While Rune played well, it's hard to tell how well as Djokovic was awful. I can't think of anything he did well, nor did he put any pressure on Holger. Nole's forehand looked really good yesterday and was terrible today. He just gave away points. Credit to Rune for keeping the ball in the court and letting Novak beat himself. Rune played Rome with patience, also in Monte Carlo, especially against Sinner. Big contrast to his matches on hard court, especially against Wawrinka and Fritz, where he was often hitting for winners on shot 2 or 3. Even directly on serve returns. I wonder why he doesnt play with more patience on hard court. Maybe small injuries made him feel he couldnt do looong rallies? Against Wawrinka it seemed like Stan was in his head from their prior match (baby comment), and Rune wanted to hit it out. Surely patient play is best for him, he should use it on hardcourt too?

I sadly agree about Rafa - I'm no expert, but this seems too long for a simple soft tissue injury, I fear there's something wrong with the structure of his hip joint - but I think we're writing Novak off too early here. Better/warmer weather in Paris gives him a much better chance, and then there's Wimbledon, where none of the new players are particularly accomplished on grass (it barely exists anymore at junior levels). I still think he'll be favorite there - but it's definitely not assured.
@@grimson I noticed Nole's lack of stamina after coming out of his COVID infection. Maybe I'm hyped too much for Djokovic but it seemed as if he was at peace with the result, and in the post-game interview he was upbeat and answered optimistically about his chances at RG. I rewatched this year's Australian Open (on their official channel, amazing video quality and editing) and can't get over how dominant Djokovic was and I have to believe he will peak at the right time.
Novak is not the same on clay. While he can beat most players on tour, Carlos and Rune are at another level power, precision and court coverage wise. I see him not ready at all for RG.
They are getting older, body is wore done, look how long he has been playing, Nadel the same the body is beat up, not playing the French, he will be retiring soon, you hate to see it, but the younger guys are taking over now.
On this point, it really reminded me of the Nadal match at RG last year. Novak was going for way too much from the baseline and it didn't feel like he had confidence in his transition game until the second set.

Rune scored his points well, in the right balance of defense and offense for such a cold, wet day. Novak got too fussed up about the bad bounces in this year's Rome conditions. He should have realized with all his decades of experience that accurate serving + shot tolerance was the way to win here. Long rallies where the bad bounces can work more against your opponent than you. (I'm finally going to say it after Zverev, Goffin, Iga's knee today: clay is a shitty surface for tennis. We used to think that the relative softness of clay saves your body, but it's a grind that looks a lot better on TV with the intrigue of the extended rallies for viewers.)
Iga has herself to blame for her injury. She tried to go after a smash that was already past her just because she was going to lose the 2nd set. She was better off letting it go and possibly beating Rybakina in the 3rd without the injury.
Djokovic is dealing with elbow injury, he simply couldn't serve normally even if he wantes. He actually had also back and shoulder issues these days, some journalist that was there wrote it, cause apparently to compensate the elbow issue he used to force mainly shoulder and back rotation to serve and hit forehands in order to protect the elbow. In the match vs Rune he took painkillers during a changeover.
Thank you Gil. Your predictions for Rome semifinals(Rublev/Alcaraz and Djokovich/Sinner) shows once more how difficult is for anyone to predict anything. The tournament have been a total surprise.
As a Djokovic fan, this is what I saw: 1. It looks like Djokovic may -- may! -- have a mental block against Rune, similar to Rafa's mental block against Nole on hard courts. 2. Rune read and memorized the book 'How to Beat Novak Djokovic' by Daniil Medvedev. Rune was far more patient than Djokovic in the long rallies, keeping the ball in play and letting Nole's age tire the 22-time GS champion out, which forced Nole to dump ball after ball into the net or outside the lines. Meddy and Rune appear to have Djokovic's number when it comes to long rallies. Whereas other guys are intimidated by Nole in these long exchanges, Meddy and Rune appear to relish these extended rallies with him. 3. Nole was an UE machine yesterday. Cold, wet weather; cardio; and motivation (Rome not being a GS) no doubt were all contributing factors; but Rune's patience, power, variety, and impregnable defense made him a wall. 4. Nole's willingness to grind and to get into long rallies is clearly waning year after year. He must get his cardio up, or he'll go the way of Serena in her twilight years: a bygone champion most of the tour no longer feared. 5. On numerous occasions, when given the choice between hitting the ball into the open court or hitting it back to Rune, Nole chose to hit the ball back to Holger. Why? Make the kid run. 6. Motivation disparity. Nole's won Rome six times more than Holger's won a Masters1000 event. -------------- 7. Sadly, whenever I watch a Nole match live, 99% of the time he loses, and that was the case again yesterday. (I watched just to prove a point.) Needless to say, I won't be watching any of his FO matches live. Ole, Nole!
I don't think it's a mental block. Djokovic just doesn't have the stamina and power to play the long rallies and he can't create winners. The times when Djokovic won big titles on clay are over. But he definitely still has a word to say on hard court and grass.

It would be foolish to count him out of a grand slam. His motivation and level will be different. More than anything I think he didn’t want to play in the cold wet conditions. Paris will be different. End of the day he did not play well which helped in beating himself.
I'm really enjoying Rune. Djoko looked slow, beefing up the body doesnt seem to be doing him any favours, and clearly has yet to find his form. And seems that right arm is hurting
Most important may be his huge gaps of olay time. And even the elbow which is i jury issue together with leg may be attributable to his big gaps of play time. Injuries can happen from drops - gaps of usage.
Novak made so many unforced errors with his forehand and drop shot yesterday. Whenever he made a lot of mistake by drop shot, he could not win the tough match at all.
If it's said that Djoko didn't play his 100%, it will be like taking away the credit from Rune. It's not the first time; he defeated him last year also. Rune played so hard and fast that aged frame of Djoko couldn't cope with it and made lots of errors, those were all forced errors. Undoubtedly Djoko is the greatest player of all time but it has to admitted his body and mind is getting older and weaker day by day.
Hi Gill, Im kinda disappointed you havent covered any of Stefanos matches of late. It's all Carlitos, Carlitos Carlitos & Djoko. Musetti vs Tsitsipas was a lovely match. I want to know why Stef shanks so much - off both wings. But I wouldnt dream of bitching at you 😁 - as with Mo, that would be really bad form, even if he isnt infallible🙂
I thought the Tsitsipas Musetti match was awful. Both had numerous opportunities to break each other and serving from both was awful. Tsitsipas had many unforced errors as well. Gill is not covering him because there are so many players who can beat Tsitsipas on clay.
I 100% agree with you. It's either Carlitos, Carlitos, Carlitos, Djoko, and Sometimes Sinner. Gill should cover some interesting matches too instead of Alcaraz R32 Upset Match or Alcaraz vs Russuvuori match. I understand Alcaraz is special and very talented player but overdose of just one player just kills your interest in tennis.

@@wheresbaby7783 Agreed Djokovic beat Medvedev 2-3 times in 2022. But, Medvedev was struggling with confidence and form last year. Meddy just beat Djoker in Dubai.
Maybe it's wishful thinking but I blame the cold, heavy, wet conditions, the court and the new wonky Rome scheduling on Novak's loss more than his physicality. Sure there are injury niggles, obviously since he's taking pain killers, but it's not something to be overtly worried about I don't think. From the outset I said that if he leaves Rome having lost to Rune in a tight three setter, he'd have had a successful tournament. It wasn't as tight as it could be, sure, but it was still three sets, he still showed flashes of brilliance against a way more physically fit 20 year old, and I still think he'll go into RG feeling confident. If Rafa does end up withdrawing later today, as many suspect he might, Nole is right behind Alcaraz as the favorite for RG. And he'll be the only 22-Grand Slam champion in a field of inexperienced youngsters. I still believe.
I feel that the explanations as to why Djokovic lost tend to be contrived. He is quite old now, and simply can't keep up with younger guys. Same thing that happened to Federer in his last years. But I feel that it's very hard to beat Federer's longevity. Only super high-IQ technical players can achieve that, which Djokovic ain't got.

Undoubtedly Djoko is the greatest player of all time but it has to admitted his body and mind is getting older and weaker day by day.
I was wondering if Djokovic even reached 50% of his ability in this match. By his standards he was atrocious.

Oh well.
Ypu should have gone to Specsavers
I 100% agree with you. It's either Carlitos, Carlitos, Carlitos, Djoko, and Sometimes Sinner. Gill should cover some interesting matches too instead of Alcaraz R32 Upset Match or Alcaraz vs Russuvuori match. I understand Alcaraz is special and very talented player but overdose of just one player just kills your interest in tennis.
@@adityadeshmukh9906 Gil is covering Carlos because many of his viewers and subscribers want him to do it.
Nole's clay court season has been as lackluster, disappointing, and unimpresive as his AO run was scintillating, clinical, and dominant this year.
Rune beat Djokovic like “Ivan Drago” destroyed “Apollo Creed!” Holger defeats all ATP players, you will lose 😮 Help help, who will be Rocky Balboa and tame the beast?
The ball roved to be in by Hawkeye. Caught the back of the line.
What are you talking about. The hawk eye were shown on TV and it were OUT, as he explains in the clip it were a clear out!
@@Mike-zx1kx Did I say it was in? I must be tired….lol. I saw the ball was out as well on Hawkeye replay.
You didn't find a nickname for Rune😂.
Djokovic will be far better at RG. No issues.
He stun Novak, he gets the ball back deep, mixed up the shots, the pace, out last him in rallies, Novak was a step or 2 loser, these guys are not intimidated by him, hates off to Rune played a good match, Congrats
Nole just played poorly in sets 1 & 3. Novak just did not bring it. Rune just dominated. Thanx Gill. Best, Milan
Rune played very well. But he is still young and inconsistent. He may loose to Ruud in the semi, but I hope not.
I’m going accept the fact that Big 3 is pretty much done. End is so near imo
Alcaraz has subbed in for Federer. Soon Rune/Sinner must settle in. Djoker four more Big3-level years.
@@zetristan4525 - I’m worrying about Novak’s motivation level.
@@Hacker-rx1vn Rest assured he is as highly motivated as ever. He'll certainly play Wimbledon and the US Open with the same passion and drive he showed in AO'23. He'd also love to show the young guns who is the master of best of 5 sets at the French.
(Even tho sadly, he's likely losing his great rival Rafa, he's embraced the new rivalries. Eager to battle Alcaraz, and you saw he's almost willing to put his life on the line to beat Medvedev. Novak will teach these guys just as skilfully as Roger taught him&Rafa)
I also stought thart
Novak has lost in Dubai, Monte Carlo, SRPKSA Open, Rome, never won after Australian Open.
Rune, Alcaraz, Medvedev. All seem to have Novak’s number.
That's why Djokovic leads Medvedev 9-5 head to head genius 🙄 And reserve your judgment about Alcaraz and Rune until they beat him in a grand slam.
@@jacobschmidt2709 well last few years Med has Novak's number. And Med is improving on clay.
Djokovic beat med the last three times ...Alvarez read lined to win ..djokovic had the first match with holger.......why are people such idiots .he is older. He has off days..just wait until RG..he won the first slam
Djokovic is 0-2 against Rune
Novak is getting old now, maybe he's still got a Wimbledon in him and that's it:(
I feel that the explanations as to why Djokovic lost tend to be contrived. He is quite old now, and simply can't keep up with younger guys. Same thing that happened to Federer in his last years. But I feel that it's very hard to beat Federer's longevity. Only super high-IQ technical players can achieve that, which Djokovic ain't got.
Wow again gilly Billy ready with excuses for loss.
Ooo it was cold he will be great in rg etc
Get a life
Gill is wrong. He won’t be good. Bet your house on Djokovic not winning RG, and you will not have a place to get a life. (Don’t do it.)
@@RonyGao forget rg novak has won his last slam. Rafa can always come back and win rg .
