I kinda gave up on social-focused games, myself. If you join a public lobby, it's always a disaster. You're always going to have some 10-year-old who just learned that shouting the n-word at people gets a reaction, you'll frequently get some creepy older guy who is flirting with teenage girls (who may or may not be of legal age), you'll often run into people who are clearly extremely drunk or high, and you'll regularly run into someone listening to loud music and forcing everyone else to listen to it too. By far the largest issue I have though is the sheer number of children, even if they're well behaved. Every time I've gone into a mini-game in Rec Room, it's been flooded with kids who are clearly under the age of 13. As a guy in his mid-40s, this just makes me feel super uncomfortable, as if I were to just go hang out at the local elementary school playground during lunch or something.

I'm probably in a very similar situation as your average viewer. Slightly older, never played any of those games for more than 15 minutes (except for Beat Saber and Blade & Sorcery, the two that cost money). I think you pretty much nailed it. One thing that I might want to add: young people have an incredibly huge amount of free time, especially in comparison to us old folks. So not only are they looking for social sandboxing games that they can spend all day every day in, they also have a lot more time to try out those games, play them a lot and write reviews. This kind of audience is just very big in numbers and free time, so it's not surprising at all that they dominate the app market.

Maybe I missed you mentioning it, but I think another really important theme to mention is that most of these are multiplayer. I personally really hesitate to buy singleplayer games unless they are exactly what I'm looking for. I want to be able to share my experience with others even if I play solo sometimes. Playing with others tends to add a whole new layer of enjoyment to games, especially in VR with a higher sense of presence compared to flatscreen games.

    • @sixtimesnine9170
      @sixtimesnine9170 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I agree. Multiplayer game also tend to have more “content” whether that’s user generated, the game itself, or just by having replayability. A lot of the single player VR games I’ve seen that are not sport type games, so far have maybe 3-10 hours of original gameplay. I’m on the Quest, and the games aren’t cheap, so having that short a playtime for the price is a turn off.

I tried Gorilla Tag when it first came out in 2021 and didn't initially get its appeal.
However, after a few days, I realized there's a lot of depth and technique behind the simple interface. Learning the maps and mastering skills like wall climbing and wall running transformed the experience. If you loved playing tag as a kid, this takes it to an extreme level!
It's also physically demanding, and I often come out of a session drenched in sweat. Unfortunately, it's now overrun by kids, which can ruin the social experience, but I still play-with the sound muted. :)

Even for someone in their 40s RecRoom is great there are definitely older people in there, just a little harder to find. You just have to find your crew. The art gallery, clubs mentioning adults, and churches are all good places to find the older group in RecRoom. The ability to create content in game is amazing. Some of the rooms are extremely detailed.

Not sure how popular it is but games like Walkabout Mini Golf have a great following, community, and tons of content to enjoy. I feel like their games need some kind of lobby system where you can meet up with people (friends or randoms) and just chat, jump in and play games. Like a hub world.

We play dungeons of eternity, walkabout mini golf and pop one together a lot. I play Asgards Wrath 2 or Skyrim vr when I play solo. Tonight though we are planning on playing drinking games in vrchat and having a night out in vr ✌️I like the fact that social games are so popular. I played rec room until population one came out then I went to population one for two years. Then Zenith came out and I’ve been on Zenith since then although I have been playing Medieval Dynasty a lot lately, but I’m still playing Zenith. One of the things that’s interesting about Zenith . Is that a lot of the players I’m playing with on my age or above and I’m 62 years old. A lot of us do not want to babysit and unfortunately, most of the games on this list make you become babysitters.

Free is popular, no doubt about it. I'm patiently waiting for deeper and more detailed VR games. I honestly feel there is a lack of creative writing leading to empty games.
I agree that 2-3 really good games per year would be great. Problem is my 2-3 might not be your 2-3, or anybody else's. Im willing to pay for quality, if these games are keeping the wheel turning, great. I am concerned about the image consumers have of VR based on the popularity of stuff like that but as a consumer myself, thats not really my lane. 🤷

Definitely more than a few VR games are popular along a generational divide. Gorilla Tag is objectively Patient Zero in this. My nephews love the game, I can’t stand it for all the same reasons you mentioned.
Just as the Silent Generation and the Boomers looked at Gen-Xers and older Millennials with more than a bit of side eye over our adaptation of video game systems like Commodore and Atari; there’s a bit of that from us at Gen-Z and Gen Alpha for probably what in all honesty is more or less the same thing.

PCVR appeals more to the older player base. Quest appeals to a more varied base, but also skews a little younger and more casual.
So when we look at what's popular in the Quest world, we're only seeing part of the whole. That part is growing faster than the rest right now, but let's not forget PCVR.
If we're gonna forget anything, it should be PSVR. As much as it breaks my heart to say it.

I definitely feel too old for VR Chat public lobbies, let alone Rec Room, Roblox or Gorilla Tag. I do love just soloing through some of the worlds created in VR Chat, although usually in PCVR than Quest. Don't think Horizon Worlds is available here. Population One is OK. Good fun for sure. Although I prefer larger maps, slower pace and more strategic play to my Battle Royale games. The building mechanic does nothing for me either.

@@matKilla9801 I second this suggestion, the map is huge and there is a solo mode out right now for it and you have to think quite a bit more to survive in showdown. In Pop1 you just need to spam builds and peek to shoot, they have kneecapped their flying mechanic by letting weapon damage and time to kill get out of control. In Showdown at least you can survive while parachuting for the most part and the time to kill with guns is not as ridiculous as Pop1

Looking back, it would be great to get some more LoneEcho, HL Alyx stuff...in the i think my nr.1 experience has been Skyrim (with all the mods) And i fear games for standalone will be going the Android games style fast, meaning, a whole lot of crap! with a few, kinda fun ones. But i guess it's just not time for the big titles to go standalone, the ones that have tried, MetalOfHonor, AssassinsCreed for instance, just haven't seen the returns they probably wanted and also shown that VR is a different build entirely vs pancake.

All these "social" games are toxic kids and teens. Only one that has much fewer of those types is the Pokerstars Vegas Infinite which luckily has a mute function too.
I think my main issue as an adult is most of the games are cartoon looking or original release Skyrim type graphics with the sharp angles and edges. So far the only one I play regularly that I love is No Mans Sky via link to PC. I can fly around in that with all 3D freedom of movement without a problem.
Some of them like Asgards Wrath 2 have messy movement where you move too quickly so when you come to a stop it throws off your equilibrium. Their fix is the teleport movement which is just messy and buggy.

What a depressing list for vr. "Free" game with micro-transactions.

VR gaming has moved towards 'mobile phone like gaming' and basically killed any prospect of proper mainsteam AA(A) VR games development. I know this would happen the moment Zuck bought Oculus as he has some vandetta against windows and PC in general. I guess he wants to create it's own Apple like closed garden absent of competition in it. A great potential wasted, such a shame :(

Unfortunately aaa VR was never in the cards. Pcvr just doesn't make nearly enough money

@@Gamingwithmatteo311 Well, some AAA devs do support VR like Asobo with it's MSFS 2024 sim coming out this year, but I do agree, no exclusive PCVR game on horizon. I believe FB's main mistake was to abandon PCVR "Rift" crowd as most of us consisted of older gen PC gamers with money to burn on new exciting PCVR titles which sadly never came. Alyx kind of games had a potential to take VR on another level, but sadly AA(A) publishers didn't want to take a gamble with VR and still don't when there is easy low risk money to be made with pancake games

Free + Kids + cartoons = disappointment 😞 I am just glad VR is becoming popularized in any way possible, even if it's something I personally think is trash.

Big pass on the pre teen toxic worlds of VrChat, Gorilla Tag, Rec Room, Roblox. It’s all junk….Among Us is so fun…with the right group…but your more likely to be playing with racist 10 years olds than adults

These games all suck and the reason they are the "top" games is because its where all the children go

It's what most people start out with VR, people branch out from these games pretty quickly.
