  • The Time Warp tool is powerful, but a little hard to master. This video goes over the basics of using it for film composition.
    I'm using Steinberg's Iconica Orchestral library to make new music for a video that my wife and I created 2 years ago.
    The final video with its original soundtrack can be seen here: • Unleash the Super Hero...
    Thanks for watching!

    This is absolutely the best description of how the warp tool works in cubase for video. Many many thanks for making a clear explanation for a tricky but essential tool in cubase.

    Thanks for making this! For years I've been struggling with Cubase when it comes to dealing with tracks that have time-AND-tempo constraints, like music separated by chunks of dialog that happen to be as long as the dialog happens to be. I'm not sure that I've quite yet wrapped my head around the paradigm, but I feel that I'm closer to a workable method...

Any interest in making a follow-up showing how you'd manage a conform/revision to a new video cut where a segment had to be removed and the adjacent chunks had to be partly filled or joined? Wonderfully clear Video Jef!! Thankyou. Is there any chance of showing some uses of the warp grid mode of the tool too (events don’t follow?)

    • @jefgibbons
      @jefgibbons  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I plan to for sure! I didn't want to make this video too confusing... But it's great for when you want to warp the grid around midi notes that were played freely. Then you can have a grid that lines up to anything that was played without a click track! Then you can re-conform that track to line up with a single tempo if you want, or just leave it as a constantly changing tempo.

  • @JMQuintanaCamara

    Thanks Jef for such a great explanation of this Time Warp tool! You clearly explained it with a great example. I only have a question about synchronization that was not covered in your video (maybe it is more advanced or maybe it has nothing to do with Time Warp tool and it has to be done in a different way): how do you do a ritardando or accelerando to synchronize with a marker? is it possible to transition from one marker to another with a ramp instead of a jump? The only way I find is to do the ramp (rit or acc) in the Tempo track but then Time Warp stops working :( I hope you have time to answer this question. Thank you very much in advance.

    • @jefgibbons
      @jefgibbons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the late reply... Yeah, the ramp doesn't work when using the time warp tool! I wish it did... but to fix that, I've used something like a tempo jump every 16th note division... a bit tedious but it works!

    Hello Jef, great video, thank you! A question if you have the time to please answer. In the case you then wanted to record this specific cue live and the players were playing to your click track. What would you do with that small section in bar 4 where the tempo dropped in order to get your matching tempo at 118 afterwords? (ie: punch in again?). Thank you

    • @jefgibbons
      @jefgibbons  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! My bet is they'd get the hang of it after a few listens, but if not you could easily throw in some 8th note high hats or even beeps so they can feel the tempo shifting better than just with the click track.

    What's the best approach to start a film music project? Place all the markers and align them with bars even when no music is written, or place the markers, write the music and then align the markers with bars?
    Great video!

    • @jefgibbons
      @jefgibbons  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, but you don’t necessarily want to limit yourself right away to those bars. I like to set it as I go, try what makes sense, then decide if I need to try less bars at a slower tempo, etc. thanks for watching!

  • @jaydenz8467
    @jaydenz8467 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the wonderful tutorial Jef. Cubase does not export video. How this change will be recalled in video editor? Would not video be out of sync with audio? And one has to synch video with audio again in video editor. Maybe i am missing something but i appreciate if you can reply. Thanks in advance :)

    • @jefgibbons

  • @AndreasvanHaren
    @AndreasvanHaren 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Jef! Thanks so much for your tutorials. I am a new cubase user, using cubase 10 (coming from Logic X). How would you approach a film scoring project for a say, 1 1/2 hour long movie? Do you score the full movie in a single cubase project, or do you score the separate cues in separate projects and combine them later in a "Master" project file?

    • @jefgibbons
      @jefgibbons  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +André van Haren thanks Andre! I’ve always managed to make them work in one huge project. It got complicated, but I’d freeze tracks that weren’t used a lot, and having everything there just makes copying and pasting themes so much easier. I used to have multiple PCs for this, but a modern computer with at least 32gb of ram should get you pretty far!

    • @AndreasvanHaren
      @AndreasvanHaren 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jefgibbons Thanks! At the moment I work on a, 21 inch i5 Mac (4 cores) that has only 8 GB of ram which is a pain, coming from a 32 GB Mac. This 21 inch model has to be completely taken apart to add more ram, which I don't think I can do myself. So for now, I will have to keep my movie projects small, best probably one cue at the time.
