Foreground Blur Tutorial: The Easiest DOF Effect | Take & Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

- When you think about depth of field, it’s usually connected with background blur and that makes a lot of sense. In photography, we use background blur to make our subjects stand out from their backgrounds and give a sense of depth to images. But if your goal is just to create depth in your images, there is an alternative to background blur: foreground blur.
Foreground blur is always an option even when background blur is not. For example, when your subject is standing against a wall. As photographer Gavin Hoey shows in this video, understanding the basic photography principles behind foreground blur make the opportunities to use it pop up more often.
Gavin sets up three different studio portrait ideas, each creating foreground blur in a different way. First, Gavin shows how any wall can be used to create a depth of field effect simply by framing it into the foreground of your photos. Next, Gavin uses fabric in his foreground and finally, it’s a quick trip into the garden to fetch some twigs and branches. With a little bit of careful studio lighting with flash, Gavin turns some twigs into a stunning fine art foreground blur image.
Gavin Hoey is a freelance photographer, writer, and trainer of all things photographic. Gavin has a real passion for sharing his photography and Photoshop knowledge. In 2008, he started recording and uploading video tutorials to TH-cam. His work is regularly featured in photography magazines, websites, and videos.

Gavin, your energy and demeanour is always so infectious. Even when I know what you are teaching, I can’t help but watch your videos. They always cheer me up!
Don’t worry, Gavin. We’ll “stick” with you
I see what you did there 😉
I use object in foreground often. Items such as water bottles, mirrors, lights, flowers, wedding veils. :)
another great session Gavin. What a treat. Appreciate your videos so much
Great photographer, great model, great video! Thanks
Wow! I really love the simplicity of using the fabric - the results are great and so is Gavin as a teacher. So many inventive ideas - thank you!!

Brilliant tutorial again Gav. And Cara is a fantastic addition to your videos, very beautiful model ❤
Always comes up with great ideas Gavin! Now I need to go and find me some twigs 😁👍
Good to have Cara back for a shoot. Liked the overlapping backdrops at the beginning and the light tent effects. Well done to All !

gavin ur the best teacher .
Thank you 😊
What a good idea, I am going branch collecting now.
Hi Gavin, I went to a dollar store and bought a few bundles of dried spikes and use it in occasions to shoot a model through the spikes 😀 the are around 1 inch wide at the thickest part but since I have many of them I can cover sufficient for a cool look, just like you use the twigs 😀
this could defifinitely be the one for me to try out :-)
Go for it Kevin 👍
Hello Gavin, thanks for sharing another greate video.
that was very useful brother that adds more ideas for photo shoots for sure thank you and that model is a beauty good choice.

@@GavinHoey Thanks Gavin will do and the same to you too
As usual really interesting.
Thanks Paul 👍
Thanks, Gavin. Great video as always. You frequently mention Nik Software, I have the latest two versions and was hoping you may be able to point me towards decent training or guidance for using them. Maybe convince some of your Adorama cohorts to create some tutorials for us! Thanks for all you do!
1/2000 shutter speed, is it because a slower speed like your cameras sync speed would let to much light in making the photo not as blurry? Or is it something else?
Awesome video!!! Can’t wait to try this.
Yep, that's basically it. super wide apertures (like f/1.4) let in loads of ambient light which is recorded by the camera along with the flash and can cause issues such as image ghosting, colour shifts and exposure issues.
Interesting, thanks Gavin!!
great video
Very good. But you can use a gobo mask with a green filter in the background
nice
Hi Gavin, great video. Quick question, I am a complete novice and was wondering why that shutter speed?? Don't you usually have it set at 1/125 1/250 ??
It's all about the ambient light. Super wide apertures (like f/1.4) let in loads of ambient light which is recorded by the camera along with the flash and can cause issues such as image ghosting, colour shifts and exposure issues. HSS flash (High Speed Sync) allows me to exceed the standard shutter speed for flash (1/250th in this case) but to learn more I made a whole video about it th-cam.com/video/mRF7ocz8K5E/w-d-xo.html
Can you tell what your viewing the images on please on the stand
That's my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 Tablet/ Laptop.
Do you shoot in hss?
Yes indeed. HSS was essential in this light for wide aperture flash photography.
Just wondering why you used 1/2000 shutter speed ?
Because super wide apertures (like f/1.4) let in loads of ambient light which is recorded by the camera along with the flash and can cause issues such as image ghosting, colour shifts and exposure issues. This short video explains everything you need to know th-cam.com/video/mRF7ocz8K5E/w-d-xo.html
Wow! That makes sense, thank you Gavin!
Why 2000th?
Because super wide apertures (like f/1.4) let in loads of ambient light which is recorded by the camera along with the flash and can cause issues such as image ghosting, colour shifts and exposure issues. High speed sync (HSS flash) allows us to go beyond the limits of normal flash and shutter speeds... This video explains why th-cam.com/video/mRF7ocz8K5E/w-d-xo.html
Are you in HSS?
Yes I was. HSS was essential in this light for wide aperture flash photography.
@@GavinHoey Thanks. ! am sure you said but i must have missed it. Sorry. And thanks for another video, awesome as always.
Cara. Now known as Twiggy...
Why don't the models smile during the photo session ?
