Depends on the mode, but yes you use the Genie app for say tracking or motion timelapse. But you can shoot with other apps like Filmic Pro and use Inception mode.

Was pleasantly surprised by this Moza gimbal. Was not expecting it to be very good (saw some bad reviews too), but after testing and reviewing it now like it quite a bit. Move the gamble one way to quickly and the phone bumps into the lock and bounces into portrait mode. Move it the other way and it can end up locking. I’ve decided to change it and will probably go for the Moza Mi or Mx
That’s the one gimbal we haven’t tried! Have heard mostly good things though. The Moza gimbals are solid choices. Recently added a buyer’s guide to our website where we have all the gimbal videos we’ve made that you might find helpful... bit.ly/GimbalBuyersGuide
Just watched this video. Thank you for the review - really helpful. One question - I appreciate the gimbal doesn’t integrate with Filmic Pro, but can I start recording within Filmic Pro by using the gimbals record button, or do I need to press my phone screen? Bit of a bummer having to touch the screen all the time.
Thankx for a great product review. I don't own an I-phone, I'm team android (4ever). I always need to know how certain mobile filmmaking products would work for android, even though they seem to gravitate towards iPhone . Did it take long to get use to operating the device at all?
We’re working on a review for that one, too. So can’t really say yet, although as mentioned in the video all these gimbals are pretty solid choices (Zhiyun, Moza and DJI are the main ones we’ve used).
Hi, when using the Inception mode, how do you stop the phone anticipating the move and "flipping" - so the object does not rotate as the phone overcompensates ? It's driving me crazy
Great video, Thanks! What gimbal do you suggest for Iphone 8plus considering the dimension and weight of this phone? One thing I like about the Moza mini Mi is the payload (300g) much higher than the Osmo Mobile 2 (200g), a great feature in case you want to add lenses. On the other side the Osmo is integrated with FilmicPro. I can't really get what is probably the best gimbal on the market for Iphone 8plus.... any suggestion?
Our current favorite is the Movi. But really they’re all pretty good. Out of these two would go with Osmo if you want to add no accessories and want Filmic integration. Moza if you do want accessories because of the payload.
@@iphoneographers Thanks for your answer I0ll probably go for the Moza Mini Mi...i personally think I can set up filmic pro manually from the phone before recording. I like the idea of trying different lenses.
I was wondering if you tried an external mic, i am looking into a gimbal & that i can use an external mic for better sound, any-info would be great. Thanks.
Did you ad any stabilization in post? How do you find the stabilization through the Filmic app? When filming with a gimbal in Promovie and their stabilization on I'm finding it really bumpy
We used stabilization in Filmic Pro and always tend to leave it on. There’s an on/off button for it in the main settings menu. You just have to be careful not to bump the phone because the OIS will kick in and will make the footage jittery/jello. But if you keep it steady and use the app image stabilization you can get really smooth results with the gimbal.
Can you help me out by informing how to measure the weight of ulanzi anamorphic lense with filter adapter & ND filter? Cause, I am struggling to choose a perfect smartphone gimbal for me between "Zhiyun Smooth 4(max: 210g)" & " Moja mini MI(max:300g)" based on the max payload capacity. Extra lense with adapter & filter sounds pretty heavy. Could you please help me by your suggestion please?
All accessories weigh different amounts and so really you need to look at the manufacturer to figure it out exactly. That setup you mention is probably in the 150-200g range, guessing. And so with a phone that weighs probably 200g or more you need a good payload capacity. This video might help… th-cam.com/video/UspNcgZkIRw/w-d-xo.html and there are other videos linked with it to show more options. But as a general rule for setups like that I prefer larger capacity gimbals like the FeiyuTech G6 Max or similar.
Would like to ask your opinion on how important is native in gimbal connection to Filmic Pro. I have the Smooth 4 and use the in gimbal controls and like the ability to control focus, I have not experience with other gimbals but am considering the Atom. However, I am just not sure how much I will miss the above mentioned feature and would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks
Good question... For us we wouldn’t miss it that much. Partly because until recently with the Smooth 4 we never had it. But also, besides hitting record we don’t touch the screen and adjust too many settings once we’re shooting. We definitely adjust exposure and focus, but we’re so used to quickly touching the screen and the reticles that it doesn’t bother us - and actually often it feels faster. So while the integration is very nice and you have more control at your fingertips, We don’t mind not having it. We obviously shot this entire video without it and had no problems. If we had to pick something the biggest thing we miss is the remote record button.
I just started using moment lens and their pro camera app. Which gimble would you recommend in that situation? Also if the iPhone is charging, how would you attach a microphone? Thanks! Great video..
Depends on your phone. If it’s a plus size then Moza or Movi as they have the payload capacity. If it’s standard then either of those and possibly the Osmo Mobile 2. To attach a mic on this use wireless charging or a Bluetooth mic if plugged in. Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for the quick response! The Moza is much less expensive then the Movi, so I'm temped to go with it. Do you think I'm sacrificing quality? This is my first gimble and I'd like to keep things as simple as possible. Which one has the better (easier) app? And do you have to use their app or could I use the moment Pro Camera app? Also, I'll be shooting in remote areas with no wifi or cellphone signal. Does that matter? I really appreciate your advice.
The Movi integrates with Filmic Pro which is really great. And it’s the best gimbal we’ve tested and used. But, it’s pricey compared to the others. You can get good results using all of them with some practice. The Movi is probably the easiest to use right out of the box. Both their apps are okay but we wouldn’t suggest using them as you can’t shoot higher bit rate like you can in third-party ones. The Moza has good tracking though if you need that. The Movi doesn’t have tracking yet. The counterweights on the Movi can be tricky to setup. The Moza you should get a universal counterweight and it’s pretty easy to use. If you’re on a budget go with the Moza. If you’ve got the money and don’t mind learning the counterweight system go with the Movi.
Im new subscriber to your channel, do u suggest gimbals over steadicams? Like volt from steadicam? I never liked the way gimbals stabilises videos... also what rig is advised to add some intentional shaky look on mobile phones
Thanks for subscribing! Really depends what you’re shooting. Gimbals can be great because they’re affordable and pretty easy to use, but they can have challenges on the vertical axis and up/down motion without practice. Actually haven’t used a Volt, but have lots of experience with larger Steadicams and they’re very nice for movies or commercials etc. They both do similar things so just go with whatever works best for your project. For shaky footage would just shoot handheld with whatever rig you want or no rig - just beware of OIS issues and jello effect of the video that can happen.
iPhoneographers 🙏 thanks for your reply... I think for now I’ll be shooting 🖐 held videos until i try one of these gimbals first, to get its behaviour. By the way i have just purchased used sony a6000, now wondering after knowing the fact that it can shoot only 1080 @ 60 fps in contrast to my iphone which can shoot upto 4k @ 60p. 👍 But definitely there will be quality in dslr when compared to iphone.
Thanks for the awesome guide and videos about the Mini-Mi, my only question is, while using the gimbal will we lost alot of features in the FiLMic?? Since its have been 1 month plus of you using it, any updated flaws?? Quite confuse to choose from the freevision Vilta or the osmo 2, but the mini mi is on top of the list right now, just have some doubts 🤣
The main drawback to this gimbal is you can’t control it with Filmic Pro - so if you want that then would suggest the DJI Osmo Mobile. But we just touch the screen and it works fine. Otherwise it’s been a solid gimbal. TBH, they all seem pretty similar performance wise to us. Oh the Zhiyun Smooth 4 will also integrate with Filmic Pro and is another good option. Lots of choices! :)
Our current pick is the Movi Cinema Robot. If you don’t want to spend that much then in our opinion the rest are all very similar and work well. If you want Filmic Pro integration though go with the Osmo Mobile 2 or Smooth 4. The Osmo holds more weight if that matters to you.
It works with either. What we shot was with Filmic Pro. You just change settings with the Moza app, if needed. Otherwise it’s all hardware control so any video camera app will work.
I have the moza mini mi and it was good for the first couple of weeks, but now I'm having problems with it. It will come on, then the stabilizer will just give in and the left light start blinking. I've looked all over but can't find a solution.
Possibly. You would likely need a small counterweight and then everything would need to be under 300g. Not sure how much that mic weighs, but this gimbal has a good payload capacity.
Thanks for the video. I'm having some issues with my Smooth Q 3 + counterweight + Moment wide angle + nd filter. The gimbal motors are able to hold the gear for a few seconds and then they just give up. Have you tested this gimbal with third party lenses?
@@iphoneographers I got a contradictory response from the Filmic Team. Even the url here doesn't cover the Moza Mini S a supported Gimbals filmicpro.helpscoutdocs.com/article/17-which-gimbals-are-currently-supported-by-filmic-pro
I just got this and the head where you mount the phone is stuck and not moving. I mount the phone and balance it then turn it on and it is stuck in horizontal position. I’m sure it’s something super simple to unlock this... any advice?
@@iphoneographers No. Shooting vertical is sacrilegious ha. I figured it out. The latest versions have a locking mechanism where you need to use a little force to unlock it. That said, it seems, like all the rest of the smartphone gimbals Ive tried (10+) simply cannot handle the size of my iPhone XS Max + Moment case and attachment lenses (counterweights help), but when you want to go into flashlight mode or low angle, the phone mount hits the motor wheels. One day hopefully a manufacturer will make a smartphone gimbal that can accommodate larger phones with attachment lenses. The phone mount itself on this one can't even grip my phone that well. Bummer.
Yes indeed! :) Just wasn’t exactly sure what you meant it being stuck in horizontal position, but that makes sense now. Did you look at the Zhiyun Crane M2? The Moza has a very good payload capacity for a smartphone only gimbal, but the M2 will hold twice the weight.
Hi, I have a Pixel 2XL and purchased a moment lens for it and it comes in at 292g. But, because it's so off-centre do you think this thing could handle it? My 1st gen Osmo Mobile certainly can't 🙄
Would say... probably. This holds 300g. You most likely need a counterweight to balance and most of those are about 35g range, so it’s pushing the limits with it. But this gimbal holds the most of all the ones we’ve used. The Movi might hold more, but they don’t publish the payload info (at least not that we’ve found), and it’s 2.5x more expensive.
Simply shooting with the FiLMiC Pro app and controlling the gimbal via the handle (not the Moza app). Gimbal apps do not offer the same video quality as third-party dedicated video camera apps.
Sorry I do not speak English. I translate with Google. I have a problem with the mini. When I use "inception mode", and move the joystick to rotate the phone, the mini goes to stand by and I don't understand why. Can you help me? Thanks
It’s possible you have too much weight on it or you’re not properly balanced. And if you’re using a third-party lens you likely need a counterbalance. But it sounds like a possible weight issue. Hope you get it figured out!
Such a long time i was waiting a review with Filmic... Hey bro... can you give a video using Moza Mini mi with an android device... I will be receiving my Moza mini mi in couple of hours and i am planning to buy filmic pro... if you can do a video on that please notify.
Do any of the gimbles work with a phone case? I haven't seen one case one any phone and it freaks me out. I thought I was watching a review not a horror film.
I got this gimbal recently and I'm finding all kinds of issues with the Genie app. Have you had any of these happen to you: * after a 3-5 min shoot I can't turn off the record. Period. Button on handle press was ignored. Touching the stop icon on iphone screen was ignored. I had to close the app and then it dumped the video I just took and lost it! :((( * It took valuable Christmas vide in normal speed but no matter how I export it, it comes out in slo-mo. I wrote support and they don't have any answers. * It's very easy to accidently shoot in the wrong mode as it doesn't revert to a standard setup but to what you last setup for. I had taken timelapse and forgot. Next shoot was all timelapse. Doh! Call it pilot error but it didn't warn or make it obvious this was my setting. * Had the gimbal go spastic on me, jittering and even violently flipping around. Could have broken my phone face if it was mounted on it. * Tracking for me hasn't worked. I've only tried indoors but I found it easily fooled. Questions... * about Filmic Pro. Does it give less access to features than Genie app? Does it allow tracking? Timelaspe? Hyperlapse? That mode that you showed where it pans here, then there, than tilts... is that possible in Filmic Pro? * about Flashlight mode. How is it able to smooth out the up and down movement of walking? Arms are still connected to your shoulders that are moving up/down. Or does it cause you to walk differently (smoother)?
As we mention in the video... Generally we’re not fans of any of the gimbal apps. They’re all pretty lousy in our opinion. They have a place for sure, but we rarely use them. So in saying that, we can’t really help with those questions other than to say what we tested worked okay. The tracking worked very well for us, and have seen others say it works well too. That and the motion timelapse (and maybe Hyperlapse) would be the only time we’d use it. And sparingly even then. The quality just isn’t there. With Filmic Pro you not only get a far superior UI, but high bit rates along with log & flat color profiles (using the in-app upgrade to the Cinematographer Kit). It’s night and day. You can’t do all the stuff the gimbal app can do except for timelapse. But for us, that’s more than ok, as again we rarely ever need or use that stuff. This gimbal has also performed very well for us. Recently it’s been our go to gimble. We’ve had no real issues and really like that it will hold up to 300g. By far the heaviest payload of these kind of smartphone gimbals. We have had a gimbal spin and shake before, but that’s just when the arms get out of align or something gets twisted or off balance and the motors kind of freak out. But we’ve had that happen with several even larger gimbals for DSLR cameras. You just turn it off and turn it back on and it will reset. Not sure any of this really answers your questions or helps, but that’s been our experience. Long story short, we recommend using FiLMiC Pro over the gimbal app.
iPhoneographers thanks for your prompt response. I have one more question about filmic pro and this gimbal. How much of the physical controls on the remote handle are usable in filmic pro. Or are you controlling filmic pro purely from the touch screen on the phone app? Is it just the stop and start where does the zoom focus also work? Thanks for your great video review!
With this gimbal + Filmic Pro you control it on the phone. It’s not integrated unfortunately. If you want that it works well with the DJI Osmo Mobile and the Zhiyun Smooth 4. Although not everything works, but the primary functions do, which is nice.
Hy .. saya sangat menyukai video anda. Tapi saya sangat terkerdala dengan bahasa inggris. Bisakah anda memberikan terjemahan di bagian bawah vidoe ? Saya sangat berterima kasih untuk ini. Salam
That’s too bad. We had the opposite experience. Worked very well for us. The tracking in the app is probably the best there is in this category. Although, we don’t suggest using these gimbal apps for everyday shooting - we use Filmic Pro or other 3rd party apps for higher quality results.
The problem is with calibration. If you calibrated wrong you need to do the default calibration again and follow closely the instructions.@@jeffparker3617

Great video as always! Does this gimbal work with Moment lenses?
We did not test that here, but the payload capacity at 310g should allow it to depending on the phone you’re using. Thanks for watching!
iPhoneographers of course! Love your channel.
Have to use the phone screen unless there’s been an update that we don’t know about.
Enjoyed video. Would this gimble and software work with an OPPO R9S phone. The only one I've seen who mentioned this phone was the Vimby 2
Can’t say as don’t have access to that device. But the app is cross platform. The gimbal will work with any phone but maybe the app won’t.
Thanks, I can't remember if you see the gimbal while using pro max 11 wide lens ?
Wide lens it’s all clear. Ultra wide you’ll see it in standard mode, but flashlight mode works fine.
Thankx for a great product review. I don't own an I-phone, I'm team android (4ever). I always need to know how certain mobile filmmaking products would work for android, even though they seem to gravitate towards iPhone . Did it take long to get use to operating the device at all?
Pretty easy to use. Good payload capacity. Solid gimbal and very affordable. Can’t talk to the Android aspect though.
Does it better then dji osmo mobile 2?
We’re working on a review for that one, too. So can’t really say yet, although as mentioned in the video all these gimbals are pretty solid choices (Zhiyun, Moza and DJI are the main ones we’ve used).
Hi, when using the Inception mode, how do you stop the phone anticipating the move and "flipping" - so the object does not rotate as the phone overcompensates ? It's driving me crazy
Haven’t had that problem, but maybe you could try turning on Orientation Lock so the screen won’t flip.
Thx man..Wonderful video.
I was wondering if you tried an external mic, i am looking into a gimbal & that i can use an external mic for better sound, any-info would be great. Thanks.
Didn’t here, but it could work weight wise. Depends on the mic setup for cable etc. Have used one on the Movi Cinema Robot though for sure.
Did you ad any stabilization in post? How do you find the stabilization through the Filmic app? When filming with a gimbal in Promovie and their stabilization on I'm finding it really bumpy
Sorry I just rewatched and found out no stabilization in post. Any thoughts on the 3rd party app stabilization?
We used stabilization in Filmic Pro and always tend to leave it on. There’s an on/off button for it in the main settings menu. You just have to be careful not to bump the phone because the OIS will kick in and will make the footage jittery/jello. But if you keep it steady and use the app image stabilization you can get really smooth results with the gimbal.
iPhoneographers thank you so much for the reply. I love your videos you’re great at what you do
Can you help me out by informing how to measure the weight of ulanzi anamorphic lense with filter adapter & ND filter?
@@iphoneographers Thank You so much, Your suggestion means a lot 💖
Thanks for sharing your informed experience, this helps a lot. I will try the Atom in store before making a final decision!
But definitely there will be quality in dslr when compared to iphone.
nice video , but I'm not sure yet which gimbal is the best for a smartphone
Our current pick is the Movi Cinema Robot. If you don’t want to spend that much then in our opinion the rest are all very similar and work well. If you want Filmic Pro integration though go with the Osmo Mobile 2 or Smooth 4. The Osmo holds more weight if that matters to you.
Hi there. Just found your video. Have you tried updating firmware? If you did, did it have any problems? Thanks
We did after we first got it and had no issues. We have not tried recently though.
So i have the same gimbal but the issue i ran into was i can’t use filmic pro with the gimbal. It’s not compatible? Maybe you know how to help.
Yeah it doesn’t work to control the gimbal, but works fine just to shoot with the app.
Ok thank you!
will this gimbal work well with a note 10plus ?
Haven’t tested it but it works with the larger phones, but not with any kind of 3rd party lenses.
Does the inception mode work with filmic pro or only with its native app?
It works with either. What we shot was with Filmic Pro. You just change settings with the Moza app, if needed. Otherwise it’s all hardware control so any video camera app will work.
@@iphoneographers great! Thank you.. I'll be getting one
I have the moza mini mi and it was good for the first couple of weeks, but now I'm having problems with it. It will come on, then the stabilizer will just give in and the left light start blinking. I've looked all over but can't find a solution.
Sorry to hear that. We have not had issues with ours. Would try updating the firmware and if that doesn’t work would return it.
Will it work with an I Phone SE in an Otter box with a Shure MV 88 attached?
Possibly. You would likely need a small counterweight and then everything would need to be under 300g. Not sure how much that mic weighs, but this gimbal has a good payload capacity.
@@iphoneographers I could get a cable and rig the mic on one of those 1/4 20 mounts. The SE will work with the softwear?
FiLMiC Pro will not 100% sure about the Moza app though.
Thanks for the video. I'm having some issues with my Smooth Q 3 + counterweight + Moment wide angle + nd filter. The gimbal motors are able to hold the gear for a few seconds and then they just give up. Have you tested this gimbal with third party lenses?
This gimbal will hold 300g of payload weight. It’s one of the better ones in this category. It will hold a third-party lens.
can it handle & still balance if we put lense on samsung galaxy s10e plus? thanks
Probably need to use a counterweight, but otherwise yes. It has a great payload capacity of 300g.
Would u recommend the Filmic Pro app to be used also with an Android? I have the OnePlus 7 Pro and will use it with the Moza Mini S
Yes definitely. It’s a cross-platform app. You can actually download the Filmic Evaluator app for free to make sure it will run ok.
@@iphoneographers ok thanks. The evaluator only shows the feature list. Is there any eval version to try on before buying the Pro?
@@iphoneographers I got a contradictory response from the Filmic Team. Even the url here doesn't cover the Moza Mini S a supported Gimbals filmicpro.helpscoutdocs.com/article/17-which-gimbals-are-currently-supported-by-filmic-pro
You gotta check out the ATOM gimbal by Snoppa though, it’s the second gimbal that also supports wireless charging and it’s pretty cool too.
Yeah someone else commented about it too... the Snoppa guys contacted us about reviewing it, but we haven’t seen one yet. Looks interesting.
iPhoneographers I’d be looking forward to that in-depth review then. 💯💪🏾
Second that, please review and compare the Snoppa Atom. It has some interesting features but no native connection to Filmic Pro unfortunately
I just got this and the head where you mount the phone is stuck and not moving. I mount the phone and balance it then turn it on and it is stuck in horizontal position. I’m sure it’s something super simple to unlock this... any advice?
Are you trying to shoot vertical?
The Movi might hold more, but they don’t publish the payload info (at least not that we’ve found), and it’s 2.5x more expensive.
iPhoneographers thanks for taking the time to consider and reply - much appreciated
I just purchased this gimbal and was under the impression it was not compatible with Filmic pro? So how is he using Filmic app here?
Simply shooting with the FiLMiC Pro app and controlling the gimbal via the handle (not the Moza app). Gimbal apps do not offer the same video quality as third-party dedicated video camera apps.
So what if I were to attach my Moondog labs anamorphic lens to it, would it be able to support it's weight?
Didn’t test that, but it should using a counterweight. It holds 300g total, which is pretty good.
Review feiyu spg2 please?
Sorry I do not speak English. I translate with Google. I have a problem with the mini. When I use "inception mode", and move the joystick to rotate the phone, the mini goes to stand by and I don't understand why. Can you help me? Thanks
It’s possible you have too much weight on it or you’re not properly balanced. And if you’re using a third-party lens you likely need a counterbalance. But it sounds like a possible weight issue. Hope you get it figured out!
@@iphoneographers You were right, the phone wasn't balanced. Now it works well. Thank you very much :)
How good is this for an Android mobile!
It’s cross-platform so will work with most smartphones.
appreciate this so much, thank you
Such a long time i was waiting a review with Filmic... Hey bro... can you give a video using Moza Mini mi with an android device...
I will be receiving my Moza mini mi in couple of hours and i am planning to buy filmic pro... if you can do a video on that please notify.
Don’t have an Android but these apps work pretty similar so you should be good. We are considering adding some Android stuff in the future though. 👍🏻
Any other gimbals that you recommend? In the $150-$200 range?
DJI Osmo Mobile 2 or Zhiyun Smooth 4 are good options to check out.
You need a black panther music for those 360 roll shoot
Do any of the gimbles work with a phone case? I haven't seen one case one any phone and it freaks me out. I thought I was watching a review not a horror film.
Yeah most of them do actually.
Thanks for this video and recommendation but I will stay with my Smooth 4 as I love its Filmic Pro integration!
We like the Smooth 4 a lot. Love the FP integration especially! 👍🏻
Thank you
I got this gimbal recently and I'm finding all kinds of issues with the Genie app. Have you had any of these happen to you:
* after a 3-5 min shoot I can't turn off the record. Period. Button on handle press was ignored. Touching the stop icon on iphone screen was ignored. I had to close the app and then it dumped the video I just took and lost it! :(((
* It took valuable Christmas vide in normal speed but no matter how I export it, it comes out in slo-mo.
@@iphoneographers & cfcoder2 - Another option is the FilmicPro Remote. I have that loaded on my iPad and control my iPhone remotely with that.

the moza mini mi was really bad, app sucks couldnt use it cause the app didnt even work
That’s too bad. We had the opposite experience. Worked very well for us. The tracking in the app is probably the best there is in this category. Although, we don’t suggest using these gimbal apps for everyday shooting - we use Filmic Pro or other 3rd party apps for higher quality results.
@@iphoneographers I had to exchange it for the osmos mobile 2, which one do you like better?
Our favorite is the Movi. The rest are all pretty similar in our opinion and testing. The DJI is a good gimbal though.
cool?
