Great video. Local knowledge is important & planting trees is key. Trees can change the microclimate. More trees = more rain, and watershed is restored, more water stays on the land. We need more trees, globally, to stop climate change and to produce more healthy food.

The worst about the modern agriculture is not about the chemicals, the destruction of the soils or the seeds companies. The worst effect is the loss of all traditional techniques and knowledge forged for hundreds of years, to adopt one model.
Thanks to people like Dr Chris Reij things are changing. Hope much will catch this train.

Mother nature does not like to be naked, for all those who don't understand this comment I will explain. In nature you hardly see productive land bare, the land should always be covered. Covered land preserve moister, moister allows things to grow. Growing plants provides a nutrient rich soil.

This video is so inspiring, we europeans often think africa is just a bottomless hole, you send money but you do not accomplish anything. This shows that africa has sooo much potential and it can be done with little capital. Not only revitilising the desert but also local communities and trying to stop climate change. I while ago I read a lot of research papers about organic matter in the soil and their impact on the lands fertility and I made some (admitedly not very scientific) estimates how much carbon could be stored if only a small percentage of savannah or desert regions could become "green". In a single hectar (100 x 100 meter) you can store about 30 t of pure carbon if not more (as I've said it wasn't very scientific, I am a lay person, it could be more it could be less, but I would be surprised if I was too far off). 30 t of carbon is the equivalent of 110 t of co2. Just think about the potential if we would do this on 100 Mio ha, which isn't unrealistic at all, it would still only be a small percentage of the available land.
It gives me so much hope not just for the climate, but for the african people.

The beauty of this is that the technique is simple, requiring no special tools, doable, and the people who are directly affected are involved with pride and sense of ownership; that is why the project is successful.👏🏼👏🏾👏🏾❤️

The real problem is that too many elections and legislation are bought. It is probably the greatest risk to democracy in the USA today. 'Ike" warned us about an overreaching Military -Industrial Complex and his credentials as a conservative were pretty good.

It's an old forgotten technic used by a farmer called Yacouba Sawadogo from Burkina Faso. He decided to use it in his village and created a 15 ha forest in a desertic place. Then people started to come back to live in the village since they were able to grow things and have enough to live.
Now this technic is applied in many countries with the same conditions thanks to this pioneer. This kind of guys are more important than any politician or big corporation..

It is highly educative. Every one should learn to plant fruit bearing trees every where on both sides of roads and around the viilages and make India a fruit country for this all the young youths contribute their might. For information I love the nature, in all it's forms, I started to beg, bow, for the last about 50-60 when from I was a young boy many people must have taken interest, when I was traveling in that area it had no trees, baren; now after so many years I had a chance to travel in that area I came across the wonderful changes. I thank God.

+Hussein Ali DNA doesn't work that way. Any human being can make the conscious decision to help another, as long as they are aware of their ability to do so. The fact that I haven't seen rich african people helping poor people do so, doesn't mean that it doesn't happen either. Although people such as Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela do come to mind.
Another thing, Dr. Reij is not (by European standards) a rich man who does this work out of charity. This is his job. Though it is great that he has chosen a line of work which actually helps people. Most Europeans (most people in general) choose jobs that help themselves.
I don't think you should generalize Africans and say they are all egoists. The African situation is a lot different from Europe, and I have met many Europeans who are a lot more egoistic than many African people that I have met.

This kind of torrid region need to apply first step on how too gather organic matter into the most less cost and highly effective way , is to plant cactus edible for ruminants and people . This plant don't need proper watering but absorb water from the atmosphere and it simply convert mineral sands into soft soil humus . The massive plantation of cactus will replinish the soil by grinding it and disperse it back to the utilizable land to invite more earthworms on reproduction that contribute soil turnover and other insects like ants and more animals to conduct harmonious relation on fertilizing and moistening the soil
