cover and a few beers!
I ran into David in 1984-5 in Mill Valley at a supermarket, he was panhandling and asked me for some spare change. He said he wasn't broke or anything, he just needed some change. A few weeks later I saw him in a one man show in San Francisco, in an after hours club on Broadway. A very small crowd was there in a very small place. When he started playing Wooden Ship, Paul Kantner came out of the audience and joined David on stage playing and singing the song. It was rock history and I didn't have my camera. David and Paul co-wrote Wooden Ships together. David was very very over weight, like 350lbs, and his breathing was really labored, like asthma, but his singing voice was still pure and smooth as silk. don't understand why the most of you guys are hating at crosby because of his drug problems. everybody loves csn&y and i think who else would be so perfect in the crosby role in this band like himself? there are not many other musicans with this talent in the time they were founded. so we should take it as a gift for life to hear all of them singing. every human makes mistakes some of us a little more than other but thats all a private thing so don't talk about people's back if you don't know what really happens in their mind. peace
I was floored by the first CSN album. I tried to get my Gibson jazz guitar (Barney Kessel) to sound like Still's 1953 Tele (still the best use of the neck pickup in 'muffled' mode) and after that played only Telecasters (well maybe the occasional Strat).
Still mad at David Crosby for his reckless words, attitudes and back stabbing incredible friendships over 50 years old ..... but, aside from his screw-ups HE WAS AN INCREDIBLE COMPOSER, COMPETENT MUSICIAN & BEAUTIFUL BARITONE / TENOR vocalist .... missed all but for his music loved on CDs ... we bid him farewell. very good take. I remember seing them mid july 83, Stephen on coke, jumping all over and changing guitar for every song... David had an old Stratocaster and looked like a ghost... I think two members of recently disbanded Eagles were in the band... Timothy B Schmidt , I think
What "dark side"? I didn't see any "dark side" on this video. I thought that they all sounded great ... except for all of the mix on Stills's guitar. Sounded like it had too much of some kind of pedal and/or chorus AND I LOVE STEPHEN STILLS! I grew up listened and learning form all of his albums He uses this mix a lot when playing electric. I'm not crazy about it but it's very easy to look past it when Stephen is playing and singing.
Michael Finnegan got a great mention after his fantastic solo playing and singing on Barrel of Pain at this concert. It's posted on TH-cam but his mention at the end unfortunately was cut out. His solo starts at about 4:45..
I saw David touring with his own group in Minneapolis, late Seventies or early Eighties in a bar. He stood stock still, stage right, playing and singing (not very well) with a 1000 mile straight-ahead stare. You knew he was messed up.
Saw them on this tour. My wife looked at me and said, "How wasted is Crosby?" You could tell he was very drug dependent. Glad he straighten out his life.
What drug-naive folks need to understand is that someone can be functional, or even exemplary, in certain areas of his/her life (e.g. musical performance and improvisation), and still be a drop dead junkie propped up on dope. If the addict keeps going full bore, the shit does eventually hit the fan. That happened to Crosby about a year after this concert, when coked out of his mind, he tried to pass through a TX airport with a loaded revolver and a briefcase full of assorted powders. Now that's reality.

Please lady's and gentlemen this is just the BEST cream of the crop or top-notch, of course there were drugs I know is wrong and all, but well lets party no?
I love how elderly hippy Crosby (earth to David: you needn't end every spoken sentence with "man") says his generation was wonderfully in tune with nonsense about JFK's murder.
Corsby LIVE between 1978 and 1985 was a very interesting ans strange experience....he sometimes would nod off right in the middle of a song.....some says he was high on Coke..others just weed..others a mix of things..check out his video frokm SanFrancisco 1979 (sometimes labeled as brooklyn College) but hhis eyes were closed the whole show..stil he managed to sing grewat songs...the Croz is like Keith richards...nothing stops him!
always been looking at that 12 string of his. On the '73 Byrds reunion lp. What make is it? And I readily agree, Crosby is a much under rated songwriter and stellar musician and along with Art Garfunkel , one of the virtuosic harmony singers of of pop.
Steven Stills is gifted He has been around for years I remember him ; many years ago, the record " super session" Steven Stills Mike Bloomfield and Al cooper Thats over 40 years ago ' Great recording.
Uuhhh, excuse me but if David Crosby is so out of it, why does this performance sound so amazing. I mean he is 1/3 of the group both on guitar and vocals and pardon me if I am mistaken, but his voice is in the mix and he is singing perfectly. His form of concentration has always been like this. I have seen him perform about 25 times since 1964 starting with The Byrds and he has always had that kind of intensity and always been 100% in the music. Speculation of this sort is very unattractive.

don't understand why the most of you guys are hating at crosby because of his drug problems. everybody loves csn&y and i think who else would be so perfect in the crosby role in this band like himself? there are not many other musicans with this talent in the time they were founded. so we should take it as a gift for life to hear all of them singing. every human makes mistakes some of us a little more than other but thats all a private thing so don't talk about people's back if you don't know what really happens in their mind. peace
the key board player is excellent
I was floored by the first CSN album. I tried to get my Gibson jazz guitar (Barney Kessel) to sound like Still's 1953 Tele (still the best use of the neck pickup in 'muffled' mode) and after that played only Telecasters (well maybe the occasional Strat).
Simply astonishing!! Thanks for posting
You win today's finger for mis-titling a video. Way to mislead! ;)
I saw CSN, sometimes with Neil Young, 4 or 5 times thru the late 70s & 80s, when Crosby's problems were near their worst. Always sounded great.
GBjj
The bass line though 👌 😍
Those eyes at the beginning are the look of a man who is coming up hard on some sort of upper.
Comin’ up my ass they just landed a punch straight to the dome, thats the face of a man realizing he clocked in for work.
You made similar eyes in True Romance.
@@Sound8VisionVibe .. He said EYES, and he is dead on correct you fucking moron
Odin sounds like a bully who drank to much coffee at his McDonald's job after a nite of crystal.
Nevertheless that incomparable trio of voices. And the writing! Immortal.
damn stills nailing it on the opening line!
very good take.
I remember seing them mid july 83, Stephen on coke, jumping all over and changing guitar for every song... David had an old Stratocaster and looked like a ghost... I think two members of recently disbanded Eagles were in the band... Timothy B Schmidt , I think
Am I the only one who thinks that those two opening lines, First Steven's super long, then David's short one, went perfectly together?
Who is Drumming ?
I’m assuming Joe Vitale was on this tour.
Thanks for you for the input
My favorite thing about this is that for most of the song Graham doesn't even pretend to play guitar.
Cheshire Moon He does a bit.
Maybe he only plays when he has a part to play. They do have three guitarist, and two are noted for their ability.
That's a good thing because he is by far the weakest guitarist of the three.
Best performance of that tune ever
Michael Finnegan got a great mention after his fantastic solo playing and singing on Barrel of Pain at this concert. It's posted on TH-cam but his mention at the end unfortunately was cut out. His solo starts at about 4:45..
Good keyboard player and drummer
I saw David touring with his own group in Minneapolis, late Seventies or early Eighties in a bar. He stood stock still, stage right, playing and singing (not very well) with a 1000 mile straight-ahead stare. You knew he was messed up.
Quite simply an AMAZING PERFORMANCE, if you ask me !
Lol, Crosby's like 'Fuck I'm high...almost through this...'
ı still love and creazy about them! since 1973..
Saw them on this tour. My wife looked at me and said, "How wasted is Crosby?" You could tell he was very drug dependent. Glad he straighten out his life.
He is lit up!!!! Really it is sad. I don’t think he even knows what planet he is on..
Carol Thomas That year, he was right out of things...Still did the job.
Wow. That was amazing. Has to be their prime time. Especially Stephen. He was RIPPING!
Croz isn't drug addled now and will be releasing his latest album "Lighthouse" everywhere Oct. 21, 2016! #DavidCrosby
James DeWeaver
James DeWeaver Lighhouse & Skytrails are both sensational Croz albums! Dynamite stuff!
skytrails absolutely killed it. masterpiece.
have to agree, best version i have ever heard.
They were all baked out of their minds on this one
What drug-naive folks need to understand is that someone can be functional, or even exemplary, in certain areas of his/her life (e.g. musical performance and improvisation), and still be a drop dead junkie propped up on dope. If the addict keeps going full bore, the shit does eventually hit the fan. That happened to Crosby about a year after this concert, when coked out of his mind, he tried to pass through a TX airport with a loaded revolver and a briefcase full of assorted powders. Now that's reality.
Graham seems like such a good dude
Steven stills is so versatile . some can only blues but this man could play well just about a
"any thing with no "gimmicks".
See "Crosby Stills Nash - Barrel of Pain" for Michael's mention at the end.
How was crosby able to sing and guitar while high? Wow.
Please lady's and gentlemen this is just the BEST cream of the crop or top-notch, of course there were drugs I know is wrong and all, but well lets party no?
I love how elderly hippy Crosby (earth to David: you needn't end every spoken sentence with "man") says his generation was wonderfully in tune with nonsense about JFK's murder.
csny did some of the most creative lyrics i ever heard
Simply...superb! Amazing performance!
One of the best!! Saw them at the Beacon in NY
the dude's a great musician...y'all grow up sometime soon
Is Sunday the end of the start of another week?????
The Acoustic live is fine with me. but you're right about the other releases, on most good nights they're way better than what has been released.
Say what you will about Crosby, he never succumbed to the blow-dried mullet.
I know you're kiddin' George. All that guitar sound and you're talkin bout the keys!
Oh, he's lit alright - but very much in control. Music is Dave's element. They sound great.
Wooden ship is a classic beyond any imagination...progressive unmatched
