Best sound and best car! I'm a proud owner of a w124 200D 1991 with 438.000 km's in it, and it still runs like a dream. I'm also a proud owner of a w124 300D 1991 with 512.000 km's in it. It just runs, runs and runs. In my opinion, no car manufacturer delivers this quality anymore. Pity.... So, one choice remains, which is to keep these beautiful cars up and running! :-)
Dad had a W124 E 250 with doch, he placed a Dr.pepper can on the the valve cover, and revved the engine, the damn can stood almost like untouched, amazing engine! Never seen an engine more reliable that the OM605 engine. Rust, that's what kills these cars, too bad, but our had ran for 70.000+ km since '97 as taxi when we sold it further to my uncle, then it rusted up there. And the owner after that teared it apart, and happens to be my neighbour, but damn that motor runs just fine still today :)
We have used semisyntetic oil in the summer and fullsyntetic in the winter, changed oil between september-october in the fall and again in april-may. Agrol 10W-40 is great for colder winter climate but is a bit thin when warm, but if youre sloppy with engine heater the 5W-40 is way better for coldstarts. Mobile oils are also a great oil. Also you can try 5W-50, which is just about as thin as 5W-40 cold but warm thicker (10W-40). Don't run it longer than 15.000 km changes apart with fullsyntetic.
I have just bought a 1991 300td 7 seat estate which has full 300te spec leather cruise air con sunroof etc etc and i love it. Was only ment to be a stand in while one of my vans was of the road but its great so smooth and comfy and with 246,000miles on her she still runs great. I found a great website where you enter your vin number and it tells you everything about your merc its spec colour codes trim engine etc etc. Great video for a great range of cars.
@sebq998 it is the injectors, but they arent stuck, theres nothing wrong with them. thats how a mercedes diesel sounds. and camera mics pick up that noise alot worse then what it really is.
Oh and W124 is just the internal code designating that series of middle class Benz's being built from 80something to 96. The four-eyed E-class is called W210, and their successor W212. It doesn't have anything to do with the engine.
Sheesh guys. Take it slowly. OK, that 300D was naturally aspirated, a 5 cylinder engine. In the W124 it was also available as a turbo, but only in the station wagon at first. I am not 100% sure whether the TD was also made available in the sedan, but I think so. This one certainly is na and I think has 95hp. There also was a 250D, which if I am correct also was a 5cyl, and a 200D, which is a 4cyl. The 200D has 73hp.
There's nothing called the best because there's cars that are the best and the worst, Mercedes is one of a kind and there's just 'Mercedes', nuff said ;)
Try replacing the glow plugs. Look at the astonishing smooth way my 300D starts after replacing the glow plugs. The glass of water stays on the engine without falling off. You can find my video here in TH-cam by just typing my name Esepelisa and Glas Water (spelled in Dutch :-) Cheers!
der motor is noch lange nich durch son alter 300d hält ewig bei uns inna mercedes werkstatt haben wir fast nie solche teile! sind eben noch gute autos mit gutem klang
@sebq998 less miles, newer engine, or it could just be the quality of the mic for the camera....my 300D is quiet when its cold, but even quieter when its warm. and it gets even quieter when i am running it on corn oil.
@2URBO2: Ich würde auch mal Vorglühanlage und Einspritzung checken. Da laüft mein 200D bei -15° besser an. Und VOR ALLEM: Ruhiger, obwohl er zwei Zylinder weniger hat...

yeah those mercs are the best cars ever for cruising , i have recently bought a Mazda RX-7 fc3s wich is at 30L/100km but insanely fast with 300HP still i enjoy the merc more

E can hear perfectly the sound of the pistons shaking inside the engine... thats why I love diesel!

W212 is the newest E-Class... (you know those commercials where the car slams through the Mercedes-Benz museum) W210 was replaced by model W211.

No the W124 was a turbo Diesel. the E300 diesel of the late 90's was more powerful and NA.

@sweedspeed18 no, its the combustion of the diesel, run 1 of these engines on pure corn oil, and that noise will go away. its the the combustion.
