  • Well, that ended differently than expected. We headed up to the Sierras, it wasn't supposed to snow...guess what? It snowed.

Glad y’all are safe. In all my decades of off road, for work and play, military, etc, just living outdoors. It’s the hard days, the ruff days, the SHTF days, that stories and memories are made of. You have really epic days and days like this. Nobody tells stories of average days to their grand kids

That ARB bull bar was a god send. Saved your lower front end. It kept your steering apparatus from being bent and thus stranded. A OEM bumper would have been kaput.

4:09 That makes good sense, I have been driving off road two footed as I mostly learned on rigs with an open diff and a little brake with the gas tends to help prevent wheel spin before there were electronics put in the rigs to have the brakes help with a flip of the switch.

It is great seeing Miguel get some real experience on the trail, it will definitely make him a more responsible driver when back to so called "civilization". Certainly teaches what is like to feel the vehicle respond to your inputs. Glad the accident did not cause big damage, it just got some more trail scars to go along with the stories of your adventures.

Watching this makes me miss my ‘93 80! And that trail has gotten much tougher over the years. I took my 80, totally stock with all-season tires, from the Lake Alpine end back in ‘95 or ‘96 with no problems. And we used to do the north half from the lake down to the first slick rock section and back many times.

Defiantly get the steering rack checked and maybe the frame horns that the bumper attaches to. Also check the mounting bolts for the bumper. Maybe replace the bumper mounting bolts. But it wasn't hard enough to set off the air bad g-force sensor so that's good.

NOAA zone area forecast. Everyone should learn how to use it, and also expect the worst from a forecast in a mountain range. As someone who has plowed snow on a mountain pass, weird thing like a Doppler radar being pointed/tilted at an off angle can make thing off and not catch certain elevations. Nothing like calling NOAA and asking when the snow will stop and they ask... "It"s, snowing, how much and for how long?". At least they fixed that radar. But differant valley and ridges within a mountain range can change things drastically.

Thank goodness your rack had that give engineered into it too. Makes me think and wonder what mine would do if ever in a wreck like that and I fear with a RTT and everything else I have up top awning, hi lift, recovery boards, etc, mine would rip from the mounting points. 😬. Makes me think having some sort of extremely secure sliding system built into the side rails is a really really good idea! 🤔

Great patience with Miguel, daddy-o. Kudos on the skill to get it unstuck after your off-trail excursion (crash means another party was involved) - seriously skillful driving. My understanding is that the TLC assembly plant was like no other. My guess is because of the military contracts would be Toyota's reasoning, but the design and build qualities of those era trucks feel handbuilt. The basic formula (wheelbase, weight distribution, etc.) has always been maintained and the trucks continue to drive incredibly off the grid. But that excursion extraction took some skill!

so many lessons to be learned on this one. alternative for gamin inreach not connecting. proof lockers and tires and bumpers before lights. bumper saved radiator from smashing into fan. no power no heat. say what you want about smoother ride and better gas mileage for alterains but i dont think you get out with them on. would the track boards have gotten you out faster? probably second guessing is where you learn. should have had chains? maybe. again learn from mistakes made, adapt from there. the before and after shots show a lot of why to be prepared. well done to miguel. get on it. up over and out of the trail. quality family time.
