    Thanks everyone for the quick response. I've given away all 5 premium membership codes for PictureThis. You can still check it out (without the premium features) if you can ignore the nag screens, and of course I'm quite happy to recommend Pl@ntNet as a free alternative.

    This is cool Jason. I used a plant ID site this summer for the first time. I didn't know there was anything like this but stumbled on to it and it helped me figure out what I planted. I didn't save the tag so forgot what it was. Amazing tool for gardeners.

    This is brilliant never even new these apps were out there. Off to download and try on my blue rose. Bought 15 years ago and no idea what it is. I think it’s one of two but this might be the answer! Thanks Jason.

      Best luck! So far I haven't found an app that will drill down so specific as a cultivar of rose, but I hope they'll eventually do so.

      The best is when your government starts using it on it's own citizens but for certain applications like this it's great. I just wonder where we'll be down the line.

    The only plant you showed that I could identify myself was the mahonia! That's because I bought one for myself a couple of years ago and have it as an indoor plant. I'm happy to say it's not dead yet and actually appears to be thriving! "Not dead yet" tends to be my honest standard for my brown thumbs.

    THANKS for the wonderful job,
    About the last shot it was better to take the photo from a different angle because a stem with fruitS and a thick stem (trunk) on the background could confuse the algorithms behind the plant identificationapps.
    but it was good that overally you werent soft on grading these apps.

    Thank you for this information. Appreciate your advice which I only use Lens Google. I had another one but I discard it. Can't remember what it was about 4 yrs ago. It was a group of scientists/ agriculture or a group that will define even a foot print of a wild animal. I really can't remember the name !

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Jin. Google Lens seems fairly good at the photo matching, but the results (for me) were a bit shallow - links to external websites of varying quality. With Pl@ntNet and PictureThis, the results were formatted quite well, with common & botanical name, plant family, and even sometimes growing tips. I like them all, but I think the dedicated plant ID apps still have an edge in usability.

    Hi Jason Fire weed is a real pest over here. I live in the English Midlands it seeds everywhere. If you dig it up and break the roots it will keep going. It is a lovely flower but like dandelions it spreads by the wind.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Maudie. As with so many of these issues, it's very related to local conditions. When I first moved onto the farm (11 years ago) we had a small patch of fireweed in the front garden. I panicked a bit and dug them all out. Phew. Never saw another one again in the neighborhood until now. As I've learned in the meantime, the tall fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium) is a native pioneer species, and is rarely troublesome here like it's uglier (IMO) cousins E. hirsutum, E. ciliatum and E. brachycarpum. That may be a different story in England

    Our team used two taxonomists who specialize in ID and the major apps were 38% accurate to genus and only 27% accurate to species. Cultivar is level is not happening since they don;t have that data. Google Lens still thinks our red rex begonia is a red maple and needs an arborist to trim it.

  • @MashaB-pk8hl
    @MashaB-pk8hl หลายเดือนก่อน

    I find that photos of new foliage can result in a failure to identify. New foliage may differ from mature foliage in form and color. Cropping the image so that new foliage is excluded is one solution.
    Berry color can also affect whether or how a plant is ID’d. For example, Google Lens may have no problem identifying a plant with ripe berries but fail when the berries are still green.
    The accuracy of Google Lens might be improved if the photo had some indication of scale in the image. For example, are the adult leaves two inches or four inches long?

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm

      Thanks for the tips. I still go back to Plantnet in a pinch, and find the world flora category returns the right (or close enough) answer in the top 2 or 3 results.

    Wonder how long it´ll take them to develop the same thing for people: you take a picture of them and it shows you name, address, social security number, health status, financial status including account access data etc.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol Peter. Actually, I think there was a time when Google Glass was being marketed to individuals as eyewear, and some of those very same privacy concerns were raised. It did a lot of the stuff that Google Lens can do now, but I'm not sure if it tried to ID people. Now I think they're limiting the Glass product to enterprise use (an AI augmented workforce doesn't sound too scary, does it?)

    Do you grow any strawberries 🍓, if you do could you do a video on them.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a good point, and I probably should have spared a minute to say: plant ID apps rarely go down to cultivar level. They'll often get so far as identifying a rose as : 'Rosa chinensis' or 'Rosa x hybrida', but I already knew it was a rose. With thousands of cultivars in gardens, it really doesn't stand a chance. I'll look for an opportunity on a strawberry video.

    thanks for this! And heck yes, this is amazing technology!! Though, going to the library and getting field guides or area-based plant books will be a much missed experience in this coming age. 😢
    Plant-net has the option of identifying by part (leaf, fruit, tree bark, etc.), not sure if Google can do that, but for sure Google will ultimately win the technology war very soon. Their camera recognition r&d has too much money to lose.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that Google can win a battle purely on the technology, but they're not infallible, and sometimes they just pick the wrong functionality (think Google+ as an example). When I use PlantNet, it's focused on giving me a botanical name (which is what I want) and Google is more focused on giving me a matching search result (which still kind of results in the right answer, but I have to click though to make sure, and I'm ending up in an external website). Even if the results accuracy is similar, I'd still be inclined to prefer the usability of a dedicated plant ID app.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's an interesting point of view - I tend to think of it the opposite way: the software sharpens my own plant ID skills as I use it in the landscape. There are loads of plants I would have walked by and shrugged before, and now I can quickly ID and research them.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol. Definitely should have been less sweeping in that conclusion. When I'm looking for better evidence of progress than a plant ID app, I listen to Stephen Pinker: th-cam.com/video/yCm9Ng0bbEQ/w-d-xo.html and when I'm looking for a less optimistic / more cynical view on modernity, it's Russell Brand.

      @@billallen6109 Click on Fraser Valley Roses on about page. Then after it loads, under the Fraser Valley Rose logo, there will be a blue icon envelope. Click on that. It will take you to email.
