    Traveled from Vegas to Michigan and then Michigan to San Diego in my I3 REX. No problems at all, and charged almost exclusively at Walmarts. Had no worries, plus regenerative breaking helped me gain 28+ miles to battery in both my passes through Colorodo.

    Nice video. I love road trips, particularly in the US. Electrify America seems to be the way to go for the USA. Long journeys are really great in this car. I have one in the UK and quite often do 300 mile trips. The REX takes all the stress out of long journeys, because you're never going to have to be recovered due to a flat battery.

    First stop at 106 miles cost $7.44. Works out to 7 cents a mile driving cost. Equate that to a gas powered car at $4/gal would equal 57 mpg? Time spent waiting for a charge with 6 stops could be a drag though.

    • @xtremetoonz
      @xtremetoonz  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends if you’re on a mission or a journey. We like a journey and enjoyed the stops. Maybe not all the time but now that we have our i3 coded, we can choose to use the REx to get us further and charge less. Granted, that means we’re burning fossil fuels and we prefer electric only, but we have the option and 95% of time we’re driving around town and EV only.

    I just got a used 2018 i3 and the dealer said it cannot be charged with a level 3. Are there some that can be?

    • @xtremetoonz
      @xtremetoonz  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think your dealer person knows much about BMW i3s.
      Level 1, plugs into a normal 110v Jack. This will take over night and make a day to charge the car fully. Very slow. You should have one of these chargers with the car. If you don’t, let me know and I have ours still I can sell you.
      Level 2, uses the same plug size as Level 1 but will take 5-6 hours to charge the car.
      Level 3 uses a larger plug type that the i3 accommodates so do course you can use level 3 and will take 30-45m to charge at a max of around 45kW. This is what we used in all of our charging on this trip.

      Unfortunately (scan through the other comments for more info) we were in an accident with our i3 on Nov 2, 2022, so we don't have much history to report on in regards to reliability. Our experience during ownership was fantastic and we've actually light heartedly discussed getting another one. We didn't replace the i3 with another i3 at the time because they were fairly hard to come by (the particular model we wanted) and we ended up going the Tesla route. No regrets there, but we do miss our i3 and highly recommend it to others.

    • @xtremetoonz
      @xtremetoonz  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely agree on the efficiency and safety. I wanted to use the car's adaptive cruise control as it would be better at avoiding a fast break situation 100% of the time vs my ability to hopefully react fast enough, though the adaptive is smart enough to not get too close. I had it dialed in as close as it would go. I did still realize some additional miles when I was able to draft for good portion of the leg.

      lol...2000 hours??..what???Its a regular scooter motor...im sure they can easily get 50000 kms as long as oil changes were regular. MYTH that its supposed to be only used as emergency, otherwise BMW would not have enabled rex on anytime below 75%.

    Thinking of getting an i3 Rex. What year should I avoid?

      I wouldn’t be the best person to ask that. I’d suggest joining one of the Facebook groups, maybe one of the Bimmer Code i3 groups as those members will tend to be more technical and analytical. My only beef with our model is that I can’t get CarPlay without a hardware upgrade.

      Avoid it totally. The Rex is too loud and annoying. The ride is horrible in the snow and on windy days. You’ll want a Tesla every time you see one.
