I recently put together a Kibler Colonial American Longrifle 54-caliber. Fancy maple stock and no patchbox. I was surprised that the hole for the lock screw was so far off on your rifle. Mine was about 1/16th of an inch off, and most of the chisel work was at the bottom of the breach plug area of the barrel. The most time-consuming area for me was the brass work, especially the sandcast butt plate. You are correct about the quality of Jim Kibler's kits they are very high quality and a pleasure to build. The lock is extremely fast, and the trigger is great. I hope you have many enjoyable years with yours.
I was a bit disappointed that the holes were so far off myself. Took a bit of inletting , but over all it was a fantastic kit, which is now an awesome rifle. I love it. I would like to eventually have one of every kit that Jim offers.
I just finished a southern mountain rifle lot of work to get the ram rod to fit little burs everywhere .will buy another maybe a woodsrunner. Thanks Jim Puffer
I had a similar issue fitting the ramrod on my SMR. Even atr filing and sanding the rod down to the diameter of the tip, it wouldn't go into the stock more than a few inches. I ended up taping some rolled up sandpaper to the end of a flexible fiberglass rod and ran it up and down in the hole with a drill. Even then it was a 1/2 day venture to get the right fit. Otherwise, the rifle went together pretty well. I will say that there was allot more metal work that I expected but in the end, it was an enjoyable project that taught me some skills.
Dennis you inspired me to pull the trigger. I’ve hesitated for a long time now. After your short introductory I decided it’s time. I am already the owner of several SMR Kibler rifles in various calibers and the Colonial in 54. His locks are incredible and beautiful. The lock is very similar to Jim Chambers Colonial Virginia Flintlock and Round-Faced English Flintlock. Two of my favorites. Jim’s lock works flawlessly you are going to be impressed! I don’t envy many people but I do you!! The only reason I don’t also have at least a SMR is I simply cannot afford it. We live on a very tight budget. Not because we want to but because we have to. Cancer caught me at the worst possible time and our retirement funds went out the window. Thankfully what we have is all paid for. And I know of no one that enjoy’s life anymore than I do. I am the most blessed man on earth. Still, a bucket full of Kibler’s would be nice!!! Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. I really enjoy them.
Dennis that’s the nicest thing someone has said to me in a while. It makes me think things are not so bad. I like you had have a special needs son whose illness has taken a lot from him and my family. I have not had cancer but I do have health issues from going to the wrong doctor for spinal surgery. That has made my life different and took a lot out of me. I bought most of my Kibler kits not realizing my spine issues were going to set me back. I have other Flintlock rifles in process but I had to put them aside in hopes that my legs improve. I had another surgery in October of 22 and it has been a slow recovery. I wish I had a fraction of your energy I’m only 66. With the weather getting better I’m going to try to finish my Lancaster. Have you tried an SMR? They are so light and shoot perfectly. If you ever get bored and are looking to build a rifle an SMR that is; I’ll send you one of mine. Build it shoot it for a year and then send it back to me LOL. Of course I expect the same care you have shown with all your rifles. I know I have a 36 maybe a 32 a 40 and I think a 45. Id have to check. I have two finished SMRs one in 32 and the other in 45. Heck I will even supply the finishing,round balls, spare flints, supplies. 😂The three stock are cherry walnut and maple if I remember correctly. They are interchangeable so I can swap one out for the other. They are pretty simple. Problem is I don’t think you are ever bored!!! Looking forward to your next video with the Wood Runner! One thing is for certain is I do need to get closer to God! Anyway when I got into BP revolvers I watched a video on TH-cam produced by LongHunter out of Texas; the fella who presented may be Jim Finches son or relative. Mainly cowboy shooting Jim is a champion. Any Jared goes into a discussion of powders. They don’t recommend anything but Swiss ; Swiss Caviar specifically which is a sphere shaped powder. The other Swiss presents granular like Goex but is more silver in color which I heard is graphite coating. Test prove there’s a significant increase in fps with caviar taking first place. Goex achieved the lowest velocities. This was several years ago. So yes I have a few cans of old Goex but it’s my giveaway powder! 😂 Unfortunately you can’t ship I would have sold it. So I use it occasionally to make BP rounds for my 44-40 and 45 Colt. But I have not done that in a while. Generally I use Swiss Caviar but have regular Swiss as well. As far as I’m concerned they are both very good! Not all dealers sell caviar but if you’re interested Buffalo Arms does. They are very helpful they can explain the honest differences. I liked it a lot. A bit dirty for certain but other than that it shot great in my rifles. The new stuff is not the same. I will do more testing in the near future. As far as velocities are concerned you can increase the charge to make up the difference if that was all there was to it. But that is not all. The quality has to be there in order to get the CONSISTENCY you need for accuracy. Am anxious to run the Swiss vs Goex over the chronograph to check for that consistency. I am certain the Goex will have a big shot to shot spread. The accuracy is all over the board in every rifle I have used it in. That tells me something is not right with the powder. I wish that Goex would set out to match if not even best Swiss. I like to use American made anything that I can. But not if it is inferior. I really think that Goex is having start up problems with the new plant. And since they are under new ownership that is a real cause for concern.
I had many of the same issues with my Woods Runner as you did. The patch box was very tight and didn't initially "snap" into place. After a bit of work however it goes in snug and with a crisp snap at the end. Also, the fit on mine is, I would say better than yours as the holes all lined up pretty well. The front sight had some small flaws as your's did. I just live with it. I draw filed the barrel too and am glad I did as it looks very nice now that it is finished. The barrel fit very tight and needed some file work to finally go into the stock and come out without a fight. I didn't inlet the wood I filed the edges of the bolster to make it fit. Well maybe I did file the stock just a little along the barrel. The precision of these guns is so precise that they all have the same issues. It is a complement to their precision and not a defect of their quality. I beveled the edges of the lock as well to get it to fit well. That is, so that it would go in and come out repeatedly without a fight but still make a good seal with the wood all the way around. Mine is going to be a hunting firearm and not a show piece. It will get used and worn over many years (at least I hope it will be that long).

I want to mention Dennis i noticed on the Buffalo Arms website that they have a note that 1F Swiss Caviar is discontinued by manufacturer. They had no other listings for 2FC or 3FC. Man the price of Swiss is up there. Anyway the Caviar line may have been discontinued. Anyway I just thought I’d mention. I’m sure it was a cost factor that led to it’s end. Most swore by it others not so much. Me I like it and have both regular and caviar.

Your woods runner finished out very nice, you did a fine job! I have a cherry stocked woods runner in .54 cal. I enjoy it immensely, I agree the woods runner has a handsome profile and are very nicely balanced, now are you going to have dedicated accouterments for this rifle? Shot bag,horn etc.. that's part of the fun building the accessories.

@@lyonforge3077 years ago I standardized on .50 caliber for all of my rifles. So all I really need is one of everything. But seeing as how I am not too bright I still have several of most of the accouterments. Not necessary but I have them anyway. But I hope to have a SMR one day in .45 caliber. A new day will dawn then!!!
I am glad to hear that this "kit" requires some work to get it fitted up, I did think that it was just a fling it together out of the box, but that would be no good at all, how could anyone say "I made this rifle" if that were the case, I usually like to make these from a slab of wood I cut from the tree, and file up the lock and butt plate, (buying in a barrel), but this kit has some attraction for a quick build. Naturally there is a great deal of satisfaction from building anything from scratch. But in the case of this rifle I was vastly more interested in the finished product than the process. I was not disappointed!!! Jim Kibler has done a remarkable job indeed. Probably precious few high end “custom” rifles can really compare to Jim’s rifles. Jim himself is a master gun builder and he has devoted is life trying to make it possible for the average person to be able to turn out a rifle that will rival most well made and hand built rifles. Kudos to Jim Kibler.
I purchased a scribed wood runner i don’t have the talent to do what many can so i paid more for it than the basic kit. I have to say i am pleased with it very pleased its going to be a nice rifle with very tasteful incised carving. I too have to fit the barrel mostly at the tang area which is slightly proud so I’m going to need to get the transfer black and the small chisel out. My barrel also needs to go back maybe a 1/16 or a bit more as you mentioned the holes don’t line but clearly will when finished being inlet. I do wish it was longer like the Colonial or SMR and had a longer trigger pull. Regardless it is going to be a nice looking rifle when I get motivated! 😂
After your last comment you kind off motivated me. Originally I thought my tang was sitting too high well it was but all I needed to do to set it flush was clean up the inside corners for where the tang would sit. I scraped them square and presto right down and back the barrel moved. Dennis does a good job explaining the little details. Hardest part of the assembly for me was lining up the trigger pin with the trigger 😂! It is by far simple to assemble. Now finishing is where talent is needed.
I think I want all three Kibler models...LOL. As I get older I lean more towards the flintlocks. Started with AKs and ARs, then levers and single actions, then came percussions and now, I want a flintlock or three. Thank you sir.

Hmm. In the How To videos of each step for Woodsrunner assembly, Kibler is pretty clear about what is needed to inlet the barrel and tang. You did infer that you viewed videos, (maybe not all.) At the 24:00 minute range, you talk about how your luck is to get "defective products". Given that you found bolt holes "off by 1/3 hole" and the after-finished gap that you left between the rear of barrel and the stock, what did you do to inlet stock? Did you follow the barrel inlet video? I'm not a Kibler Fan-Boy, (yet), but my Woodrunner is in delivery.
You are right about Jim having through videos on putting together his kits. And yes I watched them all. And others such as the ones from the NMRA. All very good and I followed their recommendations to the letter. It worked just fine. And I took my own sweet time. But there is NO gap as you referred. There are no gaps anywhere. The wood to metal fit is spot on. What you take to be a poor fit is not that at all. If your kit is like mine you will see what I am referring to. Have fun and I hope your kit fits together more like others that I have seen.
Dennis, I just completed a Woodsrunner 54 cal myself. Maple stock with aqua fortis and permylin with Jax blue. Great rifle with just right amount of hand work to bring it to life. Wish I could engrave on the metal and wood. Maybe later. Meanwhile another question. What's your favorite black powder Lube. I would suppose you make your for yourself? By the way I'm 70 out in Indian territories Oklahoma. Thanks.
Hello Oklahoma!! My favorite lube is a mixture of beeswax and some sort of an oil. Olive oil, bear oil, lard, Crisco and the list goes on. My usual is one part beeswax to about three and a half parts olive oil. For hot weather a one to four ratio is about right. And for routine stock care I again use beeswax and linseed oil mixture. Just play with the ratios until you have what you are looking for.
Dennis, great job it looks great I am waiting for Kibler to come out with a Hawken kit not that I need another rifle trust me on that ! I would like to see how you aged the brass if you get the chance. Did you get someone to build you a stand yet ?
I aged the brass by putting a little salt in an ounce or so of vinegar in the bottom of a container with a lid. I put a rack in the container and laid the parts on the rack. Do not put the parts in the solution. Suspend them above it.Leave them for as long as it takes to reach whatever degree of aging that you want. Then I took a cleaning patch with black powder fouling on it and lightly rubbed the brass. Have not had a stand made yet. But I will.
By the way Dennis, where did you learn about and start using over powder 3x3 wads then a lubed patch under the ball. Ever have any ballistic issues with this method. You are the first person I've ever come across that does this and some Black Powder people are of the opinion that such over powder patch isn't customary or good practice. Fill us in some here. I have no idea where or when I first heard of it. It is just common knowledge . It works so well you have to wonder why everyone isn’t using it. The only ballistic problem that it causes is more consistent performance shot yo shot. If that is a problem. One key to good accuracy is maintaining your main patch in perfect condition. When you pull the trigger all hell breaks loose in that barrel. Hell fire and brimstone savagely attacks your cloth patch. Any substance that you place between your powder and your mail patch will absorb all that fire and completely protect your main patch. You can use most anything, such as wasp nest, felt wads, card board, grass, leaves, virtually anything. Even corn meal. My patches came out so pristine that I can use them over and over if I wish. And by maintaining perfect condition in your patch there is no gas blow by, no lost propulsion from shot to shot. Performance improves. That is all the proof you need. This is if more and more importance
I ordered a Woodsrunner kit a few weeks ago. It arrived withing about ten days after ordering it. It shouldn't take long. Once they get the order ready they will call you to let you know that they are shipping it.
I had several options but the best one for me was to file enough brass off of the front surface of the butt plate. Kept filing until it snapped over the edge.

I want to mention Dennis i noticed on the Buffalo Arms website that they have a note that 1F Swiss Caviar is discontinued by manufacturer. They had no other listings for 2FC or 3FC. Man the price of Swiss is up there. Anyway the Caviar line may have been discontinued. Anyway I just thought I’d mention. I’m sure it was a cost factor that led to it’s end. Most swore by it others not so much. Me I like it and have both regular and caviar.

Your woods runner finished out very nice, you did a fine job! I have a cherry stocked woods runner in .54 cal. I enjoy it immensely, I agree the woods runner has a handsome profile and are very nicely balanced, now are you going to have dedicated accouterments for this rifle? Shot bag,horn etc.. that's part of the fun building the accessories.
I have already made both horn and bag for it. Other thing to come!! How did you know?!?!?!?
@dennispritchardoutdoors7882 I've made dedicated bag and horn for my flintlocks, it makes it easier to just grab the bag for the rifle when you go out shooting!
@@lyonforge3077 years ago I standardized on .50 caliber for all of my rifles. So all I really need is one of everything. But seeing as how I am not too bright I still have several of most of the accouterments. Not necessary but I have them anyway.
But I hope to have a SMR one day in .45 caliber. A new day will dawn then!!!
I am glad to hear that this "kit" requires some work to get it fitted up, I did think that it was just a fling it together out of the box, but that would be no good at all, how could anyone say "I made this rifle" if that were the case, I usually like to make these from a slab of wood I cut from the tree, and file up the lock and butt plate, (buying in a barrel), but this kit has some attraction for a quick build. Naturally there is a great deal of satisfaction from building anything from scratch. But in the case of this rifle I was vastly more interested in the finished product than the process. I was not disappointed!!! Jim Kibler has done a remarkable job indeed. Probably precious few high end “custom” rifles can really compare to Jim’s rifles. Jim himself is a master gun builder and he has devoted is life trying to make it possible for the average person to be able to turn out a rifle that will rival most well made and hand built rifles. Kudos to Jim Kibler.
I purchased a scribed wood runner i don’t have the talent to do what many can so i paid more for it than the basic kit. I have to say i am pleased with it very pleased its going to be a nice rifle with very tasteful incised carving. I too have to fit the barrel mostly at the tang area which is slightly proud so I’m going to need to get the transfer black and the small chisel out. My barrel also needs to go back maybe a 1/16 or a bit more as you mentioned the holes don’t line but clearly will when finished being inlet. I do wish it was longer like the Colonial or SMR and had a longer trigger pull. Regardless it is going to be a nice looking rifle when I get motivated! 😂

After your last comment you kind off motivated me. Originally I thought my tang was sitting too high well it was but all I needed to do to set it flush was clean up the inside corners for where the tang would sit. I scraped them square and presto right down and back the barrel moved. Dennis does a good job explaining the little details. Hardest part of the assembly for me was lining up the trigger pin with the trigger 😂! It is by far simple to assemble. Now finishing is where talent is needed.

Hmm. In the How To videos of each step for Woodsrunner assembly, Kibler is pretty clear about what is needed to inlet the barrel and tang. You did infer that you viewed videos, (maybe not all.)
At the 24:00 minute range, you talk about how your luck is to get "defective products". Given that you found bolt holes "off by 1/3 hole" and the after-finished gap that you left between the rear of barrel and the stock, what did you do to inlet stock? Did you follow the barrel inlet video?
I'm not a Kibler Fan-Boy, (yet), but my Woodrunner is in delivery.
You are right about Jim having through videos on putting together his kits. And yes I watched them all. And others such as the ones from the NMRA. All very good and I followed their recommendations to the letter. It worked just fine. And I took my own sweet time. But there is NO gap as you referred. There are no gaps anywhere. The wood to metal fit is spot on.
What you take to be a poor fit is not that at all. If your kit is like mine you will see what I am referring to.

Dennis, I just completed a Woodsrunner 54 cal myself. Maple stock with aqua fortis and permylin with Jax blue. Great rifle with just right amount of hand work to bring it to life. Wish I could engrave on the metal and wood. Maybe later. Meanwhile another question. What's your favorite black powder Lube. I would suppose you make your for yourself? By the way I'm 70 out in Indian territories Oklahoma. Thanks.

My favorite lube is a mixture of beeswax and some sort of an oil. Olive oil, bear oil, lard, Crisco and the list goes on. My usual is one part beeswax to about three and a half parts olive oil. For hot weather a one to four ratio is about right.
And for routine stock care I again use beeswax and linseed oil mixture. Just play with the ratios until you have what you are looking for.
Dennis, great job it looks great I am waiting for Kibler to come out with a Hawken kit not that I need another rifle trust me on that ! I would like to see how you aged the brass if you get the chance. Did you get someone to build you a stand yet ?
I aged the brass by putting a little salt in an ounce or so of vinegar in the bottom of a container with a lid. I put a rack in the container and laid the parts on the rack. Do not put the parts in the solution. Suspend them above it.Leave them for as long as it takes to reach whatever degree of aging that you want. Then I took a cleaning patch with black powder fouling on it and lightly rubbed the brass.
Have not had a stand made yet. But I will.

By the way Dennis, where did you learn about and start using over powder 3x3 wads then a lubed patch under the ball. Ever have any ballistic issues with this method. You are the first person I've ever come across that does this and some Black Powder people are of the opinion that such over powder patch isn't customary or good practice. Fill us in some here. I have no idea where or when I first heard of it. It is just common knowledge . It works so well you have to wonder why everyone isn’t using it. The only ballistic problem that it causes is more consistent performance shot yo shot. If that is a problem.
One key to good accuracy is maintaining your main patch in perfect condition. When you pull the trigger all hell breaks loose in that barrel. Hell fire and brimstone savagely attacks your cloth patch. Any substance that you place between your powder and your mail patch will absorb all that fire and completely protect your main patch. You can use most anything, such as wasp nest, felt wads, card board, grass, leaves, virtually anything. Even corn meal. My patches came out so pristine that I can use them over and over if I wish. And by maintaining perfect condition in your patch there is no gas blow by, no lost propulsion from shot to shot. Performance improves. That is all the proof you need. This is if more and more importance
The hotter the load the more it helps.

I ordered a Woodsrunner kit a few weeks ago. It arrived withing about ten days after ordering it. It shouldn't take long. Once they get the order ready they will call you to let you know that they are shipping it.

What did you have to do to get the patch box cover to snap into place?
I had several options but the best one for me was to file enough brass off of the front surface of the butt plate. Kept filing until it snapped over the edge.
