To watch this great event for MIKE SMITH makes me Laugh and makes me Cry ... I was a DC5 Fan during the British Invasion, but a Huge MIKE fan. Luvved his lead vocals and that perpetual impish grin that never left his face. For Paul Shaffer to have done this is simply spectacular .... Thank you Paul, and above all RIP MIKE ! Miss You Buddy .....

What a great show and tribute. Thanks for posting this, and of course special thanks to Paul Shaffer for pulling all the right strings to get it up and mounted. It's clear Paul *loves* this music. Fifty years ago, I played in a largely '60s cover band, and we were every bit as enthusiastic about all the little details that, for us, *made* these tunes as memorable as they were and are. You can see it in the way he conducts and what he emphasizes. And of course, the everpresent Vox Continental organ. IN 2018, I attended the NAMM trade show, and the Vox booth was giving away free harmonicas, that were labelled as "Continental" and provided with plastic cases in the exact same colors as the Continental organ.
The last chapter of Mike Smith's life was indeed a sad one. I liked the DC5 a lot.

This was an Awesome random find today...sad that it was years ago now, sadder That Mike Smith is passed.
But, as a teen in the 80s, I wasnt doing Madonna, Michael Jackson, Smiths, Bowie, Furs, Etc....THIS was Me and I was PROUD OF IT. BEATLES, KINKS, DC5, ZOMBIES....BRIT INVASION.
AN old Soul, me. So for me it's a double memory. I Knew then, this music was 20+ years old. Now, 2008 is 15 years ago.
Such a Renaissance of Great music that brit invasion era and Mike Smith a HUGE Voice in it.
R.I.P. behind that Vox Continental Mike

I used to work in a Bank in the City of London in the late 70's and early 80's and drink in The Plough on London Wall Highwalk, sadly the pub isn't there anymore. Mike was living in a flat in the Barbican while he was working at the embryonic Capital Radio and used our local during the evenings, he was a pretty good pool player too.. We all got to know him and he even held a poker school on a Thursday night in his flat. He was a lovely chap and I often think of him. I was so sad to see that he had died so tragically. Miss you matey.

When i woke up a week afther my cesarean 13 aug 1989. The only few words and tune what was in my mind , “ trains and boats and planes took you away” and nothing more!😢 i could never find the hole song and didn’t new who was the singer/ band until in 2012 a friend of me used shazan ….a few minutes later i heard the HOLE song and heard the name of Billy J Kramer! I also had a sort of video/ clip in mind but no one could explain what it ment. In 2013 i was called to help to participate in a study in the hospital in Groningen. Since 1989 I thought I had just had preeclampsia, but that turned out to be eclampsia (not pre-eclampsia) so I was just dead, but they were able to bring me back. but I still think it is very special that I was the only one who could sing this song after waking up even though I had never heard it before, but I still play it regularly and it makes me happy! Thanks for this life saving song Billy❣️

The Dave Clark Five performed 18 times on the former hugely popular Ed Sullivan tv show that's more than any other rock band did on that show. And for awhile the Dave Clark Five were right up there with The Beatles. The DC5 were a big part of the mid 1960's rock acts British invasion to America.

Happy that this s popped up on my TH-cam feed. I was a little young for the early British invasion but later became a big DC5 fan. Aware of a lot of the story between Dave and his hired band mates. Sad about Mike but nice to see he wasn't forgotten.

I was in my prime through the British Invasion . Great time ,memories to never be experienced again .
Every Friday SAT night was party time . Saw big names live and many sweet memories .
You’d be surprised who came to our city in london ont Canada ,many big names at really great door prices .
It’s really neat to remember who we saw .late 60s,70s,80s,90s. Fast cars ,great chicks , great parties ,great smoke !
Remember that had to be hidden ,now it’s wide open .

Mike Smith is a great singer. He may also be the most underrated singer...maybe ever. And that is a SHAME. Also, if you Google Mike Smith his name will not come up. You have to Google Mike Smith of The Dave Clark Five. Another MISTAKE history has made.
