In every one of your videos I learn something that I wasn't aware I was doing right or wrong. The great thing is that I get to learn from an experienced professional willing to share his knowledge (something not many photographers are willing to do). In this episode you show preproduction and shooting with the final image in mind, knowing that you will do post, so it is ready for post. Also this post was more elaborate than previous ones. Brilliant episode? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great work you two. I often try to create similar portraits in my home studio after watching your vieos. I have a high key shoot coming up in Feb as a result of your video.😄
Excellent as usual Gavin, you make your post processing look so easy, us mere mortals (me) have to replay that part of the video 25 times to understand it!
I'm trying to learn more about lighting placement and I have a long way to go to be like Gavin. But if there's one thing where I have his skill, it's in how to fold a fabric and throw it in the corner. In that test, I would get an A+. 😁
Love it! The editing n post processing part of photography is something I just never end up doing and most of my images are left stored in the hard drive. Motivated to get to it now
Love the folding of the fabric and the backwards throw to unfold it in the corner. Do you shop at Primark to practice the technique. As usual a great vid.
I'd love to know more about creating the fine art feel rather than just applying a filter, how to build the look in PS etc. hope you could consider that for a future video Gavin. As ever, great videos
Gavin this is another great video on flash photography and I have learned so much from watching your videos. I love the way you handle the post-processing steps and un-complicate things. I would like to see more post post processing incorporated in your videos if that is possible.
Hi Gavin! Loved seeing the post processing work. Is there any particular reason why you didn't add a layer mask to mask off the background from Chloé's arm?
Hi Nicole. A mask would remove the texture but also the colour and (because of the layer blending mode) the contrast. Give it a go and you'll see what I mean 😉
Clever Freya! I thought those Cranes were brilliant! You'd best make her "Super-Amazing Freya" from now on. I make greeting cards, but I've never tried Origami. I don't have the time, as Photography is my number One Obsession, and Tuesday evenings are Camera Club evenings...you get the drift. 🙂
This is so good, thanks Gavin and the whole team. I wish I would know how to use Photoshop, tried an online class some time ago, but that didn’t work out to be honest. Not complaining, it was probably my own fault, but so far I haven’t found a good yet easy (online) training to learn Photoshop.
I have learned allot watching your videos so thank you. I realize who Chloe reminds me of now Lucy Lawless who played Xena warrior princess both beautiful elegant women!
Since you asked for a comment; I need to try this using my dog as a model, in front of a cartoon background. ...Anything to make the youtube algorithm happy, so we can see more of your videos :)
Nice to meet you both on Saturday in Hammersmith, was disappointed not to be chosen to hold your flash, wasn’t able to tell you that I’ve held a flash for Joe McNally so have experience 😂 p.s. Gaving is taller in real life than he appears on TH-cam, must be the compression of video !
Curious, why did you paint color on the backgrounds rather than mask it out? I gather it is to leave some of the background image colour and texture on Chloe for the sake of blending.
When it comes to background replacement and such, I'm very inexperienced. I'm wondering why you sampled a color for her skin rather than creating a mask to just take the effect off of her altogether?
A mask is the logical way to go and you're not the first (and won't be the last) to ask. The mask is a remove all tool, so yes the unwanted texture disappears but as the layer is also a color, the warm tone would disappear too. Finally the he layer blending mode is also adding contrast, so a mask would remove the local contrast. The best advice I can give you is to try the texture over any image and compare masking vs painting.
@GavinHoey that makes sense and kind of goes along with what I was thinking as I was asking. Thanks for clearing that up. Really enjoy your videos and have learned a ton from you over the last couple of years. Although, I still forget to turn the one elevated strobe on more than I care to admit. Hahaha
Would it be easier for the model and assistant to use a big sheet instead of this fan? The small exit of the fan does not move a mass of air but is very powerful for small spots… and not good for the eyes…
Yes I could but the result would look odd. A mask would remove the texture but also the colour and (because of the layer blending mode) the contrast. Give it a go and you'll see what I mean 😉
Good question. Because if I just masked away the texture I'd also remove the color and contrast of the texture. Painting over the texture layer with a matching colour removed the texture but keeps everything else.
@@GavinHoey I think the better way to this is to separate color and texture. This way in addition to work non-destructively, You'll have more control over each of them. :)
Hi Alan. A mask would remove the texture but also the colour and (because of the layer blending mode) the contrast. Give it a go and you'll see what I mean 😉
Thank you, I think I understand now. If you used a layer mask she would have looked separated from the picture and with the color of the flash rather than the brownish tone of the background texture or the ethereal feel of the foggy woods.
Love the videos with some post processing at the end. Something I am terrible at, but these types of videos are great for quick and easy(ish) ideas.

Thank you! I've always erased the texture but could never get it to work right. LOVE the idea of painting the texture layer to even it out.

Beautiful work again Gavin. Enjoyed seeing the editing side of the shoot 👍🙂
Excellent as usual Gavin, you make your post processing look so easy, us mere mortals (me) have to replay that part of the video 25 times to understand it!
I learned quite a few methods and outcomes I can take a stab at with my backgrounds. It's a keeper for me.

That's an essential skill in my book Danny 🤣
Gavin, you are the best small studio photographer
Wow, the beginning got me all hyped up. This is guna be cool.
I just did this the other day. And use GavTrain's flurry overlays!
Those are awesome. I see them popping up all over the place...at least I think can see them 😉
Love it! The editing n post processing part of photography is something I just never end up doing and most of my images are left stored in the hard drive. Motivated to get to it now
I always enjoy your videos, Gavin! Thanks for the included texture. I often use the textured studio background one from a few years ago!
Thanks for the comment, enjoy the free texture 👍
Love this stuff! Thank you Gavin!
All very interesting, informative, entertaining, and above all thought provoking. Thank you.
Amazing work as always Gavin. Also need to also give credit to how fun you always make photography!
Thank you and having fun should always be the most important bit of photography.
Love the folding of the fabric and the backwards throw to unfold it in the corner. Do you shop at Primark to practice the technique.
As usual a great vid.
I am so surprised to see you posting a video on Monday Gavin! Surprised but happy 🙂👍. Always love to watch and learn from your videos Gavin.
Me too! Usual service will be resumed next time 😉
Absolutely brilliant video, as usual with the equally informative Gavin and entertaining too.👍
Awesome job "folding" the red fabric at the end!
Always loved watching your videos Gavin, both here (Adorama) and your own channel. Really inspiring stuff! :)

Nice video! It’s great to see the entire process from the photo shoot to the post-processing. Good work! 🙂
I really enjoy your lessons, Gavin! 👍
Who did the paper folding to make the red crane birds? They worked really well. Another great video - Thanks Gavin.
That was the amazing Freya's handy work 😁

amazing simplicity
Great work Gavin and Chloe and Sam of course.
Great video. Would the first image have looked better if the strings were erased?
That was the original plan but I actually preferred the strings in. If was ever to revisit this I'd 100% go bigger on the strings 😉
Brilliant Gavin
Love this
This was fabulous. This is a topic that I've always been curious about. You make photoshop a much friendlier place to work!
That's great video for portrait photo edit beginner. Thanks Gavin👍
Thankss
Stunning work and so much fun to watch and to be inspired by. Thank you for sharing 😊
Good job Gav!
So cool, thanks for sharing. Perhaps do a few more videos about post processing? Really enjoyed the video and great images.
Nice! Thank you for all the great ideas and methods, over the years, Gavin!
You make everything look so easy...a truly helpful video..thanks 🙂

Great video Gavin,, impressive result, informative content
Thanks John 👍
This was excellent, loved hearing the thought process you went through.
Suoer video, as always. I Should try more Adjustment layers. And, Poor Chloe - being tormented by the dreaded Leaf-Blower once more ! Well done to All
Funny thing is Alan, in the summer the little leaf blower is the best thing ever, apparently 😉
Thank TH-cam do much ❤
wow , my best duo is here....!
Great video. I enjoyed seeing the post production.
Brilliant as always 👏👏😀
I always love your videos Gavin because they always make my day
Another triumph Sir Gavin, liked this one very much...

Hey Gavin, why grey background is better than the white or black and what problems can occurs with these colours?
Thank you.
Just out of curiosity for a studio newbie here…what would be the issues you get using a white or black background instead of grey?
I'm curious about why you don't use a mask on the layer and paint it with black to remove the unwanted texture effect?
Why don't you use select subject and invert the selection for the first texture? I use it all the time with a grey background and it works great!
Also it's much easier to just hold ALT when the regular brush is selected to get instant access to the color picker!
Great content as always but my favourite bit is when you decide the red fabric isn’t folding and just throw it away 😂😂

I have a very small space which lens would be good to capture full body images?
Curious, why did you paint color on the backgrounds rather than mask it out? I gather it is to leave some of the background image colour and texture on Chloe for the sake of blending.
Fun video

I do not see a option to pick Uk in the drop down box for price of shipping. What am I missing ??

Love to see this, but is it not simpler to select her, reverse selection and then past the background? So you have no texture on her skin.
That's an option but my way works for me, so that's how I rolled 😉
@@GavinHoey i understand that. But I tought that i maybe forgot something in editing

Could you have also used a mask to take the texture/background artifacts off Chloe?
Yes I could but the result would look odd. A mask would remove the texture but also the colour and (because of the layer blending mode) the contrast. Give it a go and you'll see what I mean 😉
@@GavinHoey Thank you for the explanation. That makes a lot of sense.

How tall is your studio?
U Can use white background trust me it comes down to how good u are I. Photoshop
I'm wondering, after adding the texture, you didn't simply add a mask and remove it from her arm and face with a brush?
I was wondering this as well
