That’s not how fair catch works. You’re giving yourself up once you touch the ball, if and only if the ball does not touch another player.(by another player if it hits the kicking team and a fair was called then it’s void and they can return it, but if it hits the return team, it’s considered a live ball anyone can get it) but just because the ball bounces doesn’t make the fair catch not a fair catch that would be too unfair because everyone will for fair catch let it bounce. Pick it up run it back. So it’s literally only there to prevent that.
A fair catch by definition for the ncaa in section 8 is “extending one hand only clearly above his head and waving that hand side to side of his body more than once” his hand never went above his head, and he never waved it side to side. This was a touchdown.
@@Jj2kalldayeven when you aren’t expecting them you’re taught to stay in from of the returner until the whistle is blown. What does them not making great attempts to tackle him have to do with the rule, you can clearly see in the video he doesn’t do anything that looks like a fair catch.
@Jj2kallday they were very obviously trying to tackle him, not even a question they were treating him as a runner with a live ball the second he had a hold on the football
I mean yeah if it’s a “fair catch” then they needed to call the late hit/unnecessary roughness. Refs fucked this play up altogether! Vegas must’ve called 😂
Very clearly not a fair catch signal. The kicking team didn’t see one either cause they still tried to tackle him. Also, if it bounced, isn’t the fair catch void?
I don’t know this controversy but I do see the entire team instantly trying to hit him. Apparently only the people who don’t matter think it was a fair catch sign
They didn't even make the call on the field, they reviewed the play and THEN threw the flag. Absolutely atrocious and the worst make up call in history.
Pointing is ok, it’s the other hand. The rule book clearly states a player may not (intentionally or unintentionally) wave his arm while the ball is in the air, He clearly waves his opposite arm. By rule it was the correct call.
I think the hand needs to come at least to the head level and make it a clear motion of upwards and kind of to the side, but it didn’t really come above his shoulder so it’s not a fair catch to be honest they need to go because his hand did not go above his shoulder pad and I don’t see how you could even even think going left to right shoulder level is a fair catch because anytime you seen a fair catch most likely you’ve seen the one hand go up above the head in circular motion back-and-forth but clearly above eye level
I actually wouldn't blame the refs for calling it a fair catch if they called it immediately and whistled it dead on the catch. He's waving. But when you don't whistle it you let the play go on, and the players responded in like fashion. To me you can't go backward after that.
Refs need to get reprimanded for making calls like this. A fair catch is when their hand go above their head at any point and not once did he do that and it’s painfully obvious
It was clearly a fair play..he was robbed! Welcome To The Philly and the NFL buddy, get used to it! We get bad play calls a lot. I swear they are paid off! Go Birds!💚🦅🦅🏈
The problem was his left hand waving. So it does appear that he could be pointing at the ball but it def can appear his was waving for fair catch signal. For me it would come down to what each ref would say and just rule it based on which side one on a majority rules
The return man #3 was pointing straight ahead & that is not a signal for a fare catch. A" Fair Catch" is a arm extended above the helmet waving for a fair catch. Defense may not interfere with the return mans attempt to catch the football 🏈. When he makes contact & catches it ...Hands off unless he muffs or drops it then you can hit em. Dangerous Job!
Thats a terrible call bc if its a fair catch then its un necessary roughness and they get another shot cant tackle a giy fair catching terrible call refs which one had money on the game😂
Listen the guys weren't going to stop so I say it wasn't a fair catch therefore if the what team was dead set on hitting that dude let's play Stan that's a touchdown
While you’re correct terrible call I just can’t call it the worst since it gave us probably a top 3 most iconic play in CFB history that wouldn’t exist without it
This call was to make sure Iowa didn't get into the CFP with 1 loss in the unlikely event that Iowa somehow beat Michigan, debate me all you want, this was a fix, Vegas made out huge on this game & it's happening more than you think

your arm doesn’t make a circular swinging motion naturally when u run you can either raise ur hand or have ur arm out and rotate it in circles which he did to signal a fair catch
People need to be honest with themselves, it was a fair catch. Everyone talks about his right hand pointing but look at his left. He did a full circle motion.
They still tried to tackle him, so the excuse they didn't expect him to run is clearly false
And also it being a fair catch they can’t touch him so it should have been a flag on Minnesota
Bro we got the same profile picture
Its pretty obvious that the coverage team didn't think it was.. they were coming for him
You can't fair catch a bouncing ball!!

Yes you can lol. But that wasn’t a fair catch signal at all

I was at that game and hell broke loose when it was overturned
I watched this live, before the punt return my dad called the td before dejean caught the ball. I guess the ref couldn't let my dad have that one
One of the WORST calls in college football history
If that was the case. The other team wouldn't tackle you. If the refs made that call. They need to foul the other team

Can’t wait to watch this young man on Sundays…I just hate he’s not on our team!

So if they tackled him, it would’ve been a penalty or even tried to
He was clearly yelling Peter. Not a fair catch signal

Not a fair catch. Tavon austin did this with the rams his rookie year. He was waving his arms for everyone to get out of his way
I've never seen or heard about this. That's an outrageous call.

Definitely wouldn’t have called that a fair catch signal. That’s crazy
Wow they did my boy dejawn wrong
He didn't mean to but be clearly fair caught that. Are you guys not looking at both arms???
2006 Oregon vs Oklahoma onside kick is still the worst officiating call in ncaa history. This is right behind it
I wanted to love this kid so much but he had to go to Philly, he could've been our Jackie Robinson

He was obviously calling “poison” so his team didn’t muff the punt. The whole team couldn’t tackle him anyways so who cares
