- I will go through the process & checks that are carried out during a Mot test. You will see how vital these checks are for your safety & others safety.
Most people are unaware of most faults that would be picked up during an mot test so be safe & make sure your car has a current Mot test certificate.
I had a car fail on _"steering column universal joint worn"_ . I'm an ex-mechanic. I took car home and returned an hour later on my bike with the said joint, plonked it on the desk in reception, and asked what was wrong with it. They had to admit _nothing_ . Many of these places give fails to get a job, or rather a non-job. MoT tests should be done by independent depots who have nothing to gain or lose by the results.
Would you generally say trust the ones more that don't charge for re-tests?
This is how it is done in France. All cars are mot'd every 2 years and commercial vehicles are tested for emissions yearly.
I don't trust garages,,,
Go to a place that does MOT only. Or place Halfords. I went for a MOT garages that are so busy they don't check to this level. Specifically underneath the car
A tip for you all if your skeptical about garages is to look at 'council MOT test centres' in your area, they do not carry out repairs so they have no vested interest in failing you. When I found out about mine 5 years ago, I've never looked back and never failed since.
Note: Offside / OS = Drivers side aka Right side./ Nearside / NS = Passenger Side aka Left side.

Just wanted to say thanks for the video Mark, passed my demo test today after having a break from testing for four years and watched this a few times to help refresh my memory, very helpful 👍🏻
You start going on as strict and thorough as that nobody ain't gonna go to your garage lol. Been in it a while and never seen anything as silly as this. Just a publicity stunt this is.
@@MenaceMenuPat cant lie just seems forced, when he's "checking the engine bay" and "checking for leaks" by staring at the wipers I clicked off
More nervous about my car's MOT than I was about my goddamn driving test!
Really good video. It will certainly help me maintain my car to the mot standard as I am a DIY mechanic.
Holy crap! Your mot inspections for vehicle inspections put to shame what we do here in the US. In fact they're 11 states that don't require any annual inspection at all. This was a fascinating video. I really enjoyed it. It's nice to know some governments do a very thorough job on safety. Thanks for sharing!
The Mot isn’t a good thing, thousands of cars fail every week for stupid reasons that wouldn’t compromise the safety or reliability of a car leaving a lot of drivers either without a car or very expensive repair bills, my dads car failed it’s mot recently on a engine light being on, shock absorbers being corroded, one of the back seats being loose and a tiny crack in the windscreen (that wasn’t causing any visibility issues). Cost him close to £600 to put right and he’s pissed about it. I don’t get why we need all this extreme testing done when you guys have been fine for years without needing anything
@@hitachi42inchtvsarepowerco79 surely the engine light Indicated a present fault ? And a loose seat ? Would you really want to be a passenger in a car that has a defective rear seat ?
It’s not even a high standard in the U.K. compared to like japan
@@hitachi42inchtvsarepowerco79 it’s actually hard to legally fail a car
This guy is being abit thorough cause hes making a video. Its not as bad as this. My car passed its test without Reverse lights last week. They only test essentials, Tyres,Brakes,Steering, horn etc. Dont be fooled.
Hi Mark. Thank you for this excellent video. There were a number of items that I was not aware of. Helps a lot for checking my car prior to its MOT
Hi Mark, I had my demonstration a couple of days ago. Passed with just a couple of minors. I just wanted to thank you for your invaluable routine video. I couldn't have done it without you dude. Clear and consise demonstration. And still the only full and current rutine on TH-cam. BTW, the minors where, not checking the rear number plate lights (which I disputed) and lock to lock while on turnplates. Thanks again. Peter
What is the duration of the course
How very interesting to watch modern test with all the emission/computer/automation/on line systems. I can compare to many [50] years ago when it was much more pencil & paper. [+ a test result sheet that looked like a proper CERTIFICATE].
Great video Mark, Very informative, well done.
Really useful & informative stuff 👍
Very interesting to get an insight of what is involved when my car goes for its mot. Thank you
Thanks Mark! next year im gonna bring my car over to you!
Hi its good to see this all the checks you can do at home apart from the emissions the government makes a mint out of this test but safety is key an less u got a car that is over 40 years old and then no mot test is required
Great video Mark, I’ve just passed my Mot, I’m due to do my demo test in a couple of weeks. I’ve found this video very helpful to the way I inspect a car. Thanks for taking the time to show us how it’s done. All the best for the future.
I do emissions last so I can check exhaust system before hand
If it fails he doesn't have to do the other tests
very thorough tests, the MOT tester is really strong to move the whole car by tugging on the wheels with his bare hands
Brilliant video cheers, will help anyone doing their mot test
1) Security of bumpers not inspected 2) operation of steering tilt is not a part of the inspection 3) side windows were left in the open position prior to logging on the test therefore at the time of test not inspected for excessive tinting . 4) brake pipes or hoses are allowed to foul so no need to check for as they are not a failure nor an advise 5) engine must be off before jacking up the vehicle as this could cause warning lights to appear on the dashboard other than that not a bad test
not great though was it? headlamp aligner switch shouldn't be touched unless it fails...o/s/f and n/s/r wheels not spun to check bearing noise....no lock to lock check with assistant while car was in the air before it was jacked up .... 1.6mm for pads should be 1.5mm (slip of the tongue i'm sure) but finally car should have failed for items hanging on the mirror ... good job it was a training test
ken fiorentini , headlamp levelling check is now a part of the test so it should be touched. Wheels should never be spun they should only be "rotated" there is a difference as one will establish mot minimum criteria and the other a mere service advice . Pads can never be a fail for wear unless there is metal to metal visual evidence as proving 1.5mm is impossible and therefore a subjectable argument . Items hanging in the rear view mirror are not a fail as it all depends on the height of the driver . He/she may still be able to see correctly and adequately and a fail is only warranted if the view is seriously affected
@@jagvirsodhi6783 this is straight from the manual "If driver’s beam aim controls are fitted, you should test the beam aim without altering the control setting. If this would result in failure for beam aim being too low, you should re-check the beam aim with the control set at its ‘highest’ position."
@@MotorwiseBromley headlamp level switch is part of the test although should be returned to its original position before headlamp aim check
1 security of bumper and body panels are testable 2 the steering column should be in before any check 3 window switches should not be touched test as presented
I like the emissions test on my 1972 Hillman Avenger: Does it smoke? No. Pass.
Thanks for this video am learning more from this i had my 4th mot training yesterday and I signed in on my login details and I was writing it down what was failed on the car and was dangerous on the road the customer said it passed from his local garage customer thought my supervisor put the car back on ramp lift it up and showed him the faults and he was shocked
Always do the job right its about life safety first
I will note whole vin and try find second one to compare... Thank you Guy. ;)
Brilliant video however wheel bearing roughness not checked, no need to have the engine running while it's jacked up, also inhaled fumes whilst checking the n/s/r suspension.
He check the wheel bearing roughness while checking the tires
I've never seen a garage do all the pre check malarkey
Noticed you bypassed the engine speed measurement.on immisions test . should have.said you had the option to by pass.which the program on the screen gives you the option. As you probably no the inspector will be observing that you are paying attention to the on screen instructions.as you said at the begining of your video you are not authorised yet.just a small tip .as a tester of 30 years.your doing a good job.
great informative video! I am a Dutch mechanic and MOT (APK) tester aswell, and i was wondering how an english MOT is performed. The pre inspection check, is that mandatory? In the netherlands once I (or other MOT testers) pass or fail a car, there is a possibility that the road safety institute will come and check the car over. basically seeing if i did my job correctly. i was wondering if that's also the case in the UK?
I can say he was extremely thorough on the test and the Gov might love him for that. On the other side, I saw my friends car been moted and......leaves a lot to be desired.
And what qualifies you to say that?
Your mate happens to work for a garage and knows the tester?!😂
Best mot video on TH-cam
Why are some garages passing vehicles when the car reg plate is illegal thought they changed the rules to include car regs
they shouldnt be passing vehicles that are illegal in the first place. most likely a dodgy mot test centre
@@michaelde-sousa6413 I agree
They please them selves on good days bad days we need more work for garage days.
Because a number plate doesn’t make a car unsafe, it’s a stupid rule that number plate spacing can be ‘illegal’
My car failed an MOT a few years ago on a leaky shock, and bad discs no big deal, garage offered to repair for £180 the same day, but I always use my local mechanic, so I refused. On my way down the road I was pulled by police and VOSA, they watched me leave the garage and wanted to check the report, so I agreed to go to a different MOT garage for VOSA to check the car against the MOT.
My car went onto get a pass from the VOSA guys with no advisories. Clearly the garage was a conman, not sure what action was taken against him as I never went back there again.
What a people
Thnaks for the video. Really interesting. Very professional.
How many times did he check that the doors open and close properly?
Good vedio very informative
running that engine for nearly an hour is a bit excessive.ive had to wire my rad fan up to the heated rear screen circuit as theres a fault with the fan coming on automatic so i have to inform the tester of that fact to prevent an over heated engine 🔥
not going to lie mate your voice fries my head
Dvsa need to see this
probably best if they don't though
What does the trunk door bot opening has to do with security? Or the rear doors? Some cars do not even have them 😂
Where can I get a pry bar like yours with a rocker on it?? Watched your video meny meny times before passing my demo test 👍
Hi great video. I'm looking to buy a car but the eml light is on. The owners are saying it passed the last mot with the light on so it'll pass the next one. Is that true. Can a car pass the mot with the eml light on? The cars 2008 vauxhall meriva
EML Light on is a fail iam afraid.
@@markgrant696 yeah I've not bought the car, the owners are adamant it passed the last 2 mot tests with the eml light on. Liars.
standard cars, ELMS light tested on petrol vehicles after 01/07/2003, diesel after 01/07/2008
Thanks for the detailed video..
They just leave the engine running the whole time?
Looked like one of the reverse bulbs was not working..
😂😂😂
They weren't testable anyway ,
First registered on after after 1st September 2009

Corsas only have 1 😆, smh
Hi Matt, just needed your professional opinion. My front wipers for my mokka works however it has a mind of its own when on automatic and continues and only stops when I manually stop it . It wipes well but is this an MOT fail. When I turn my engine on the wipers sometimes goes off on its own and sometimes it doesn’t. I believe it’s the wiper motor but it is a fail
It's a pass as long as washers & wioers clear the screen when operated
@@markgrant696 thanks mate
Is the emission test the same for Diesel , 3000rpm for 30 seconds?
If my diesel van smokes on start up only would it fail an mot?
If it passes the Deisel smoke test it will pass, If it only smokes on start up you should be ok.
Sorry how we can check all wheels drive brake with one line roller!?
Why do they have to leave the engine running while doing the mot?
Very nice good mot test sir
What are the requirements for this job?
Go to collage, learn then apply for job
Why did you leave the engine running for the whole test? Also I'm not sure the front steering and suspension needs to be tested so many times. The tests you did were adequate, you didn't need to re-do them again and again by different methods. Likewise how many times do you need to check the doors open and close!
Cars inspections in America be like “you drove here bro? 🤔” customer “yeah, I sure did” “all good then dude, here’s a gun, a Big Mac on the house and well see you next year”
Car drives off with wheels almost falling off and the car more Holy than the Vatican City 😂 not to forget enough pollution to kill anything it passes
Iv got my demonstration test soon but where I work is a single person test lane, I learnt on my course with an assistant the same routine what would change if I'm doing it on my own
Hi good luck when doing a single person test you use the wheel play detectors for steering a front suspension also use the brake pedal stick to pressurise the brake system
@@ijbmottesting do you still need to use the turn plates aswell and when in the routine would be best to use them
@@dgmechanic1359 yeah to do the lock to lock check. I do it with the brakes under pressure as it gives a good view of the front hoses. Not knowing your layout or routine I am afraid I can’t advise on when to do it
Great video, thank you
Helps keep you fit.
I see every day scrap cars on the street and i wondering how they pass their M.O.T?
Has the car been scrapped
You should of used the obd connector to check revs and that way you didn't have to keep walking backwards and forwards 😂
Great Video it helped alot
Doing my test tomorrow practical ooooohhhhhh
Thanks for informative video. However could you please do another video where you can be a bit more specific on some points. For example, windscreen condition ie size of area that can be damaged and tyres' thread and wheels condition. Also, am I right to believe that a 4x4 can't be tested for braking in the way shown, as transmission may snap?
Damage has to be excessive that the drivers view of the road ahead of affected and within the swept area of the wipers. Tyres on a car is 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of tread and most 4x4 are tested using a decelerometer for the foot brake and hand brake
is reverse light part of MOT test?
Reverse lights on a vehicle Registered after September 2008 must be checked
Is that a ATL set up
Good old corsa chain rattle
Thank God we only have to go to this circus every 2. year where i live.
Very good, but that car running in there all this time and no exhaust extraction attached to the exhaust pipe, your job is to keep the cars safe but don't forget to keep the workplace safe for your workers.
Why no speedo check?
a road test is not normally required for a MOT inspection (one can be done to confirm or deny test results) so if like my test bay i drive vehicle from just outside car park into MOT bay and back again at end of test its just a visual inspection. does it look damaged enough to "not work"! (if you do a road test say to confirm excessive brake judder and see speedo not working, then it becomes a fail)
@@motorsportsfan Two of my older motorcycles failed earlier this year on the speedos as they were not showing KPH on the dial, pain in the butt to get sorted plus another long wait to get another test as I missed the 3 week retest deadline
Nice video my car failed on front wipers they worked ok but sill cost me £34 .yet back wiper is not checked ???
back is not tested and its not a legal requirement to have a back wiper
Where is this garage?
It's in Halstead Essex UK
Phone Vosa somebody quick before he closes down
Did not see the steering lock check.
He did it after turn to turn
love the vid
Thank you
Why checking an engine oil level by dipstick? What would happen if there wasn't enough oil in an engine? Lol
Well the oil stick is there to show an indication that there is oil in the engine, it doesn't show an exact amount only the maximum and minimum, if you don't have oil in an engine it will very clearly seize up due to the heat and expansion of metal components then leading to the destruction of your engine.
i have found many vehicles to have no oil showing on the dipstick, refused to test vehicle, customers replies are always "well the oil light goes out" which i reply " that's a pressure light! not a level light, and if it comes on you've either got a dodgy sensor or you've got engine damage!" (note :- a lot of people think the oil light is a level light!)
No enough oil result in refusal of test
he forgot to check how thick the paint was just in case it blows off when driving 😮

The biggest mistake here is leaving the engine idling for a long time, Never do this not to kill your engine
One of the reversing lights are out. How did you not notice that?
many cars have just one mate, how did you not notice that?
You forgot to check operation of washers and wipers ! Also didnt check passenger door from the inside !
He did it mate, just watch again carefuly
If this is how a (diesel) smoke emissions test is meant to be done, then I am shocked, concerned and angry about the way Kwik Fit did it on mine. It failed 3 times and observed how it was done on the third MOT.
The mechanic was giving it a brief but FULL throttle to max revs reading (6000 rpm, deep into the red values) in repeated attempts (6x). This resulted in some black smoke coming out every time and values of over 0.51 m-1, meaning it failed a 3rd time on MOT, that under emissions test conditions shown in the video would have passed, plus potential damage done to the engine and/or timing belt.
And that for a car (Citroen C4 diesel 1.6 L HDi) that has been well maintained, 9 years old and only 41,000 miles.
Diesels are checked differently to petrols, diesels are revved briefly to the max up to 6 times, petrols are held between 2500rpm and 3000rpm for 30 seconds. It pains me to say it, cos I hate Kwik Fit, but it sounds like they tested your car correctly.
@@johngardner340, thanks. More TH-cam research seemed to confirm the same conclusion you gave.
To me though, still seems a very unfair emissions test, as no one will drive their diesel even briefly above 4000 rpm, let alone 6000 rpm. Perhaps the test should be at 3500-4000 rpm for 30 seconds, similar to that for petrol. Seems fairer.
I think this is the government's way of clearing diesel cars off the streets faster by making them fail easier.
Kwik fit are on a sales commission...mm
I don't think you've understood the point of the test. You're driving a 9 year old diesel with 40k miles, chances are it's emission control systems are not performing correctly. There should not be excessive black smoke when they rev it, it is correct that they issued a fail. It's a test of your car and if the timing belt can't last on the rev limiter then the test will find that out!
@@SuperVitz I'm no mechanic but do have some understanding of the emissions test (thanks, TH-cam!), and very much agree that test needs to be done. Just I don't understand nor agree with why they do the emissions test to maximum revs for diesels (when no one drives at those limits normally), but then test petrol engines for their emissions under revs levels matching normal use and not to max revs levels. Seems discriminatory, even if the mechanics of the engines are different.
50 minutes test time and you didn’t check the prescribed areas under the footwell, otherwise brilliant 👏👏👏
This test procedure is ridiculous. And sort that door check strap out!!
I noted the following…
didn’t check the security of the lights. Didn’t check the seats properly for security. It does have power steering which he stated it doesn’t. Also said it has a ford sigma engine, it doesn’t! He jacked the car up whilst the engine was running, and let it run throughout the test. I would have failed you.
Why leave idle
Why would you not do everything in a productive order. Like getting your assistant to jump in to check the front lights then get out while you walk round is just mental
And he missed stuff as he was testing
You really think techs bother to get someone to jump in every time they do an MOT? That’d do my head in for sure😂

He checking car as a predator. :D It's lookin that he HAS TO find any fault on car because has to be done any repair. Specially when is older car. I don't understand how people make money doing this. My test only cost £35. Requires two skilled workers pay plus all the equipment and overheads?
Most mechanics wouldn't go into this much depth unfortunately, standards slip and things are often missed.
This is why buying an automated test ramp is better. You would not require an assistant. Also, if the price being charged is £35 the garage would also fix any failures and this would constitute to a revenue averaging anything up to £80 per test depending how many they do
Government subsidises the test.
Daftendirekt no it does not.
They are maybe doing this at a loss in order to get the job of any repairs needed, on which they make a big profit. Some places invent faults and hope the customer takes their word for it. I'm an ex-mechanic and have caught them out several times.
60 seconds into the video and first mistake, You do not use the chassis number on the windscreen. Must be from the chassis plate or stamped into the body. incorrect procedure and use of the assistant on the rear, Park brake reserve travel not part of the test, Missed the Anti roll bar drop link ball joints for checking for play, pre check missed oil level check and fuel to carry out the test, list goes on.
I think your being too harsh here, this guy has gone over the top with all the checks, no mechanic that I know goes this far, only just checking the basics, also are you a mechanic? If you are then how long does it take you to do an MOT?
you can use any FULL VIN NUMBER visible when taking details down to match with MOT data base, then also check that all VIN's are the same (been testing 30 + years had about 10 instances of either incorrect VIN on data base or slightly differing VIN's on vehicle) if you don't check you won't find
