    I always put diff fluid in after the installation of the sun gear then very slowly insert the spiders and cross shafts. This insures better fluid distribution especially with higher viscosity fluids. It also speeds up the flowing into and bubble waiting period. You can dab out excess fluid with q-tips if level is too high. I do my shocks in a similar manner.

  • @tjenkins1126
    @tjenkins1126 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This came out at the right time. Just got my Kyosho outlaw pro together and took it out for the first time. Diff is more slip than limited, so guessing I need to go with a heavier weight oil. I'm used to locked spools in my crawlers and just making sure they're well greased. Is there a reason things like the KORP and others have open diffs over being locked? More prone to breakage with high volt brushless set ups? Thanks for the content!🍻👍👊

    • @AMain_Hobbies
      @AMain_Hobbies  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A big reason is you just wouldn't be able to turn with locked diffs. Crawlers barely pull it off and must use extreme steering angles, a dig unit, or a front overdrive to overcome this. In sand or mud it is superior, but for anything with decent wheel speed, on a surface with decent traction, a vehicle with locked diffs would perform poorly. The diffs also help distribute power to areas with the lowest resistance, to keep wheel spin to a minimum. When your tires break loose and are spinning, you have lost traction and control of the vehicle. There is a lot to it, but I hope this shines a little light on the topic. Great question and congrats on the cool truck!

      Totally get it, guess I assumed everyone plays in the dirt, where a locker helps and you just slide the rear end around. Throttle stear, if you will. Never thought about high traction situations where the diff needs to the job it was literally designed to do. Appreciate the time and convo man, keep doing what you do.🍻👍👊

    Genuine question. Why wait for the air bubbles to come out of the diff fluid, if the manufacturer doesn't have reccomend completely filling (overfilling) the diff housing anyway? It seems to me that if we aren't filling it all the way, there's going to be air in the housing anyway that will mix with the fluid when the car is running

    I’m learning so much about my last unknown area of my truck, the entire damn drivetrain. I know, it’s incredibly important to take care of it, but I’ve never had any need or problems which required immediate attention. So I ask, if want to replace anything that may need to be while in there, my trucks an old 2.5 Revo, with several upgrades, but none to the drivetrain, yet. So any suggestions as to what could or even should be done while in there? I’d want to swap out the bearings as I’m just prone to always doing that. Any more than that I just don’t know. So any advice is welcome!!

    • @AMain_Hobbies
      @AMain_Hobbies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very happy you're exploring and learning about your truck! The r/c transmission are pretty simple but look intimidating. Usually for servicing, clean the inside the case, clean/replace bearings, freshen up the diff with new fluid, replace diff outdrives if they are worn, and maybe replace the idle gear too if it has any signs of wear. When you're re-assembling the transmission, add a little lightweight grease to one of the gears which will spread when all the gears are rotating, helping smoothen and quiet the transmission. This is what we use: www.amainhobbies.com/protek-rc-premier-white-friction-noise-reducing-gear-grease-lubricant-10ml-ptk-1412/p-qeaqtsqq6mzxactz

    Hi friend, I'm from Brazil and I have some questions. I would be very happy if you would help me! I have already discovered that it is necessary to apply grease to the outer gears of the differentials, but I really wanted to know if I should also grease the gears of the engine. Example: 6448 parts: Spur gear, 8985: Input gear transmission, both from Traxxas Maxx. Another question is that the center differential gear comes into contact with a motor gear, should I grease it too? Part 8988. Inside Driveshaft 8949, do I also need to apply grease?

    • @AMain_Hobbies
      @AMain_Hobbies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it is not necessary. The grease is good for metal on metal gears, but with a plastic spur gear it is not necessary, although adding grease will do no harm. The only concern is the grease will attract dust and dirt, so you may need to clean that area more often.

      Grease can be purchased in bulk for cheap and is a good substitute for silicone differential oil. Is it better? No. Is it cheaper? Yes. For bashing, does it matter? Probably not, unless you are tuning your diffs or trying to achieve a desired result. The most important thing is to keep something in that differential; letting it run dry is baaaaaaad.

      Sounds like your center differential fluid might have broken down, or is too light. Adding new fluid would help, maybe 10K is the stock weight. The heavier the fluid, the more all-the-time 4X4 it will be, but this generally reduces performance, but if you are just bashing around, it shouldn't matter. We have used 1Million weight center fluid before and it's some serious wheelie popping action, although it's really hard on the vehicle drivetrain. Maybe try 100K fluid if you are just bashing around. Check this out (and you can select different weights from the drop down above the blue add to cart button): www.amainhobbies.com/team-associated-silicone-differential-fluid-2oz-100000cst-asc5459/p453215?v=223792
      If you have a broken part in the drivetrain, in the rear end, this will cause all power to transfer to the front end. So be sure this isn't the case. Maybe pick up the car off the ground, and make sure all the tires spin with the same force, when you give it gas.
      Hope this helps.

    • @AMain_Hobbies
      @AMain_Hobbies  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The vehicle manual should state what fluid was used, or recommended for use. If the manual doesn't state what weight fluid was used, they may have used grease instead, which can be a suitable, inexpensive alternative. The viscosity of grease though is not easily adjustable like silicone fluid, and naturally, grease has a lightweight viscosity. For 2S/3S power needs, this may be ok, but for high-powered 6S power needs, the viscosity may not be adequate. So, it just depends...

      There's no harm in filling the diff cup to the line in the manual. If too much fluid is added, pressure will cause some to seep out; if not enough fluid is added, the fluid will break down slightly faster. Neither way should cause the diff to blow out though, so you should be ok.
