    Dumb comparison lol You have brilliant darker hhx cymbals by Sabian, including a bright pair of aax hi hats. Up against natural lathed dark Zildjians lol... Not even remotely close to being a accurate recording comparison. One is essentially a rock/ volume set up and the other is “all around”.

    @TheSentinel909 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    The cymbal sets you are comparing are meant for completely different purposes - the Sabians are supposed to be loud and penetrating, as they are often used for rock/metal (and the stage like you mentioned).

      absolutely correct. Better would be comparing the AAX with the A Custom series and even that does not 100% fit. Better the AA vs A Custom.

    Apples to hamburgers comparison. You're comparing Zildjian low volume jazz cymbals to Sabian loud ROCK cymbals.

    I like the darker Zildjians. I'm a former mellophone player from a drum corps and we were taught to put our sound into the tuba's sound. The darker your sound the bigger you sound and the better you are able to fill the space.

    IMO K customs and K Custom Hybrids are the perfect cymbals. I’ve had A’s and a few other types of brands but the hybrids were so good sounding. The hi hats, chinas and splashes were like having studio sound no matter where I was.

    Hey Robert. Congrats on the subscribers!
    Yeah, I do like my dark K hihats, but sometimes
    they just sound too intense, too complex,
    not washy enough. Any micing ideas?!

    • @LearnAudioEngineering
      @LearnAudioEngineering  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hmmmm, most of the time I won't use a HH mic because I just end up muting it cuz it's just too much.
      I might increase the angle of the bottom cymbal to get more slosh/wash between the two. As for mics, Ive seen dynamics like SM7B or MD441 used on hats that are too crisp, or intense. might give them a softer, out of focus sound.
      Thanks for the comment, Sean!!

    Hmmm, as far as i could hear, you need way more power on the z's to cut in the mix, no? They're pretty soft and mellow. The S's seem to be more present and cutting, which i would suggest, would be just a logical choice. Even for acoustic live jazz, just put a few sizzles in the ride, and it'll project enought, without diggin to much coal . . .

    OKAY OKAY OKAY..... Most of the time pre packaged sets are usually a cash grab, so NEXT time you might wanna try some Sabian HHX thins, or even HH ones because these would be a better comparison, to the Zildjian's, especially because you just compared cymbals with a brilliant finish, versus cymbals that are simply lathed with small hammer marks. Congratulations on the subscribers and it all depends on what your recording!

    • @FanaticDrummer
      @FanaticDrummer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea the cymbal models arent even close to being in the same categories or series lol. Pointless. You would have to compare HH to K’s. Because HHX use larger hammering hammers so the darker tones are trashier, where the HH are smaller hammering like that of the K’s...

    I really appreciate your video, but I think these are not cymbals to be compared to start with. Maybe you coul have chosen more similar cymbals between both brands like, for example Ks against Legacy or Artisan..smth like that...

  • @FunkyDPL
    @FunkyDPL 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is not an exact comparison. You are comparing an all-K setup with a mixed bag of Sabians. An all-HHX Sabian setup would be a better one. Obviously since both brands are used in all kinds of recordings, one is not "better" than another, just different. I'm a Sabian player because their sound is a little more focused than their Zildjian counterparts, but I have heard some great-sounding all-Zildjain setups over the years. I've never been a Paiste fan, even though they certainly have a LOT of fans out there. As long as it is a quality cymbal, use what sounds best to you.

  • @petergiordano9608
    @petergiordano9608 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are comparing apples and oranges, first of all there are no Zildjian cymbals that a truly hand hammered and finished with the same craftsmanship as a Sabian. If you want a true comparison, try the HH or HHX Complex cymbals. You are comparing the K Zildjian with AAX and even HHX but X-plosion weights which are by no means representative of the Sabian line up. The AAX cymbals would be compared to the A Custom line from Z company. Although the Sabian cymbal choices are heavier they sound so much fuller, rounder and the crashes match as do the hats and the ride. You will never get the same subtleness of the K Ride with the AAX Stage ride. I have well over 100 Sabian cymbals today and have had more cymbals than I care to mention. My go to studio and recording set is HH regular hats or HHX groove hats with HH medium Thin and Thin weight crashed and HH Manhattan ride or HH Sound control ride.
    Please take no offense to this, but you need to know what you are comparing before you start and make statements that are not really fair to the manufacturers. Any way that is my 2 cents take it for what you will... Thanks!

    I hate pre-packaged sets, I prefer to individually buy my rides/crashes/hats. I have never been able to find a single cymbal line that has my favorite ride, hi-hats, and crashes. I feel like Sabian and Zildjian offer a ton of different cymbal lines so just comparing one set won’t give you the complete picture.

    I actually like the Sabians better for the exact reasons you listed. I like my cymbals to cut through and not blend as much as Zildjians do. If you're going for the super nuanced "audiophile" stuff, yeah of course you'll like the Zildjians better, but I really like the modern, brighter, hi-fi sound.

      Thanks bro! You just described these just how I needed them to be. I'm coming from Sabian Evolution 14 hats, 14 & 17HHX Xtreme crash, Aax 16 & 18 studio crash, 18 & 20 HHX ozone & HHX 21 groove ride. I'm looking for set already package like a Zildjian A (not custom... too bright)or K set... But I want it in a Sabian set. Can't choose between HHX complex or Legacy... Maybe Artisan? I'm playing mostly RnB 70s to now, Gospel, Neo-Soul and some Rap.

    Don't think any Zildjians are finished by hand anymore. They appear to have a machine simulated hand hammering process now which is a bit anomalous to me. Cymbals are either hand hammered or they're not hand hammered. Having said this, I have had information suggesting that Ks were never hand hammered after around the early to mid 1980s. The original ones would have been and EAKs I think may have been. I have a load of mid to late 80s Ks and they sound totally different and much much better than anything Zildjian have made for the last 20 years. That's not nostalgia talking, I took mine into a local drum store and compared them, even the staff couldn't believe the difference and they all agreed my 80s ones were far better sounding than anything in their stock. I actually bought a current series K 17" Medium Thin and got rid of it within 2 months, it was terrible in comparison to my others.

      All the early K cymbals were made in the Canadian Zildjian factory that eventually became Sabian. I don’t think Amy hand hammering was ever done at Zildjian in the US. They might have made prototypes by hand but the hammer patterns were made by a neumatic hammer operated by a human. Somewhere in the mid 90’s Armand decided to go with the CNC auto hammers for the K and K Custom. That info comes straight from Paul Francis. At that point a human only needs to load the cymbals into the machine. I believe the higher end Constantinoples are still made on an auto hammer operated by a person where the hammer force and area of the hammer strike is controlled by a person. A and A Custom use a rotary hammer which is more like a pizza cutter to make the uniform or centric circle of dimple marks. Regular K and K Custom and any outliers from the Z family are hammered on a CNC auto hammer.
