Real democracy is being locket into the same consensus as the big banks, the ngos, the media, the entirety of the academie, and washington.
I had to pause the video when I heard that
It's always good to remember that many authoritarians, even dictators like Hitler, came to power legally through the democratic functions of an election. And, of course after that, the die is far too often irrevocably cast as "Fearless Leader" tightens the noose on dissent.
The captions reported "is real" as "Israel". Had to step back and reflect on that on.
Sadly, Hitler was never elected to power. His allies in the government appointed him Chancellor, and then they changed certain laws to give him more and more power.
The Nazi Party was a minority party in the government, but harassment and violence towards other parties rendered them impotent. Some opposition parties were outlawed.
But that could never happen here.... 🙄
I'm not sure how Jon Stewart was able to keep a straight face while saying "This would never happen in United States"
He is still a professional comedian/humorist. He can still deliver a punch line with the best of them!
Jon Stewart just helped Condoleeza Rice and Hillary Clinton launder their images on his show. Imagine bending the knee to those evil liars? Jon is a shameless grifter pushing establishment talking points on dumb people. Sadly, because they are so simple minded and dumb, they immediately believe him. I feel like that's true here too for those born in the' 70s.
I was born in Hungary in 1986 and remember the ecstasy my parents felt after the communist regime ended in 1989. When they could vote on the first election which actually had competing parties, and were not pressured by their employers on who to vote for. When their skills and attitude provided them chances instead of whom they knew or who their dads were. I remember the elderly ladies in the village helping each other to the voting booth when we've joined NATO saying "we aren't really going to see it but it will make a difference for the grandchildren". I remember walking barefoot with my dad on the Chain Bridge in Budapest, made into a grassy trail for the weekend because we were celebrating joining the EU in 2004.
And I remember leaving my job in a government office in 2016 because I've had enough of the old colleague putting the propaganda newspaper on my desk every goddamn morning and the general atmosphere of always having to choose what am I saying and to whom. The last straw was our director calling us on our private cell phones on the weekend to imitate a friendly chat (not that we have ever been friends), then switch to "you are going to vote on Sunday, aren't you? You know how important this vote is for the government plans, right?"
As an accountant I also saw SME clients not getting contracts because "someone better situated" won them who then made a shit paint job for 4x price but was the godfather of the mayor's kid. And as so many referenced above, I saw the damn posters EVERYWHERE spewing hate. The state-controlled TV paints Zelenskyy as a raging alcoholic who is to blame for the whole damn war and anyway it's the West's fault this hasn't ended yet because they keep sending Ukraine guns. From an outside perspective it's unfathomable.
The point of this novel is that I fully agree how chilling her remark was, and coming from the same generation of Hungarians I feel she's absolutely right. I admire her tenacity - I've closed the door behind me and left this winter, like many others in my age.
She's so good a delivering such a concise message about the state of things in Hungary. Glad Jon & Co. had her on to connect some dots.
and she's doing it in her third or fourth language. I'm not that concise in my first.

They do get plenty of opportunities in the international media (in Europe). The problem is the Hungarian state media and Hungarian language media is strictly controlled. The young English speakers in Budapest are all anti-Orban. But when you go out in the villages it gets downright ugly.

Yes, your leadership is making you look bad. It’s an open secret that India is selling sanctioned goods to Russia, allowing them to kill more Ukrainian babies.
We don’t even see many comments like yours, with even a subtle acknowledgment of a problem in India, and we certainly don’t see anyone with a platform speaking out about the direction you are heading.
Between that and the scammers in call centers being allowed to continue as long as they pay the right bribes, India doesn’t have a chance at being considered really respectable. Just convenient.
Cheap labor is the only reason businesses are going there, and already we are hearing stories about corruption being factored into the cost of doing business, and the price of goods is adjusted to accommodate bribery costs.
I really hope we can turn ourselves around before we get that far. It seems impossible that we could ever get there, but I imagine you and Hungary felt the same at one point.

Amazing interview, as always! Ms. Cseh is incredibly bright and has her heart in the right place. Indeed, it is going to be a long rough road for Hungary to come back from this, but as far as there are people like her, there is some hope! My country, Slovakia, is at the brink of the same crossroad and I can only hope we will not follow the Orban path.

Katalin is a brilliant woman! I'm glad you took the time to showcase this on your show. I'm happy to see you back doing things you did best. I was a kid in NY growing up when I first started watching you. You shaped millions upon millions of lives around the world to listen to facts and reason, over rhetoric. I'm truly grateful and honored to have had that experience. As a brother of a FDNY Firefighter and 4th generation fireman; I'm humbled and incredibly thankful for the work you did for the first responders on 9/11.
America legalized weed to fight the Nazis during World War II, then lied to the American people about it to this day to wage the war on drugs.
Jon Stewart could do a hell of a lot more for first responders, soldiers and the world if he would just look into a camera and say the words, *"Hemp for Victory."* But he won't. The film has been public since 1990, over 30 years now. There was even a bill in Congress titled HR 3652, the *Hemp for Victory Act of 2019.* Not a peep on national news about it, even from Tulsi Gabbard who introduced the bill and hosts a show on FOX.
Yes, never seen her before, the people of Hungary are incredibly lucky to have someone as smart and with such conviction fighting their cause! Really hope it works out for them...dark times!!

If you really were being quiet you'd hear the silence of no Fox viewers seeing this at all. It's all bubbles. Fox has their bubble. MSNBC/CNN has their bubble. The vast majority of the viewers in each bubble stick to their bubble so they don't have to deal with dissenting opinions.
I do find it curious that the tagline for the piece is comparing Fox to state media when they're the only mainstream cable news outlet running opposition to the current state. Now if you were to call it a propaganda outlet you'd be a lot closer to the mark, not just for Fox but for all cable news outlets. All of them are captured at this point, which is why we need independents like Stewart. It's further interesting that Fox news opinion hosts pushing the stolen election narrative is so much worse than every other mainstream news outlet pushing Russiagate. Both of them are fabrications pushed out to the propaganda wing of their respective parties. Ask yourself if you're being honest when you consider one a threat to democracy and the other a nothingburger.

American living in Budapest this year. Wish I could post photos here of some of Orban's propaganda posters - I've taken photos as sober reminders. They make outrageous claims ("97%" support this or that) and when they are printed, they appear everywhere. Full support for Ms. Cseh.
Yeah, the parallels with Iowa -- a state government that gets more extreme-right by the year as more and more young people leave for other more liberal states nearby -- are very obvious to me. (Iowa's largest county by area, Kossuth, is named after someone you must know about by now)

@ Yeah it always shocks me whenever I am in Budapest - which is 4 times a year since july 2021. Why? Fav anime convention is there. And I made a ton of friends.
Which is also why it's such a contrast to me, because on one hand I hear my friends tell me what Orbán does (he is universally hated by 99% of the con people, obviously) and see those posters everywhere and read about the laws, etc, and on the other hand the con itself is basically a pride event with cosplay, every second stall has yaoi merch almost, and it's the most lovely friendly partylike open non-judgemental con anywhere on the continent - why I keep coming back.
In other words, even for me as a visitor it's blindingly obvious there's two worlds there. I just really hope my friends (who are all currently still very happy) can keep living their lives without too much trouble. They're all super nice people and don´t deserve it just for being bi and whatever...
But yes. If someone doesn´t believe it - EVERYWHERE it's insane. Even on the damn bus stops. Like, imagine the amount of propaganda you´d imagine in China...

There's a government video from 1942 called *Hemp for Victory* on an official US government website that shows Americans how to grow Cannabis Sativa to defend our country during World War II. Through all of the talk about legalizing weed, defunding the police and making America great again, Jon Stewart and every other assclown in national or social media refuses to do a single report about this and explain the sweeping systemic reform that will come when that film goes viral and becomes US Federal law again. So, all of American media lie to the American people, Jon Stewart included, and no one cares. Both sides just want to be told what they want to hear.
This should really be seen by more people and shared with family and friends. This is the alarm bell we need in this country!

A Hungarian who once lived in the US and then came to live in Europe ; went with my French friend to visit her family in Hungry. I went there twice before so decided not to join them.
Both returned after a week and said it was openly prejudiced and racist to all its minorities, starting to not resemble a Democracy.
My French friend added that it bore resemblance to watching old Nazis German fascist footage.
That was was 7 years ago so must be horrific now....
