    Great video Jim. We don't have any recurring roadworthy test here in Western Australia but we have almost no corrosion unlike the UK. Owning and running a workshop, non roadworthy issues here comprise bald tyres, almost non functioning down to the the metal brake pads, below legal limit disc thickness, totally worn out suspension components with lots of play, oil leaks, useless wiper blades (we don't need wipers at all in summer!) and malfunctioning transmissions through not being serviced etc. Many people's idea of maintenance is to wait until it breaks, repairs often costing more than the car is worth. I always recommend a proper pre purchase inspection by an independent workshop for anyone buying a used car, even from a main franchised dealer. Their advertised 100 point checks are barely worth the paper they are printed on!

      Cheers Tim, yes crazy to think of a place where corrossion and rain are equally rare, certainly given the last few weeks over here :) - I agree mate, independant inspection is worth more than any marketing spiel.

    Good advice Jim as always - the other problem with a fake mot is the next year when you mot it properly you can have a massive unexpected bill after previous mot having no advisories on it! So it will cost you big time in the long run

    Something for the people buying a fake MOT for their own vehicle to think about is giving out the VIN and registration to self-confessed criminals. They could well be into other vehicle crime.

    Also worth remembering
    On the goverment mot checker site, if you have the 11 digit number on the V5C (log book) you can see who and were the rest centre is, and contact them if required.

    Wow. I'm old enough to remember the old MOT ..basically a piece of paper certifying your car was MOT'ed . And you regularly hear in the local pub "ah just go to xyz he sells certificates cheap" & tbh I know for a fact it was very common.
    But I honestly thought since the whole system is now computerised & linked to DVLA I assumed all this had stopped !
    Obviously not, very concerning - goodness knows how many so called reputable"dealers" do this! Interesting vid, thank you

      Yeah
      Back in the " pen and paper" certificate days, there was always somebody who knew somebody who would sell you a blank one for £50.
      Then off to the Post office for the kind 60 year old dear with thick glasses to look at (along with your fake insurance policy document, bish/bash ,exchange of money and a years tax disc to shove on your windscreen.

    something else you need to look out for is, the legit MOT centre writing down the wrong mileage on your certificate. Happened to a friend, where there was a taxi in at the time and they swapped the mileage round by mistake. In other words they increased his audi A4 by over 100,000 miles. Despite the Mot centre writing a cover note to explain and Audi confirming that the mileage was wrong DVLA would not accept it and in the end he took 10 grand hit on the car, when he traded it in for a Q5.

    On the other side of the coin is the government MOT test centres in Northern Ireland, there is only 15 test centres in NI which are currently running anything up to an 8 month backlog which means that a lot of motorists have to put their cars of the road as they can not tax them without MOT, A total shambles of an operation that is no fault of the motorist.

    • @DefinitelyNotAGuru
      @DefinitelyNotAGuru  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it seems pretty broken at the moment.

    • @georgebarnes8163
      @georgebarnes8163 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very broken, I have been trying to get an MOT test date for my car for the last month which can only be booked online, after many hours of trying to get a test date I eventually got one for February next year, I got that down to the 5th of January due to a cancellation which again took many hours of button pushing on the internet. My current MOT runs out in 2 days so I have to drive my car without an MOT until January next year unless I can find another cancellation which involves many hours on the internet or a very expensive boat rip to Scotland for a test.@@DefinitelyNotAGuru

    Thanks for that mate, I hadn’t heard of “Ghost MOT’s”but I guessed.
    I’ve bought cars in the past that shouldn’t have passed their MOT, one car I bought cheap had 3 months MOT left and hadn’t done many miles since the last “alleged” MOT and I was staggered after taking it in for an MOT that it needed around £800 to a £1000 to pass the. MOT, needless to say it was scrapped afterwards, I know a car will develop faults after an MOT test but these faults were Corrosion related mainly so how the hell does a car rot like that in under a year!
    I had my suspicions it had a “Friendly” MOT by the previous owners mate.

    I must be a born crim, because I assumed this was already happening … I’m using a new MOT tester now, and my car passed without a problem. I was shocked tbh, but relieved.
    I have been wondering if they didn’t do a full MOT, but used their ‘experience’ as mechanics to run it through quickly?
    My previous Ford Escort van always had a list of fail/advisory, and I wondered if that testing station was ‘over zealous’… the kind of place that says :’it’s not worth the cost of getting it through the MOT, but we’ll buy it off you for a hundred quid’… 😏

    • @DefinitelyNotAGuru
      @DefinitelyNotAGuru  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There have always been dodgy MOTs but I’ve never known of MOTs being advertised so blatantly by people who don’t even pretend to look at your car. Best is to use an MOT place that only does MOTs, cheap MOTs often lead to a big bill at the end in my experience 👍

      I know what you mean about the over-zealous ones. I used to own a Honda CRX and the JDM import had plastic headlights whereas the UK version had glass headlights. On a forum I was a member of there were always reports of some MOT testers failing the JDM imports because of the beam-pattern even though in Japan they drive on the left hand side. I read through the relevant section of the MOT regs and personally it looked like it was down to interpretation of certain paragraphs as to whether the JDM import should pass or not, and this was reflected in the almost 50/50 pattern observed between garages passing them and other garages requiring modification on the forum. Also I do wonder if garages just make stuff up sometimes, so they might say it's failed the MOT on X,Y, and Z but really everything is fine, they just want to make some money. I think that's the general issue here, being able to trust the people you take it to to be honest, give it a thorough check without adding extraneous items for no reason.

      I assume it's always been that way, but at least many people could fix their own car in the past.
      Not quite so easy anymore!
      I'm sat in a cafe in the city, and half the people using the toilet aren't buying from the caf....the World doesn't seem to be what it used to be...but then again, I'm old, so I would say that 🤣

      Ive purchased a car MOT completed on the day i purchased it. I belive its never gone to the Garage. Im booking it into DVSA for an MOT. What happens if its failed from obviouse reasons is there help to force the MOT station to correct it. Its been 10 days as stupidly purchased over Christmas week ( Never again) So The milage on the MOT and the dash do not match so ive not used it and can show the DVSA the MOT is higher. Lots if ither problems getting the paperwork after I paid. No matter how vigilant you are there is no gaurantee you will get handed what you see after payment. I had to nag to get the registration done. Theres just to many faults and ways to lengthen the time i couln't use the car, so i want the MOT redone at an authorised place.
