Hi Eric, why leave Hawaii, I had the impression that all the natural elements are so enchanting, is it not so peaceful? All the best for your future adventures in Spain. Laurence
Hi Leslie and Alan 👋 Really enjoyed your video! Bananas from your yard? Woweeee! Had to laugh at the " no disposals" Once again the scenery is beautiful. Love the water. Thanks for sharing! Happy Easter 🐇💜💚

I am Canadian and moved to funchal last September and I am also retired. If you go to Pingo Doce you can get 100% canadian maple syrup in the organic section. Also you can buy Kerry gold white cheddar cheese (mature or vintage is good). I enjoy your videos. How much did it cost you to ship your car?
There will soon be a Lidl in Madeira. Stock up on real Canadian maple syrup! Visit Porto Santo when you can. You'll love it! Madeira is simply breathtaking ☀️

Bom dia dubtig Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. We appreciate the kind words. I know it looks like we are terrible to Greer. She gets carried most of the time,(think 2 year old with their hands up, saying carry me). She hates it when it is hot out so she has been staying home eating bon bons most days. Her weight shows it as well. She also loves to drag her feet so she doesn't have to go anywhere. This is the reason the channel is named 'It'll Be Fun'. This made me smile! My husband and I recently downsized from the same size house as you, after 22 years in rural South Carolina on a lake to a 1 bed apartment in downtown Denver. Quite the change! (The first time that my husband has not lived on a lake in his 60 years)And our youngest daughter lives in Sydney, Australia so we have to plan for a 16 hour time change to talk - I've forgotten many times!

Hoping to go visit again with our daughters for New Year’s. Have you tried Poncha yet? They make them with passion fruit too. I love all the dishes you described except sardines. ☺️

A couple restaurant recommendations : 1) for one of the best espetada restaurants: “Polar”, in Pico da Cruz. The meat is sooo tender there. Delicious! For a great Octopus dish: Go to “Ribeiro Frio” where the trout pools are. don’t know the actual name of the restaurant but it’s I think the only restaurant there. You pass the trout pools and the restaurant is on the same side. You can then take a nice short walk from there to a vista point called Balcões. Beautiful views.
Hi Lilia, Perfect! Thank you so much for the recommendations. We will put them on our must do list. If only our car would hurry up and get here. We are missing being able to get up and go around the island. We have been asked to show some of the foods we talked about. These restaurants will be perfect. Thank you very much for watching. Great video! Thank you for sharing your journey. We are taking our first trip to Porto/Lisbon this Fall. It was originally planned just for my husband and I, but instead we decided to make it a family vacation (3 out of 4 of my girls are going) and now my sister and her husband have decided to join us as well. I have been dreaming of retiring in Portugal when our youngest graduates high school in 4 years, but we will have to wait til 2028 when my husband is eligible to retire at 53 years old. I guess now til 2028, we will just do some annual trips and see where we will land. One thing, Im not sure I can live without is my garden and chickens. I work at our local greenhouse and I just love being around flowers, etc. I hope to have a nice size land wherever we settle, but I guess it will depend if we want to split our time in the US and Portugal or just make Portugal our permanent home. Have you looked at properties in Madeira?

I just moved to Lisbon 10wks ago from the island of Maui. I agree w your information in this video. Luckily, I started studying Portuguese on my own 18mos.ago and will be a full-time eat the Univ.of Lisbon studying the Portuguese language.. Two things you didn't mention. I used to be a football radio analyst on Maui. It's very difficult to catch American sports here. No sports-watching resources AND the time difference puts games at either 9p or 1am here😕 Also, even with VPN, TH-cam will sometimes restrict one's access to certain channels because you're located outside the U.S. That's all I can think of right now. Boa sorte!!

***** I HAVE A QUESTION, PLEASE***** First, Thank you for all of your efforts on this channel as we are really enjoying your work. We found your channel because we're thinking of doing the same thing and very much in the same boat as you and your family. We will be sending over some possessions though think everything will fit inside a 8 foot by 20 foot shipping container. With your VW, did you have to do the same? Any advice on how to go about it and get started? And did you end up paying a tax to import your household goods? Did a cargo ship have to travel to Lisbon for example, and then transfer on another ship back to Funchal? I would love to get an idea as to the price if you don't mind sharing. And if you don't mind a suggestion, a video on these particulars would be most helpful to many Americans (and others) thinking of joining the trail you've blazed. Hoping you are still enjoying paradise!
Ola, We just published a video on the cost of importing a car and household goods. Take a look at that and let us know what additional questions you have. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. Leslie and Alan
Great video! I've been to Madeira back in 2018 and I so wanted to move there! But we are stuck in Washington state. So happy to go along with you both on this present journey! Iam a gardener and I loved all the plants there! And yes ...sardines and scabards!
Hi Jeanne, Madeira is wonderful! When you get the chance we hope to see you hear in Madeira. Hopefully by then we will have a garden of our own. Thanks for watching and let us know if you have any questions. Have a wonderful day.

There are some great blessing mixed into the little things we miss from the states! Here, there is no ignoring advertisements in our mail. Why, because there is no mail. Yes, there is a Post Office. Sending things by mail is seldom done here. Unless the government uses it for official business. Then your mail must be retrieved from this place, after standing in a line. Some businesses have a mail box. Most citizens do not! To pay your monthly bills, for example is your responsibility. You never receive anything by mail. You are not reminded either, in any way! Very different process, for sure!
Ola Barbara, No mail... I don't think I would miss it. Think of all the political ads I would not have received throughout my lifetime. Would have saved a lot of trees. 😊 Some processes are different here as well but that doesn't mean good or bad just different. Like you we just learn and adapt. Thank you for supporting our journey. Enjoy yours! Alan and Leslie
Love your narration style of your videos. More original than the majority of videos out there. We can see a lot of thought and time has gone into this video. Well written and spoken and great content. Thank you and your wife Leslie too, as I am thinking she is behind the scenes working as well.

I think you need to get a home in one of the villages and you can plant vegtables and fruit trees. The language, yes, big problem, learn to speak portuguese it will help you. Leaving family and friends behind is sad and maybe one can become lonely at times.
Ola Alex, Thanks for watching. Yes, there are expats groups on Madeira as well as throughout Portugal. Facebook is where you can find the expats Madeira group. Have a wonderful day Leslie and Alan

I feel for you..You have become 'third country people' We left the UK 40 yrs ago to live and work in the Netherlands . We had ALL your issues. You become addicted to your home foods.. wether they were good for you or not. because they are comfort foods We slowly weaned ourself off UK Cadbury chocolate and found amazing Belgian chocolate. Finding the better quality equivalent treat became a game. We now also live in Portugal and miss absolutely nothing about the UK... except Fish n Chips.. which we can still get occasionally Enjoy getting healthy and fit.. and ditch the junk.
Olá Jenny, Thanks for supporting and watching our channel. Yes, so many things to enjoy, and discover all new favorites. Enjoy your journey Obrigado Alan and Leslie
I feel the same way here in South Carolina, I don't know what the illegal immigrants here are saying behind my back in line at the stores. Should have taken Spanish in high school I guess. I hope to see you guys in 3 years when I start my early retirement at 55 there as well. Thanks for the videos.
Congrats to your future adventures! Yes, if possible you should work on your new language skills now. Here in Madeira everyone speaks English very well. It is really just that we feel that since we have come to a new country and we should speak the language of the country. Out of respect. And we really want to learn it.
I really don't mean to be rude as I enjoy your videos. It's interesting however how you call yourselves expats instead of immigrants that you are. There's no shame in being an immigrant. And no maple syrup? Really?
Hi! That is so interesting. We discussed this when we first got here with some of our local friends. It was decided that we don't earn our wings to become immigrants until we speak the language. Then we no longer have to be expats. We get to be immigrants!!!!!!!!!! We can't wait. I know the maple syrup is a bummer but we just learned we should try sugarcane honey. so we will give it a try. Learning new things everyday.
There's a couple that moved from Canada, that bought land and plant all kind of fruits and vegetables. There's apps and lessons for learning portuguese.
Hi Pat, We are off to Pingo Doce to shop the organic section! Life is good! Thank you for supporting our channel. As for the car the cost is very expensive and it is still not here 5 months later. Due to wars, shipping issues etc. So we do not have a final total as of yet. We will definitely let you know when we do. Have a wonderful day, Alan and Leslie

And if you don't mind a suggestion, a video on these particulars would be most helpful to many Americans (and others) thinking of joining the trail you've blazed. Hoping you are still enjoying paradise!
Ola,
We just published a video on the cost of importing a car and household goods.
Take a look at that and let us know what additional questions you have.
Thanks for watching and supporting our channel.

Great video! I've been to Madeira back in 2018 and I so wanted to move there! But we are stuck in Washington state. So happy to go along with you both on this present journey! Iam a gardener and I loved all the plants there! And yes ...sardines and scabards!
Hi Jeanne,
Madeira is wonderful! When you get the chance we hope to see you hear in Madeira. Hopefully by then we will have a garden of our own. Thanks for watching and let us know if you have any questions. Have a wonderful day.
Very important, please think ABOUT
the public out USA . THANKS

Ola Barbara,
No mail... I don't think I would miss it. Think of all the political ads I would not have received throughout my lifetime. Would have saved a lot of trees. 😊
Some processes are different here as well but that doesn't mean good or bad just different. Like you we just learn and adapt.
Thank you for supporting our journey.
Enjoy yours!

Love your narration style of your videos. More original than the majority of videos out there. We can see a lot of thought and time has gone into this video. Well written and spoken and great content. Thank you and your wife Leslie too, as I am thinking she is behind the scenes working as well.
Bom dia Bill,
Thanks for your support. We appreciate it.
Thank you for the compliment as well. If you knew Leslie you would know how true your statement is.
tchau!
Enjoy your journey,
Alan and Leslie

My suggestion order all your favorite american foods and courier them to Madeira or ask your family to post them to you. Make life easy for youself.
Ola again! Caroline,
Thanks for the idea!
I think you need to get a home in one of the villages and you can plant vegtables and fruit trees. The language, yes, big problem, learn to speak portuguese it will help you. Leaving family and friends behind is sad and maybe one can become lonely at times.
Ola Caroline,
A place to grow things is probably best for us. We will see how things work out.
Is there an Expats group there? When I travel, I join expats group to answer some of these questions?
Who is filming you?
Ola Alex,
Thanks for watching.
Yes, there are expats groups on Madeira as well as throughout Portugal.
Facebook is where you can find the expats Madeira group.
Have a wonderful day
Leslie and Alan
Ola Alex,
One of the three of us does the filming. In this video I don't remember who did the filming. We are all learning together.
Enjoy your journey

There's a fine for not collecting dog poop-500€ in Portugal
Bom dia Luis,
Thanks for your continued support. We appreciate it
We think it might be the stray animals. We oy.see it in certain areas here on Madeira. So we know where to watch and everything is fine.
Have a wonderful day,
Alan
@@ItllBeFun Don’t forget it will a be a great exhibition of classical cars on the last weekend of the month
All those “foods” you miss are so unhealthy. I think you greatly extended your life and the enjoyment of your health by moving.
Ola Karl,
I think you are correct!
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel
Have a wonderful day

I feel for you..You have become 'third country people' We left the UK 40 yrs ago to live and work in the Netherlands . We had ALL your issues. You become addicted to your home foods.. wether they were good for you or not. because they are comfort foods We slowly weaned ourself off UK Cadbury chocolate and found amazing Belgian chocolate. Finding the better quality equivalent treat became a game. We now also live in Portugal and miss absolutely nothing about the UK... except Fish n Chips.. which we can still get occasionally Enjoy getting healthy and fit.. and ditch the junk.
Olá Jenny,
Thanks for supporting and watching our channel.
Yes, so many things to enjoy, and discover all new favorites.
Enjoy your journey

Really?
Thank you Alan and Leslie for taking us along. And love your vlogs. Immigration is on many minds for all the reasons you have shared.
Thank you for your support we truly appreciate it. Have a wonderful day!
There's a couple that moved from Canada, that bought land and plant all kind of fruits and vegetables. There's apps and lessons for learning portuguese.
Hi Pat,
We are off to Pingo Doce to shop the organic section! Life is good!
Thank you for supporting our channel. As for the car the cost is very expensive and it is still not here 5 months later. Due to wars, shipping issues etc. So we do not have a final total as of yet. We will definitely let you know when we do.
Have a wonderful day,
Alan and Leslie
What would you miss the most?
Big Breakfasts
