  • Starting as an adult doesn't have to limit you. Do whatever it takes to feel great out there. Compete, perform, feel it with all of your movement. So what if you didn't skate as a child. Go ahead and create experiences for yourself and the audience to enjoy. I started around age 30 and have only worked with coaches for about 4 years total. Just started competing at age 49, so it's not too late. So if you are older and love skating, get out there and train smart and love every moment! Be safe and Skate Happy!
    My advice (what works for me anyway):
    1. Stay hydrated! Injuries pop up immediately when I don't follow this.
    2. Listen to your body immediately & every time! The instant you feel an increase in or onset of pain, PAUSE (yes, I actually do mean EVERY time). Immediately do slow careful movements / gentle stretching if you can. Try again but only do things that don't hurt that day. If you can only skate forward and backward, do that. If you are in a class, tell them what you can /can't do. Rest and try again tomorrow. Seriously... don't do what makes you hurt. Find the cause and solve it.
    3. Condition smart... Alternate what you practice so it's not too repetitive/ not over taxing the same muscle groups (ie., don't repeat the same movement over and over and over and over like everyone else around you. Do a little of this, then a little of that.)
    4. Slowly push the most simple moves to their limit (example: how far can you lean, squat, raise, or extend without hurting? This should get better over time, not overnight)
    5. Prioritize developing coordination, flexibility, balance, posture, strength, and free flowing movement over getting obsessed with jump/spin practice, especially before your body is ready. This can mean the difference between skating for a couple years / having to take a lot of time off vs skating steadily for a lifetime.
    6. Always warm up and make warm ups enjoyable so you do them. Create a routine to favorite songs and move to the music.
    7. Stretch religiously! And always stretch warm, focusing on each muscle group. It shouldn't hurt and shouldn't be held for too long.
    8. Get really REALLY good at turns, speed, and flow because you need that to be good at jumps and spins.
    9. Do squats / other off ice training. I've been biking / doing karate for several years which has helped so much w/ knee issues & skating generally. Search up "karate horse stance"... I swear it's the secret to knee longevity, just don't go overboard with it. Biking really helps the knee (usually) for most people too.
    10. Eat well... (I don't, but it's good advice)
    Why all this??? Without flexibility, strength, and slow, steady conditioning, your body will break down alarmingly fast under the stress. You don't want to do irreparable harm to your body or do anything that keeps you AWAY from skating.
    My "practice" routine (after learning the hard way):
    Warm up with music
    Stretch (often dynamic on ice movement to music)
    Specific skills practice (5 to 15 minutes of focused repetitive practice, w/alternating skills)
    General practice to music (up to 30 min. Many connecting moves w/ occasional jumps/ spins)
    Specific skills practice (5- 15 min of reps & alternating what to work on. Ex. 5 min jumps / 5 - min spins, or spins one day / jumps another day, etc.)
    General practice again to music (up to 30 min w/ occasional jumps /spins in there)
    Specific Practice again (5 to 15 minutes
    General Practice again
    (I take some breaks in there of course and not every day looks the same)
    Stretch off ice (extensive and all muscle groups)

    Sensitive, graceful, elegant, all in relief, in nuances and in passionate red sparkling with gold, like the stars in your eyes. Nice discovery that YT suggested to me. I truly congratulate you for the softness and beauty of your know-how, a delicate and exquisite execution. Please remind me what the song is ? Maybe it’s the song in La Rivière danse/The River Dance ? This tune is well known to me, I have a memory lapse. Thank you in advance and good continuation in the execution of your different routines, figures, etc.!

      You are so kind! I look at performances like most other skaters...Some parts of this hit the mark, and others, not what I was reaching for. There's always so much to improve upon, but at least I'm having a great time along the way and learning not to be nervous.

    Currently 19 years old been skating VERY on and off for a few years but I can do some stuff (you are definitely better than me I wanna do footwork like you so badly someday). Anyways the other day I was at my rink making conversation with an older gentleman, very nice man. He was 70 years old and I could NOT keep up with him. I only had a bowl of cereal beforehand and didn’t sleep very well so I knew I was gonna get exhausted fast. Eventually I tripped on my toepick and I currently have a massive bruise on my knee 😂. Point is you absolutely cannot judge a book by its cover. That man’s endurance baffled me and your performance is just damn beautiful. Hope to skate like you one day. God bless

      Yay! Another new adult skater! Love that! And I also started around age 28 and was inspired by other skaters who were in their 40s and 50s. They were so skilled and graceful. I guess the best part of being inspired is that, you get to inspire others in time. Good luck, and I'm sure you will outdo anything I've done here. Skate Happy!

    That was so beautiful! Congratulations. 👏 So you never had dance training? You're a natural. I wish I could've started earlier, I started five seasons ago at 44. Did you take private lessons from the start? I've only had group lessons until now.

    • @laurawic
      @laurawic  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much!! No, I never did dance and didn't really do sports as a kid. Started skating at 28, mostly in group lessons then skated for about 15 years without lessons. Just started private and group lessons again about 2 years ago. You can learn after age 40! You probably already know all this, but keep listening to your body and tackle new skills in bites you can manage. Stretch and do off ice work. Condition your body to handle this stuff. Strength train/ train for both endurance and fast bursts of energy. Doesn't have to be more than a few minutes a day. On Ice track your progress by measuring it. Count time and reps. film and measure angle of lean, angle of arms and free leg. I find measuring progress motivating. Good luck and enjoy your ice time!!!

    To any adult figure skaters out there who have skated in their teens and 20's then tried again as someone w little older. Is it just me or is your body intrinsically different in "middle age". Nothing obvious in terms of strength or flexibility etc, but when you try to bloody skate suddenly all the rules you could break and still do the spin or jump you can no longer break, and your body is this seemingly sort of demonic influence that makes everything 10 times harder requiring 10 times the effort in technique, for 1/10 the result! 😡 lol

    • @laurawic
      @laurawic  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It does seem that way, but there may be ways to manage. Stretching every muscle group plus regular cross training has changed everything, at least for me. I don't ignore pain now, and immediately change things up, stretch, or rest. I try not to do too many reps and vary the moves in general. When I started skating at 28 I was getting injured constantly because I didn't know how unconditioned my body was for this and did too much at once. Now at 50 I'm in better shape than at 20 when I was not flexible not doing sports. Strangely some things are easier now even though I'm trying much harder things. Keep trying new strategies everyone. Don't give up!!!
